THE FAMILY MAN
With all of his accomplishments, you would think basketball was the most important thing in Derek’s life. But he says it comes a close second to his family. He loves to keep everyone close, starting with his cousin and manager Devin Carr. Carr is also the president of Dark Horse Management.

“Devin is more than just my cousin. He’s my best friend, he’s my brother. He believed in me and this journey, more than I believed in it sometimes. He was really with me shooting in the gym. That is my Day One.”

After winning his second gold medal in Tokyo, Derek abruptly announced his retirement. His wife and his parents had an idea, but the one person who knew about it for sure was Devin.

“He talked about it a lot before going to Vegas, especially after everything with his mom. There was so much going on for him personally in his last season and he felt like he accomplished all that he wanted to and he was satisfied. He just wanted to fulfill this obligation and walk away from the game at peace.”

Derek’s sole focus was his family the entire time he was out. His wife, Naya Rivera, was pregnant with their first child during the Olympics. Jordan Carter Baldwin was born in January 2021.

“When the doctor put him in my arms, I knew I made the right decision. I wasn’t going to have any interest in going back to the gym with this little guy at home. Not to mention I wanted my wife to be able to enjoy her career as well. It was easy to balance when it was just us, but now we had the little guy to add to the mix. I wanted that transition back to be seamless for her.”

The couple had only been married for about 18 months, but they had been together for five years by then. They started dating shortly a few months after his arrival to Los Angeles.

“She and I have always been friends. Since I’ve met her we have been friends. People always ask if she was the reason I moved to Los Angeles.”

“I’d like to think that I was a factor,” she said.

“She was not as big of a factor as she likes to think,” he says, laughing.

As much as he is in his element on the court, this is really where he feels like he serves his purpose. As a husband, father, son and best friend. He also took that time to expand his business portfolio. He continued to build his brand off the court. Not only was he working on endorsement deals, but he was building partnerships with brands as well. He was still active with NBA Cares, he did some broadcasting during the NBA Finals. He did international camps with Nike. He became an investor with Black owned business around Los Angeles and in New Orleans. He began the Derek Baldwin Diamond Academy, which focuses not only on top high school players, but also some international and Junior College players as well.

“We wanted the best players from smaller schools. I wanted to help put kids in a better position than I was as far as exposure and getting the opportunities to let their game shine. Everybody doesn’t get to play on a national stage in high school. Everybody isn’t on a Nike Select team.”

Being a Stay-at-Home Dad was very rewarding for Derek. There were always photos of him on social media doing things with his son, Jordan. Going to the park, going to sporting events, going grocery shopping, hanging out at the beach. Even when he returned to the court, he tried to spend as much time with his kids as possible.

“I remember all of the time that I was able to spend with my father and I wanted the same experience for my son. I also remember the times that I wasn’t able to spend with him after he and my mom split when I was 16 and how much that impacted my life as well. I make breakfast, I do school pickups and drop offs. I’m at Show and Tell in full uniform because my kid wants me there. I’m helping with homework. Even if I had to take a meeting, sometimes Jordan would be right there with me and Devin. I always want to be present.”

“Yeah, he is really domesticated,” said Naya. She recounted the story of Baldwin leaving with a few minutes left in the Nets’ first playoff game in 2026 to make it to the hospital in time for the birth of their twins. “He ran all the way to the hospital to avoid the traffic, in his Nets’ warmups mind you, and still managed to stop at Junior’s to get a slice of cheesecake for me.”

“Family is priority number one,” said Derek. “I wasn’t missing that moment for anything.”

On a rather quiet Saturday morning, Derek is making breakfast for his family. The Brooklyn Heights condo slowly begins to fill with people as Noah and Devin show up to eat. The day is spent watching Disney movies and talking sports before going to Brooklyn Pier.

“He is in his element,” said Devin. “He is a huge family guy and he just loves to take care of people.”

“I was at peace with my decision. I didn’t feel a need to go back to the game. I had everything I wanted.”

Of course just because he decided he was done with the game that didn’t mean the game was done with him. After a full year into his retirement, his phone began to ring with offers from teams, not just to play, but also to coach.

“That was crazy,” said Baldwin. “I think the first call came from the Jazz. They wanted me to come on as an assistant coach. But I was good doing my thing at home with my family.”

After two years of the phone ringing, he finally started considering answering the calls. It wasn’t long after returning from Europe for the second leg of his wife’s world tour.

“Between working the camps and seeing Naya just doing what she loves made me think about wanting to get back out there. After having Jordan, she got right back to work. Music, filming, touring. She and I talked about it and she gave me the final push that I needed to do it.”

“He kept coming up with excuse after excuse as to why he shouldn’t do it,” she said. “Jordan was happy and healthy, his mom’s cancer had gone into remission. Things were as good as they could possibly get. So, I told him if he was scared just say that he was scared. I wouldn’t love him any less.”

Derek laughed. “She knows how to push my buttons. And I also think she was tired of me being a Trophy Husband.”

After talking with his wife, he called the other woman in his life, his mother.

“I talked to my mom about a possible return to the court. She basically said the same thing as Naya. Her health was much better than it was three years ago and that I didn’t need to worry about her. It was time for me to start living my life again. I love my family. They mean everything to me. I know that none of this would be possible without their support.”

“I feel like he gave up on his dreams too soon,” said Patricia. “Like he cut his story too short because he was worried about me. And while I love him dearly for that sacrifice, I didn’t want him to have any regrets.”

So, once it was decided that he would go back to coaching, the next question was where.

Not arguing with the woman pushing tiny humans through a small space. If cheesecake keeps DB out of the dog house, he will pick up the cheesecake! :yep:

HELLO BROOKLYN
Several teams were in contention for Derek’s services, Miami, Cleveland, New York, and Minnesota among those. But the deal that made the most sense was Brooklyn. So, after a three year hiatus, it was announced that Baldwin would return as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets. Baldwin was the Nets’ fifth head coach in 10 seasons. While his return to the NBA as a coach was a surprise to fans, it wasn’t to those who knew him well.

“That was a logical next step for him,” said Kobe Bryant. Bryant had become a mentor and close friend to Baldwin over the years before eventually becoming his assistant and then head coach. “If there was any way that he would be part of this game again without actually playing it, this would be it. He has a mind for the game and while being a student, he likes to teach. He called me and asked what I thought about it, the conversation was brief, but obviously impactful.”

The Nets not only made Baldwin the head coach, but they gave him total control of player personnel. A request that was made by Jason Kidd when he was appointed head coach in 2013 that was denied at that time. When Baldwin was hired, the Nets had the 2021 Rookie of the Year, Shareef O’Neal and the reigning Sixth Man of the Year and Most Improved Player, Michael Bibby, Jr. and Keith Perkins, respectively. The Nets hadn’t made the playoffs since 2018, where the Miami Heat had given them a swift first round exit. Despite having Bibby and O’Neal, the Nets only won 25 games during the 2020-2021 season. It allowed them to draft Perkins with the number two pick in 2021, but the following two seasons saw the Nets with less than 40 wins.

“In my mind, there was no way that a team with this much talent shouldn’t have been making the Eastern Conference Finals. So, I made it very clear that I needed control over my roster. That was the only thing that was important to me. I wanted to be able to build my team the way that I wanted. I had that conversation with ownership and I wanted it in writing. If I wanted to trade a player who’s an All-Star or a player who’s a fan favorite, I needed them to be confident that I was making the right decision for the team,” said Baldwin. “This team was not performing as well as they could, and I told them I didn’t want to just be a vanity hire. That would get old quickly. These fans deserved more. This city deserved more. If I came here I was coming to win.”

Despite asking for patience the first two seasons, Baldwin came in and started making moves immediately. The Nets needed leaders, so the first thing he did was sign Paul George and Greg Monroe during free agency. George had been in Indiana for 13 seasons, and it was obvious the team was starting to move in a different direction. Both he and Monroe were seeing their minutes dwindle as the Pacers were backing younger players Myles Turner and George Jeffries. PG was considering retirement before he got the call that would revive his career. Once Paul inked a 4 year deal with the Nets, he called Greg and told him they had room for him too.

Having a former player as their head coach was proving to be a boon for the Nets as Derek still had strong relationships throughout the league and was being viewed as player’s coach. Baldwin also reached out to his good friend Joe Hood, who was a former Sixth Man of the Year, and signed him as well.

Everything seemed to be in place for a successful rookie coaching campaign for Baldwin, but it wasn’t all roses for the Nets. The season got off to a rough start as there was some friction between point guard Keith Perkins and Derek Baldwin as the new head coach was trying to implement a system that wasn’t as guard heavy as Perkins liked.

“I felt like he was trying to change the way I played, the things that made me a success,” said Perkins. “And I wasn’t looking at from the point of these changes making the team a success. This was my third season and second coach and my focus was on establishing myself in the league. We weren’t winning, hadn’t won in a long time, so I was trying to make sure I stood out. Coach wasn’t having that.”

Perkins started to come off the bench to start the season and even missed a few games, but seeing that team was off to a hot start, he decided to lean into what Derek was saying. By the end of the season, Perkins’ assists numbers were up and his name was being tossed around in the MVP conversation. Derek was named 2024 Coach of the Year. Most importantly, the Nets went on an 11 game win streak at the end of the season to finish with the league’s best record with 57 wins and were the number one seed in the playoffs. The Nets organization hadn’t seen a season like that since going 52-30 over 20 years prior.

The Nets breezed through the 2024 NBA Playoffs and made it to the Eastern Conference Finals where they faced the 76ers, losing in 6 games.

The following season, Baldwin wanted to add one more piece to the Nets puzzle, as the front office hired Kobe Bryant as his assistant coach.

“I couldn’t think of anybody who could help with player development like Kobe,” said Derek.

Brooklyn managed to keep the roster consistent that next season. The team got even better, finishing with 65 wins and Keith Perkins won his first MVP trophy. But they found themselves without Perkins and George during the Eastern Conference Finals and lost to Philly again.

“We thought this was our chance. It was bittersweet. If everyone was healthy, we definitely would have won this series,” said George.

In Baldwin’s third season as head coach, they made bold moves during the 2025 NBA Draft, picking up not one, but three rookies in the first round through trades. Nate Matthews and Andre Palmer from LSU, who had just won an NCAA Championship two months prior, and Adam Demps out of DePaul. This brought a lot of depth to the Nets’ bench.

“These were players that could be put in a position where they didn’t have to deal with the immediate pressure of carrying a team. They could grow and learn at a respectable pace.”

Baldwin and Demps had a very different relationship as Baldwin was a friend of the family and Demps’ neighbor during his time in Chicago. He was instrumental in Adam’s growth as a player so his being drafted by the Nets brought everything full circle for them. Their journey was rough and nearly led to Demps demanding a trade, but he stuck it out. Unbeknownst to them both, Demps would also be key in getting Baldwin back on the court.

“It was tough in the beginning knowing the ties that Derek had with my family,” said Demps. “But I was able to put my game to the forefront and show that I deserved to be in the NBA just like everybody else.”

With the Nets appearing to be a lock for the title that year, the unthinkable happened, in November. They lost Bibby for the season after suffering a torn ACL. They found themselves in a real battle as Brooklyn’s plans to bring their rookies along slowly was being tossed out of the window.

“Keith was pushing himself to the max trying to make up for what we lost in Mike, while we were still waiting for Palmer to go from eighth on the roster to a starter. It was tough.”

Then one night over dinner. Adam decided to throw out the idea of Derek possibly playing for the Nets instead of coaching. It started as speculation on social media, then it became a serious discussion between the players before the idea was presented to their head coach.

“Even then, I was hesitant,” said Baldwin. “I’m 38 years old and these guys are asking me to play with them.”

After about two weeks of deliberation, and big loss to the Washington Wizards, Baldwin decided to trade in the suit for a jersey, signing a one year contract with Brooklyn. Adam Demps readily gave up his jersey number and switched to the number four, which was Derek’s old number in Chicago.

The Dark Horse was back.

His first game was on New Year’s Eve when the Nets faced the Magic in Brooklyn. His first basket was a corner three. He went on to knock down five of eight shots from beyond the arc that night. He scored 24 points in his Nets debut.

“I was nervous,” recalled Baldwin. “I didn’t want to mess anything up. I didn’t want the guys trying too hard to include me.”

With Baldwin on the floor, Brooklyn’s game went to a completely different level. He was locking players up on defense, allowing the team to play a run and gun style that he had played during his days as a Clipper. The Nets finished the season 73-9, then the best record in the NBA history, surpassing the 1997-98 Chicago Bulls. They went on 19 game win streak, not losing a game since February 27, 2026. Shareef O’Neal was named MVP, Nate Matthews was named Rookie of the Year, and Kobe Bryant was named Coach of the Year.

There was only thing left for the Nets to do: win a championship.

“There were lots of accolades for the guys this season. I don’t think we’ve seen a more decorated team,” said Bryant. “All-Stars, All-NBA, All-Rookie, and All-Defensive teams, MVP, ROY. Everywhere you looked, our guys were there. But the job wasn’t finished.”

Brooklyn breezed through the 2026 NBA Playoffs, taking down Cleveland, Orlando, and Charlotte who was making their first ever Eastern Conference Finals appearance. The sixth seed Hornets had upset the third seed Sixers in the first round. They ran into a buzz saw in Brooklyn and were swept, giving the Nets their first real opportunity at a title in 50 years.

Derek Baldwin found himself across from his friend and former teammate Blake Griffin and the Dallas Mavericks. Neither had been back to the Finals since Baldwin left the Clippers in 2020.

“The moment definitely wasn’t lost on us,” said Griffin. “He texted me as soon as we had won the Western Conference Finals.”

The series seemed to be going as expected, as everyone assumed the Nets were going to sweep the Mavericks. But the Mavs actually pulled off a surprise victory in Game 4.

“Everyone kept insinuating that I was trying to win the trophy at Barclays,” said Baldwin. “I didn’t care where we won, we just wanted to win. Winning the first one at home was pretty sweet though.”

The Nets ended a 50 year championship drought in a packed Barclays Center, adding to the legend of Derek Baldwin.

With Michael Bibby, Jr. refusing to re-sign with the Nets that following summer, Baldwin signed on for three more seasons in Brooklyn and the league was back under his control once again. The Nets had won their third straight championship when fans started to wonder if Baldwin would ask for a trade for the opportunity to play with his nephew, who was drafted 20th by the Knicks.

He opted to stick around for the final season of his contract and face off against Noah instead.

“I wanted to let him enjoy his rookie season. Let him come into his own,” said Derek. “The thought never crossed my mind to try and be traded to wherever he played his first season. Him playing for the Knicks was great because that was going to make for some intense basketball.”

And he was right, after four intense games during the regular season, Brooklyn and New York found themselves facing off in the Eastern Conference Finals, which the Nets managed to win in six games, before winning their fourth straight championship.

FINAL RUN
The summer after the Nets’ fourth championship, a lot of speculation surrounded whether or not one of the league’s biggest stars would finally retire. He declined to re-sign with the Nets and spent the summer in Los Angeles. While he was there, he joined his nephew and family friend, Remy Benoit, for a few games at the famed Drew League. A tweet by Dwyane Wade calling out the Knicks, along with some footage of the game, got tongues wagging.

“I was just enjoying my summer. My nephew went to the Drew and asked if I’d run with him and Remy. Thought nothing of it at the time. Everybody really has D. Wade to thank for this,” joked Baldwin. “Once he posted that video, the internet went crazy.”

So crazy in fact, that he got a call from Knicks GM Landry Fields that same day. After discussing it with those closest to him, Noah included, three days later he made it official. Derek Baldwin was being gifted the opportunity to make history by playing with the New York Knicks during his final season and teaming up with his nephew.

“Just like signing with the Clippers thirteen years ago, this was an opportunity that I could not pass up. I also wanted people to have the chance to enjoy the retirement season. It was very abrupt in Los Angeles. Nobody knew that they were watching what would have been my final season. And while I did go out a champion, I didn’t feel like I played my best ball that last season. A part of me walked away out of fear.”

Aside from Noah and Derek being the first uncle-nephew duo to play on the same team, this season was full of history for the New York Knicks. They made league history by winning the most games ever with a record of 81-1. They snapped the 1971 Lakers’ 33 game win streak by winning 50 straight games this season. They are now also the fastest team to 50 wins having done so in 50 games.

“I told them at the start of the season that we could be extraordinary and have a year that none of them would ever forget. But everybody had to trust each other and buy in to what we were trying do as a club. I promised them they would work harder than they probably ever had in their lives, but I would be with them every step of the way.”

The final season began as most final seasons do, in training camp.

“When I got to the locker room, there was a box of adult diapers and a cane with my Knicks jersey laying across the top.”

“The Old Man”, as he was affectionately called by his teammates, definitely took his job as mentor and team captain seriously. During games, he could be seen sitting with guys and talking to them, explaining what he was seeing on the court. This caused a notable shift in the way the players conducted themselves in games as the effect trickled down. Players could be seen talking more in huddles, helping each other up off the floor, supporting each other, communicating more. Outside of games, he would spend time with the guys in practice, even on days that he wasn’t physically practicing. Players said he was always a call or a text away if they wanted to get in some extra runs or review film.

“I definitely took advantage of those one on one sessions,” said Benoit. “Seeing how he works up close as a player in that setting in real time was a definite benefit and I didn’t want to miss it. We were able to form our own version of the Breakfast Club like Jordan and the Bulls.”

Derek’s Breakfast Club consisted of himself, Noah, Remy, Chet Holmgren and, once he joined the team in December, Michael Mitchell.

“It was important that all those younger guys saw me in that capacity. I’m not just talking the talk. It also gave me the opportunity to see who wanted to put in the work and who didn’t. Separating the wheat from the chaff, as my pops likes to say.”

But in his providing support, he may have faded into the background a bit too much at the start of the season. Baldwin said things shifted for him around November. After receiving a reality check from his family, we saw a much different Derek Baldwin for the rest of the season.

“He definitely forced us to play harder after that 41 point game against Cleveland,” said Chet. “We didn’t know the story behind it at first, but it was like 'Damn, he is not taking his final season lightly.' We had to match his energy.”

Baldwin’s energy was met in spades as the Knicks tore through the season winning 81 games and Derek saw himself awarded the league’s Sixth Man of the Year.

“This award is just as important as winning MVP,” said Derek. “It shows just how much my teammates trusted me to carry them through games. It’s a big deal. A lot hinges on the strength of the second unit and I’m glad I was trusted to lead them.”

The Knicks only turned up the intensity once the NBA Playoffs began as they took home the title. The third title in Knicks’ franchise history and the first since 1973. A lot of former Knicks players were on hand to witness such a historic night, much like when Baldwin brought the Los Angeles Clippers and the Brooklyn Nets their first championships in front of Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Vinny Del Negro and Derrick Coleman; Julius Erving, Keith Van Horn, and Buck Williams, respectively.

“It’s always great to share this moment with legends. I wish Bill [Russell] was here to see this.” Baldwin has now tied the late Bill Russell with the most championships by winning his 11th title. “He has a leg up on me because he won all of his with the Celtics, while I chose to spread the wealth.”

Bottles of champagne are still being opened in the Knicks locker room as Derek Baldwin is holding court in the Knicks’ press room. He’s dressed in a Tom Ford suit, wearing a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses. He tells reporters that he had the suit put in another room to avoid any spills. He holds his Finals MVP trophy like it’s one of his children. When he does put the trophy down, he immediately asks for his actual children. He holds his four-year old twins on his lap, while his nine-year old son takes a seat next to him and his wife takes the other seat. His daughter, Gabrielle, takes his sunglasses off and decides to wear them herself, as her twin brother, Devin, tries to take the microphone off the table. His oldest, Jordan, holds his Finals MVP trophy. Derek checks to make sure it’s not too heavy for him. He assures him it’s not. This isn’t Jordan’s first championship celebration, but his eyes light up all the same at holding his dad’s trophy.

“My wife rarely lets them all into the room,” he says. “But tonight is special.”

This is officially his last press conference of his NBA career for the foreseeable future. His teammates pop in and out of the room to share their congratulations and get him back to the locker room to enjoy the celebration. His nephew comes in all smiles and it’s a somber family moment. The torch is officially being passed down. He stays in the press conference until his uncle is done. Derek is singing his nephew’s praises, while Noah is trying to deflect saying that he wouldn’t be where he is without his Uncle D’s guidance.

Derek lets the press conference go on a little bit longer than normal. He doesn’t want to miss a single question. The reporters say that he has actually been a good sport this season. Win or lose, although they were mostly winning. Even with the lone loss this season, he was still in good spirits. When asked what he will miss the most he jokingly replies, “Sitting in this room with you guys. Y’all can really make or break a career. God knows Skip [Bayless] and Liz [Habib] tried to ruin mine a few times.”

Then he turns serious. “I’m going to miss all of it. The fans, my teammates, the memories. And it’s not that I don’t love the game, but I don’t obsess about it as much as I once did. I have given the game everything and in return I have achieved everything. Literally everything, except Defensive Player of the Year,” he says with a grin. “I have travelled the world playing this game. I was able to build my family because of this game. This game will always be a part of me, and I’ll always be a part of it.”

Derek's career has gone through many phases and he's managed to reinvent himself several times. No matter the city being represented on the front, the one thing that remains constant among them is the word champion. We appreciate everything that you have given to us and to the game, Derek Baldwin. Enjoy your (second) retirement.
