USF loses a 24-17 heartbreaker to Alabama as Woodard's touchdown attempt intercepted
In his three seasons as a head coach both at Alabama and UCF, Jonathan Henry has accomplished a lot in his coaching career, including leading Alabama to two consecutive CFP appearances, winning it last season. The one thing Henry had never done was beat USF.
On Saturday, Patrick Wiggins' interception near the end zone sealed the accomplish for Henry and the Crimson Tide who ended their losing streak to the Bulls, beating them 24-17 to get back on track following their loss to Virginia Tech last week.
The Tide dominated most of the game, limiting USF's offense to just 350 yards of total offense with a good chunk coming in the fourth quarter where junior quarterback Rashad Woodard was able to lead two productive drives, the first ending with his four yard touchdown run with 3:29 to make it a seven point game.
Alabama running back Scott Allen picked up the first down on third down on the ensuing drive to burn two of USF's timeouts but Brandon Hoffman would be sacked on third and five with a little over a minute left to give USF the ball back and a chance to win it.
Woodard completed an eighteen yard pass to freshman Ryan Murray to make it 4th and inches after surrendering a sack on the first play of the drive. USF would pick up the first down on the next play on a handoff to Justin Thomas and would convert their next third down attempt with a completion to Scott Price but with no timeouts, time became their enemy as well with Murray being tackled on the next play in bounds with 19 seconds remaining.
USF would snap the ball with nine seconds remaining, leading to Woodard throwing a jump ball to Andre Morgan that would be intercepted by Wiggins for his second of the game.

The Bullpen: Alabama's defensive line whooped USF's offensive line for an entire game

USF offensive line coach Ryan Williams doesn't mind mincing words and after his comments during Saturday's post game presser that Alabama's defensive line completely dominated USF's offensive line, Williams didn't offer any dilution in his press availability on Wednesday.
"They took our lunch," Williams reiterated after having the chance to re-watch the game, "We had some moments but overall, they were more physical and we had bad eyes, didn't finish blocks, didn't make them a lot of times."
Williams refrained from calling out any specific players but right guard Sam Jefferson had one of his worst games as a Bull, especially in the running game which is normally one of his strengths. The team moved him from right tackle inside to guard in hopes of leveraging his athleticism and physicality but on at least two plays where Jefferson was a pulling guard, he didn't block anyone as Dave Parker was being tackled in the backfield.
Through two games, USF has played the same five offensive line of (left to right): Steve Bailey, Nick Ryan, Kyle Jones, Jefferson and true freshman Kevin Brown.
Ryan also had a tough game, surrendering a sack and a pressure in crucial moments. Bailey's probably been the cleanest of them all but none have been impressive and with Stanford coming into town this week, we could see another unit out there.
‣ Linebacker Oliver Colvin to miss Stanford game with arm injury
USF true freshman outside linebacker Oliver Colvin will be out for at least the Stanford game according to defensive coordinator Trai Martinez as the freshman suffered an arm injury in the Alabama game.
Martinez added that he expects Colvin back at practice in the coming days but that he'll be a limited participant for at least another week and could potentially miss more games. Colvin failed to record a stat against Alabama before leaving the game.
A top candidate to replace Colvin will be redshirt junior Richard Smith who had a tackle against Alabama. Redshirt senior Erik Wheeler also saw some action on Saturday when Colvin left the game.
‣ Where is Brandon and Marcellus Smith?
A lot of the focus was on the offense this week and rightfully so with the defense playing well enough to win the game. But where has Brandon and Marcellus Smith been, two of USF's best players?
Through two games, Marcellus has three tackles and two tackles for loss but no quarterback sacks, pressures or hits while Brandon Smith has just two tackles. They both returned for their senior season to not only have another shot at the national championship but solidified themselves as first round picks and through two games, it's been a major dissapointment, especially against Alabama when USF could have used some big plays from their front line to help create more turnovers.

A day-one starter, Smith surrendered zero sacks as a true freshman and paved the way for a very good running attack in 2020 along with fellow guard Brian Brown. With Brown graduated, Smith emerged as the team's top OL in 2021, earning all-conference honors while surrendering just one sack that season and helping the Bulls have once again two 1,000-yard rushers on their way to a national championship.
With much of the offense depleted in 2022, USF had to rely almost exclusively on its running game with Troy Henry rushing for a school record 2,125 yards and won the Heisman, thanking his offensive line during his acceptance speech. Smith was the leader of that offensive line and arguably the team's best offensive linemen of all time.

Coming in as an undersized offensive lineman, George was the sixth member of an offensive line that paved the way for Roger Shaw Jr's first Heisman campaign where George recorded six pancakes as an extra lineman to help USF win a national championship. The next season, he transitioned to starting center and once again helped Shaw Jr. win his second Heisman as he rushed for 2,051 yards and Anthony Montgomery also rushed for 725 yards.
As a junior, George once again moved along the offensive line, this time to guard in an effort to replace two high level seniors that had graduated in Lamar Felder and Ben Brown. George had one of his best seasons, allowing just three sacks on nearly 800 drop backs from an USF offense that saw a true freshman in Jeff Jones throw for nearly 6,000 yards breaking all types of records.
George would finally earn All-SEC honors as a senior before wrapping up his USF career as one of their more dominant and versatile offensive linemen with a national championship win over Texas.

After being under Shelton Richardson's wing as a true freshman, the defense became Stewart's in 2020 and Manny Diaz was the perfect, aggressive defensive coordinator for Stewart to continue his tutelage.
Stewart mastered being a blitzing linebacker under Diaz, recording nine sacks his sophomore season along with 22 tackles for loss and taking home the Nagurski. He was a more traditional linebacker under Brent Venables but he had a career year in terms of tackles with 117 and showed his ability to be a sideline to sideline space eater and one of the better linebackers in Big XII history.

Maybe surprisingly one of the program's most accomplished players, Thompson's long list of accolades speak for themselves. If that wasn't impressive enough, he did it while playing for three different coordinators that all played a different defense.
No matter the scheme, Thompson was not only the team's ever so reliable safety, he also made plays on the other side of the football. His 50 tackles for losses in three seasons is an absurd clip for a safety as that's good enough for elite front seven players. He finished second on the team in tackles all three seasons he was there and won the Thorpe Award as a true freshman.
Thompson has done a lot of sliding up and down in the drafting of this list as a case can be made that he was a top fifteen player. While all of those ahead of him might not have as many accolades, they do have comparable counting numbers and more memorable plays. Thompson being left outside of the top fifteen isn't an indictment of his skills but just how strong the top of this list is.

In all honesty, Fowler was originally one of the honorable mentions in the first drafting of the list but after typing up his accolades to list him among the honorable mentions, it was clear that he should be higher and as the drafts continued, Fowler kept climbing higher and higher before settling here.
He was a co-starter at nickel as a true freshman, recording two interceptions and 31 tackles as he showed both the willingness and the ability to tackle despite his small frame which would be his calling card for years to come.
He was the outright starter at nickel as a sophomore, recording an impressive 15 tackles for loss along with six interceptions, four of which he returned for a touchdown on his way to winning the Nagurski Award along with being an All-American selection.
Fowler would go on to win the Thorpe Award as a junior, helping the Bulls win their inaugural Champions Division Trophy. He has a solid claim at not only being USF's premier nickel corner of all time but one of college football's.
Oh man. Alabama ate you up. Woodard probably needed a good ice bath after that game.
yeah, he left twice with injuries but came right back. I'm definitely worried about the running game outside of Woodard against tougher competition that we're going to see in the Champions Division

Chris Price makes first extended debut in comeback win over No. 1 Stanford
At 63 years old, USF head coach Malcolm Francois Sr's leap off the ground when referees confirmed that Shawn Franklin's strip of Stanford quarterback Andrew Jones would stand would rival that of Francois' vertical leap nearly four decades ago at his pro day.
Francois Sr. was also among the first in the end zone to celebrate Scott Price's game clinching touchdown on fourth down to beat the Stanford Cardinal 28-17 on Saturday in one of USF's most improbable victories in recent years.
"They're all great," Francois Sr. said of his 349 wins as USF's head coach, "But the ones like tonight, you remember them forever."
USF was down to it's backup quarterback in Chris Price after junior Rashad Woodard left the game with a concussion in the first half. The Bulls offense was already struggling against the Cardinal defense but Price was able to lead two touchdown drives in the second and third quarter to give USF the 21-10 lead with 2:18 remaining.
Stanford would eventually get points back on the board, scoring right up the middle of USF's defense on a handoff to Corey Jones that went seventeen yards to shrink the lead to four points. USF's defense was holding on for dear life, forcing punt after punt and even forced a turnover on the aforementioned Jones' fumble but drive after drive, USF's offense couldn't put the Cardinal away.
It's what made Francois Sr's decision to go for it on 4th and 8 with 2:23 all the more surprising, even with the ball in plus territory. On the previous play, Price had scrambled for five yards, enough to get USF co-offensive coordinators Jeremy Butler and Malcolm Francois Jr. to convince Francois Sr. to keep the offense on the field.
"When you have guys that you respect in [Butler and Francois Jr.], you listen to them. It makes the job easier," Francois Sr. said after the game of the decision.
It didn't look all that promising as Price launched the ball down the field near three Stanford defenders but receiver Scott Price -- no relation -- was able to get under it and sprint into the end zone.

'The Next Jed White'; Bulls land South Florida's top arm talent since Jed White in Chaminade Madonna's Kevin Meadows

After being all Alabama for the past eighteen months, Chaminade-Madonna prep quarterback Kevin Meadows shocked the college football world by committing to the USF Bulls during his official visit this past weekend.
Meadows took unofficial visits to Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma and Michigan during the summer and even attended spring practices at Alabama and Texas, never once stopping by USF's campus since his sophomore season. The Bulls kept at it with his recruitment and it finally paid off with a last minute official visit being planned that ended with Meadows committing to USF.
"It was kind of crazy," Meadows told On3 after his announcement, "I was coming home from practice less than a week ago, got on the phone with [Jeremy Butler] and everything just came together and I got home and asked my parents and they were with it. As soon as we landed at the airport, I had a feeling and once we got on campus, it was game over. My dad looked at me on Friday night after we were wrapping up the family dinner and he knew it was over, we all did."
Meadows credits having been away for so long from USF's campus as one of the reasons why the official visit was so effective as everything felt brand new for him. Even with the 'shotgun wedding' feel to it, Meadows was adamant that his commitment to USF was solid and that he won't be taken any more official visits.
"I've already been recruiting the guys around me," added Meadows, who took his official visit alongside four-star guard Tim Williams, four-star defensive back Michael Williams, four-star tight end Matt Jordan and four-star tight end Kevin Harris.
Meadows has often been compared to former USF quarterback Jed White, especially after Meadows transformed his body last season and put on 'twenty to thirty' pounds according to his head coach Eric Hines. 247 Sports has Meadows listed at 244 pounds, which is where he says he played most of last season at without losing his explosiveness, five pounds heavier than White coming out of high school and only an inch short at six-foot-five.
The testing numbers actually favor Meadows who ran both the 100-meters and the 200-meters for Chaminade-Madonna as a sophomore. As a passer, there's certainly room for improvement from an accuracy standpoint with Meadows who can be up and down at times. The prep school in Hollywood, Florida does not allow December graduations, meaning Meadows likely won't be an early enrollee although the top ranked quarterback prospect since he isn't ruling it out yet.
Meadows is the fifth top ranked quarterback that USF has landed, joining Mike McFarland, Joey Spence, Charlie Cooke and Mark Cunningham with all of them, except for Cooke, winning a national championship at USF with Cooke going on to win the Heisman at UCF.
