Sunderland Captain Daniel Ballard Joins Manchester United on Deadline Day

In a surprising deadline day move, Sunderland have agreed to sell their captain Daniel Ballard to Manchester United for a club record £24.5M fee. Some good faith was built with United after the recent purchase of Diallo, and Ballard at 25 years old was looking for a step up to one of the biggest clubs in world football. With him on the way out, Sunderland will look to bring in his replacement as right-sided CB before the window closes. Dan Neil is expected to assume captaincy duties for the remainder of the season following the move.

Sunderland Complete Deal for Ethan Ampadu to Replace Ballard

Sunderland have signed 24-year-old Welsh center-back, Ethan Ampadu, from Leeds United as a quick replacement to Daniel Ballard. Ampadu is arguably the better player, being extremely technically skilled and capable of even playing in central defensive or central midfield in a pinch if needed. His ball distribution ability should be a massive boost to Brendan Rodgers' possession oriented system. Before the window closes, Sunderland reportedly will look to sign a new backup goalkeeper to replace the departed Anthony Patterson.

Sunderland Complete Deal for Ethan Ampadu to Replace Ballard

Gavin Bazunu joins Sunderland from Southampton for a very reasonable £7.7M fee. The 22 year old Irish goalkeeper will be backup for Yann Sommer, but with Sommer's advanced age, should expect to be the first choice option at goalkeeper in just a couple of years. He signed a five-year contract with the club worth £25K per week.
