// Seattle comeback falls short as Cowboys win in overtime
ARLINGTON, Tex. - Thanks to an MVP-like performance from Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys avoided losing to the Seattle Seahawks after surrendering a 15-point lead in the 4th quarter to capture their 10th win of the season.

Prescott was a mastermind against the Seahawks secondary, and the Cowboys offensive line was able to pick up Seattle's pass rush time after time to allow their star quarterback to throw for 382 yards and 4 touchdowns while completing 78 percent of his passes. His final throw - a 19-yard pass to leading receiver Michael Gallup - helped the Cowboys end the game with an overtime touchdown. Prescott completed passes to 9 different Cowboys against Seattle, and surprisingly the receiver who produced the least was CeeDee Lamb, who was limited to 1 catch for 11 yards. Prescott's other touchdowns came on a 25-yard pass to KaVontae Turpin, a 13-yard pass to Brandin Cooks, and a 59-yard pass to Jalen Tolbert.

While the Seahawks managed to dissect the NFL's number 5 defense for 446 yards of offense while keeping Geno Smith away from the arms of DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons, it was the defense that was unable to stop Prescott and the Cowboys offense when it matter most. In addition to Prescott's output, backup running back Ronald Jones II added 94 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns to outpace and outperform Tony Pollard. For Seattle, Smith threw for 287 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kenneth Walker III was welcomed in his return to the field with 2 rushing touchdowns on 18 carries. D.K. Metcalf led all receivers with 8 catches and 103 yards.

The Seahawks comeback started with less than 4 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter when Walker's 2nd rushing touchdown cut the Cowboys' lead to 8. After a defensive stop, Smith engineered a drive that ended with a touchdown pass to fullback Nick Bellore with just 6 seconds remaining. A 2-point conversion on a completed fade route to Metcalf in one-on-one coverage against DaRon Bland tied the game at 35. Seattle would not touch the ball after that touchdown as they went on to lose the coin toss in overtime, putting an end to their comeback bid.

It was certainly a different challenge for the Seahawks, who haven't played a team with at least a .500 record since the Baltimore Ravens back in Week 9. The loss to Dallas shows how much further the team has to go as far as defense is concerned, said head coach Pete Carroll in the post-game conference.

"It would be easy for me to stand here and say that I'm proud of the fight our team had, but to be honest we are not where we want to be. There's a lot more we want to accomplish defensively, so for us it's a matter of reviewing the game film and working to fix our mistakes."

The Seahawks travel to Santa Clara for a rematch with the San Francisco 49ers next week after defeating them by 2 points on Thanksgiving just last week.

RENTON, Wash. - Despite the Seattle Seahawks having one of the best records in the NFC (9-3), head coach Pete Carroll and his team are well aware that they are not out of the woods yet. With 5 games remaining, the Seahawks still face the risk of losing the NFC West and perhaps a spot in the playoffs if they are unable to close the season strong.

It will be tough, as the Seahawks are set to face 3 teams currently with winning records - the Eagles, Titans, and Steelers - while the remaining 2 games come against NFC West rivals - the 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, who upset the Seahawks earlier this season. When asked if their "soft" schedule has contributed to their record this season, Carroll shook off the implication that Seattle hasn't played any real competition.

"I don't know where you guys have been, but last time I checked we beat both the Bengals and Ravens on the road, beat Carolina, and have one of the best offensive units in the league."

To be fair, the Seahawks have also played the Los Angeles Rams (3-9) twice, Detroit Lions (2-10), Cleveland Browns (3-9), and Washington Commanders (1-11), among others. Safety Jamal Adams says what matters now is how the team responds to their 35-41 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

"It all starts with getting back into the win column and we have a chance to do that against the Niners this week," he said. The Seahawks defeated San Francisco by 2 points in their most recent matchup, and the stakes are somewhat higher this time around. San Francisco (6-6) is not only fighting to stay alive in the division title race, but also the playoff race. For Seattle, a win lifts them closer to their first NFC West title since 2020, while a loss could raise further questions about whether they are playoff contenders or pretenders - although the Seahawks statistically have the best offense in the NFL, they rank near the bottom of the league defensively.

• San Francisco's extra motivation vs. Seattle
  This game means a little bit more to San Francisco than Seattle - not only is it an opportunity to stay alive in the playoff hunt and the NFC West title race, but it is also an opportunity for revenge. The 49ers lost to the Seahawks just 2 weeks ago by 2 points, playing most of the game without superstar running back Christian McCaffrey. He will be available this week. They will, however, be without offensive tackle Trent Williams as he nurses a foot injury.

• The Seahawks' response to their defeat last week
  Last week was the first time since Week 7 that the Seahawks have seen their loss column change after failing to complete a comeback win against the Cowboys, and it was once again their defense that was placed in the spotlight for another lackluster performance. How will the Seahawks respond? Seattle's defense was able to hold the 49ers to 14 points last time, albeit that was with McCaffrey missing most of the game. They will have him back this Sunday, but the Seahawks will also have Bobby Wagner in the lineup as well. The defensive captain and leader did not play in Seattle and San Francisco's previous meeting.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A Seattle Seahawks defense that was playing so well through 3 quarters unraveled in the 4th quarter and overtime to lose to the San Francisco 49ers, dropping their second straight game.

It marks another tough overtime loss for the Seahawks, who managed to sack Brock Purdy 6 times but allowed him to throw for 254 yards on 17 completions. Brandon Aiyuk accounted for nearly half of the 49ers total offense, establishing a new career-high 150 yards in one game on 7 catches along with a touchdown. 75 of those yards came on one play in the 4th quarter as Seahawks safety Quandre Diggs was caught out of position on a zone coverage look, leaving the middle of the field wide open for Purdy to find the 49ers receiver.

It seemed as if all momentum had shifted to the Niners at that moment. If it didn't, then it sure did when kicker Jake Moody drilled a 54-yard field goal at the end of regulation to tie the game at 17, and a big 3rd and 2 stop against Kenneth Walker III in overtime gave the 49ers the ball and ultimately the victory thanks to Elijah Mitchell's 33-yard run.

Mitchell, who has primarily been used in the red zone this season, out-gained starter Christian McCaffrey with 112 rushing yards on 13 carries against Seattle's top 5 rushing defense. More than half of his yards came after contact (64). He also added 5 catches for 51 yards. McCaffrey finished with 57 yards on 14 carries.

Geno Smith threw his 5th interception of the season and his first in Seattle's last 5 games in the red zone in the 2nd quarter to linebacker Fred Warner, who was tied for the league lead in interceptions coming into the contest. San Francisco's defense stepped up big against the NFL's leading passer, holding him to his lowest offensive output of the season with just 187 passing yards and 1 touchdown that came in the 3rd quarter. He was also sacked 3 times, all by second-year edge rusher Drake Jackson. Receiver D.K. Metcalf managed to record just 3 catches for 21 yards against Charvarius Ward. The Seahawks' best options against the Niners came on the ground with their talented duo of Walker and Zach Charbonnet. They combined for 190 yards.

The Seahawks could not capitalize on Jason Myers' best performance of the season - the struggling kicker converted on all 4 of his field goal attempts during the game, but it was the 49ers that got the win. The loss to San Francisco drops the Seahawks to 9-4 and shrinks their lead in the NFC West to 2 games, and with their next 3 matchups coming against teams with playoff aspirations, the road only seemingly gets tougher as the regular season nears its end.

Seattle hosts the Philadelphia Eagles next week.

SEATTLE, Wash. - Following the Seahawks' 20-26 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, there were reports of top receiver D.K. Metcalf and top cornerback Tariq Woolen getting into a heated argument in the locker room. The two reportedly needed to be separated by their teammates, including veterans/captains Tyler Lockett and Bobby Wagner.

The confrontation could be seen as an expression of frustration as a result of the defeat in which Seattle failed to secure a bounce-back victory following a loss to the Cowboys last week. It is the Seahawks' second consecutive overtime loss, dropping them to 1-2 in overtime games this season. Metcalf was limited to 3 catches and 21 yards against San Francisco.

There has been much discussion around the Seahawks defense - their pass defense in particular - and its inconsistency throughout the season. They are allowing the most passing yards (256 yards per game) amongst all teams and are ranked 27th overall defensively...the 24.8 points per game they are giving up also rank 27th in the NFL. The team allowed Brock Purdy to complete nearly 90 percent of his passes for 254 yards, with 150 of those yards went to Brandon Aiyuk. The nickel cornerback position continues to raise concerns for Seattle, and the interaction between Metcalf and Woolen may have involved addressing the play of the Seahawks' secondary. Head coach Pete Carroll, however, dismissed any tension between Metcalf and Woolen and said that both the offense and defense needed to play better against the 49ers.

"We made mistakes on both sides of the ball and didn't play our best. And I understand that D.K. and Tariq are both very serious about their game, so it's fine to be passionate about the loss...that's probably a good thing. We just want to be able to channel that anger into better execution and a better performance next time we're on the field."

New England's 2-6 start to the season left them in an ominous position regarding their postseason hopes. But after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers by a score of 31 to 21 on Sunday, the Patriots have now won 5 consecutive games and find themselves in the middle of a tightly contested AFC playoff race. There's still some work to be done to get ahead of the Baltimore Ravens (9-4) and Miami Dolphins (8-5), the two teams currently holding the wild card spots if the season were to end today, and New England still has to contend with Denver (7-6), Jacksonville (7-6), as well as the Steelers (7-6). Their final 4 games are against the Chiefs, Broncos, and Bills.

Here were other things to note for Week 14:

• Playing spoiler? Lions, Browns, Rams all deal blow to playoff-aspiring teams
  Detroit, Cleveland, and Los Angeles have no chance to make the playoffs, but that's not to say they can't be the reason why another team won't make it either. The Lions delivered a stunning win over the NFC North-leading Chicago Bears to put them in a 3-way tie for the division lead with the Packers and Vikings. The Browns handed the Jacksonville Jaguars a 21-point defeat to keep them from matching Tennessee's 8-5 record. The Rams went on the road and took down the Baltimore Ravens, knocking them down to 2nd place in the AFC North behind Cincinnati. And as of right now, there's no guarantee that the Bears, Jags, or Ravens are safe from postseason elimination.

• It's Philly's division and conference to lose after sweeping the Cowboys
  The Eagles defeated the Cowboys for a second time this season to retake the NFC East lead and now control their destiny in the division as well as the NFC. If the Eagles win their remaining 4 games against the Seattle Seahawks, New York Giants (twice), and Arizona Cardinals, they will clinch not only the division title in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2001 and 2002, but a first-round bye and home field advantage in the playoffs for a second straight year.

• Kansas City defeats Buffalo but needs a bit of help to climb atop the AFC
  Patrick Mahomes pulled the Chiefs (9-4) 1 game closer to the AFC's best record after a 314-yard and 3 touchdown performance against the Bills (10-3). The Chiefs have been on a roll as of late, winning 6 of their last 8 games and are in a good position to win their 8th straight AFC West title under head coach Andy Reid. They'll need the Bills to lose at least one more game however to finish the season at the top of the AFC.
