“Good game tonight, fellas. That’s twelve straight wins to start the season. Two over Brooklyn. You know I don’t care if we don’t win shit else, but I don’t like losing to Brooklyn or Boston.”

“I don’t think eight wins is gonna be enough to justify you keeping your job, Coach.” Remy said.

The whole locker room broke into laughter. It was a good night. It’s always a good night when we beat the Nets. We’re 2-0 in the series right now and won’t see them again until New Year’s Eve. They’re still without Adam so the win was a little bit smoother. We had six guys in double-figures. I had a double-double. We were just clicking.

After doing my media rounds and grabbing a quick shower, I decided to head out. I saw that I had a text from Kori telling me that she was turning in early. That was about an hour ago, so she probably didn’t even catch the end of the game. Looks like I won’t be stopping by her place tonight. It was a school night though, so I understood. I was stopped by some fans outside of Barclays and was taking a few pictures when I heard my name being called.

“Yo, Syd! I thought you would’ve been back overseas.” I signed a couple more autographs, then went over to give her a hug, but there was something between us. Literally.

“You wanna grab something to eat real quick?” She asked.

I looked at my watch and sent a quick text to the guy’s at Tony Roma’s, telling them to add some more food to the order that I sent over. Then I sent a text to Kori, which I know she won’t see until morning. I’ll deal with that when it comes though.

Just over an hour later and we were sitting in the living room at my condo with boxes of takeout in front of us. Steak for me and chicken for her. We also grabbed some cheesecake from Junior’s on the way.

“So, how far along are you?”

“Almost 17 weeks. Due in April.”

“Know what you’re having?”

“I’ll know when I go in for my next appointment in a few weeks.”

“It is Brady’s right?”

She just gave me a look.

“So, this is why you aren’t in Spain right now.”

“Well, yeah. I mean, I was able to finish the season, we didn’t make the playoffs this year, so it was cut short,” she sighed. “But I definitely couldn’t go overseas and play like this. It was the last year of my contract anyway.”

“And Brady let you fly to New York from Vegas in your condition?”

“I’m pregnant. Not an invalid. I can still fly. Besides, Brady and I aren’t together anymore.”

I stopped eating. “Is this an on again off again or…”

“No, it’s off. It’s definitely off.”

“What about the baby?”

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out. He doesn’t know.”

“The hell? Syd, I may not like the guy, but you can’t keep this from him.”

“I’ll tell him…eventually. I just wanna be around family and close friends. Fortunately, he’s preoccupied with football.”

“Only for like the next six weeks though.”

“And with the temperature starting to drop, I’ll be able to cover everything up with layers for the next few months.”

“Syd this is crazy.”

“You know what’s really crazy? Me wishing it was you.”

“What do you mean, me? Syd we’ve never—”

“I know.” I could see the tears starting to pool in her eyes. “But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wonder how different things could have been since I've found out. What if I had made different choices.”

“We were both focused on our futures at the time.”

“No, I know. But you don’t ever think about it, Noah?”

Before I could respond my phone rang. It was a Facetime call from Kori. I excused myself and went to the kitchen and answered the phone. She looked pissed.

“Sup, babe? Guess you got my message.”

“I did. Bella woke up in the middle of the night. Put the phone on the counter and back up for me.”

I did as she asked.

“Still fully clothed. Where is she?”

I was so glad I had my earbuds in.

“She’s in the living room.” I turned the camera so she could see. “Everyone is fully dressed. She’s going through something right now and wanted to talk.”

“Why does she always have to talk to you?” She sighed.

“Babe, we’re friends. I told you that. You know I didn’t have to answer this call.”

“And that’s supposed to make me feel better. Noah, if you two want to be together, do not let me stop you. I’m not going to make you choose.”

“I swear it’s not like that. And it sounds like you are trying to make me choose.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m going back to bed.”

“Kori, don’t end the call like this. I’ll stop by tomorrow, okay? We can talk about everything. We’re going on a road trip, and I won’t be back in the city for like a week. But my friend needs me right now. What if this were Iris or Remy?”

“Iris isn't trying to be with me and I don't think Remy is in love with you either. ”

“Babe, don’t do this.”

“Good night, Noah.” She ended the call before I could say anything else.

I walked back into the living room and noticed that Sydni had boxed up the take out and was walking out of the door.

“Yo, Syd. Hold up.”

“I’ve already called an Uber, it should be here by the time I get downstairs.”

“Syd, that’s crazy. I’ll drive you back to Jersey. Cancel it.”

“I’m not trying to cause any more friction between you and Kori. I don’t know what I was thinking." She said as she quickly wiped her eyes. "It’s the hormones I guess. I’ll see you around.”

“Stop playing. Q would never let me hear the end of it, if I let you take a damned Uber at this hour. And in your condition. Kori and I will be fine. We can talk some more or I can bring you home right now if you want.”

She pulled out her phone and cancelled her Uber. “I am a little tired. I think the crying has only made me more sleepy.”

“No worries. I’ll call downstairs for my car and I’ll get you back across the Hudson.”

Although I would never tell her, for the record, I have wondered. But it’s nothing that can be done about that now. And I’m actually happy with Kori…when we’re not arguing about Sydni.
