Season 2, Episode 5

“They’ll run with Hernandez and now he’s free with no one around him and the Yellow Jackets are up first on the scoreboard!”

...

“The first pass of the game is going to be intercepted by Justin Austin! They give up the big play on defense and now on offense, their first play of the game is a turnover! Tough start for the Eagles!”

“On first and ten, it’s Kam Seidu-Harris and he almost picks up the first down.”

“They’ll try the left side with Hernandez, and he’ll pick up the first down, cut inside and he’s in for the touchdown to extend their lead!”

“He’s going to be stopped cold behind the line of scrimmage as Blake’s DeAaron Bradshaw came through on the tackle!”

“They’ll run the draw with Seidu-Harris who does a nice job of rumbling forward to make it third and three.”

“Seidu-Harris will have the Yellow Jackets’ first down with a gain of five on third and three.”

“They go back to the ground and Seidu-Harris gets it inside the redzone as he’ll get dropped at the fifteen-yard line after a gain of six.”

“Moreno looks to the left side and he’s got Hernandez who’s going to scamper out of bounds inside of the eight-yard line. The Yellow Jackets are already lined up over the ball, ball is snapped, Hernandez on the handoff and untouched for this third touchdown of the day!”

“The throw on third down is knocked away and incomplete as the Eagles have yet to pick up a first down!”

“Short pass caught by Ron Bentley and he’s going to pick up the first down.”

“The Yellow Jackets look to throw here and it’s a deep pass to Austin who is going to come down with it for the touchdown! Call off the dogs, call the national guard and hide your children because we have a rout going down in Brandon tonight!”

The locker room was buzzing with excitement and chatter with the 30-minute bus ride not dampening the 54-0 beatdown one bit.

Justin held court, regaling his interception and the first of two touchdowns in what was a standout performance from the junior.

“If your ass turned around, I would have cribbed that bitch,” Justin complained to one of the linebackers, “Dumb ass nigga almost tackled my ass.”

“Bruh, I just turned around and seen a nigga with the ball running towards me!” Nolan pleaded his case.

“Now, why the fuck would they be running towards their own endzone?” Justin placed his hands on his hips and tilted his head.

“Them boys about sorry as fuck,” Nolan laughed, “Ain’t no telling what they was finna do.”

“You got two of them bitches,” DeWayne told Justin of his touchdowns, “Kam ain’t even get one tonight and he was toting that motherfucker.”

“That boy run like a runaway slave on third down,” DeAaron remarked, nudging Kam who was in the locker next to him, “You need to start asking for that bitch in the red zone bro.”

“Fine with me,” Kam shrugged with a smile, being one of the first to get out of his uniform, “Long as I’m getting my touches, they can have them little two-yard touchdowns, that shit don’t do nothing for me.”

“Danny had about three of them bitches?”

“Four,” Justin held his fingers up, “I told Zach to just throw that bitch up to me on that first goal line, could have gone crazy with that shit.”

Unlike the others who were still in their pads, Kam had already taken his gear off and got dressed. He had a scheduled phone call he was anxious to get to which was of much more importance to him than shooting the shit in the locker room with guys he had just met.

He made sure to dap up the offensive line on his way out, passing by Mike’s locker where Danny was also hanging out.

“You can’t keep stressing over that bitch,” Kam overheard Mike say to Danny as he went to dap him up, “Ravie ass ain’t even that cute for all this bullshit.”

“You know she fine,” Danny sucked his teeth, looking up briefly to dap Kam up.

Kam tried his best to hide his smirk as he continued his way out of the locker room, only to hear Danny call his name out. His heart jumped as the slight possibility that Ravyn might have said something to Danny about their latest encounter.

“Yo Kam! You trying to slide to this shit with us?”

Before he could answer, Mike quickly interjected, “We already got too many people coming, bro. No disrespect Kam, my parents been on bullshit lately about people coming over that they haven’t met before.”

“Don’t worry about it,” Kam shrugged, “I’m busy tonight anyway.”

“It doesn’t matter how short the movie is, you’re going to fall asleep.”

“I won’t,” Kam promised as he spoke into his phone, “Just don’t pick something long as hell, pause. Besides, last time, you fell asleep too.”

“That was different,” Lana responded on FaceTime, “I was studying that entire night before, had like an exam, a lab. It was no way that I was staying up past ten o’clock that night, no matter what.”

“What do you think my day is like?”

“None of this shit,” Lana held her phone camera up to her bevy of books on her nightstand, “This shit is just so aggravating.”

“Is it that bad?”

“It’s just…” she paused to collect her thoughts, “It’s like one thing after another. You finally catch up on all your homework and you’ve got a test to study for and then it’s another paper and then it’s feeling homesick and then you and your roommates are not talking for some bullshit reason. Like, I just need a good week. I’ll take a good couple of days.”

“It’s way different from the summer?” Kam inquired, recalling how much she had enjoyed her first semester.

“Like completely different,” she scoffed, “You only have two classes so you can make up shit if you get behind a little bit. I already had to drop two classes already so hopefully that shit helps, I don’t know how I’m going to do this for four years.”

“You’ll be fine,” Kam tried to reassure her, “I’m serious, you’re like the smartest person I know.”

“That’s not saying much,” she fired back, allowing a smile to crack through.

“I ain’t failed a test yet out here,” Kam jokingly boasted, “Princeton might be knocking on my door pretty soon.”

“How has that been going? Seriously.”

“What?”

“College and shit,” she expounded, “I know we don’t have a football team but if you really are serious about not playing ball no more…”

“I never said that,” Kam corrected her, “I just haven’t really been hearing from coaches and shit since I transferred down here. They’ll DM me every now and then but nothing serious, just keeping tabs on a nigga.”

“I’m just saying, you’re smart enough to get into here.”

“Oh, why thank you,” Kam said in a mocking tone, “It’d be my greatest honor to be the latest dickhead to go to NYU.”

“You’d kill it out here, everyone here is so fucking corny and stuck up. They’d be all over you.”

“Is that a compliment?”

“It is,” she laughed, “Now, can we finally watch this movie?”

“I’ve been waiting on your ass,” Kam sucked his teeth, “You the one whining and shit about your grades like you Jamal or something.”

“Never that,” they both laughed at Jamal’s expense, a tale as old as time.

Season 2, Episode 6

Danny took his time getting to his feet, rejecting the help of several of his linemen as he swatted their hands away.

He shook his head in disappointment as he saw Kam slowly jogging towards him, bypassing the customary slap of hands as one player swapped out another.

The duo had worked in harmony in the previous two games against Middleton and Freedom with Kam’s physical running style setting the table for long runs by Danny against a tired and weakened defense that was frankly avoiding having to tackle anymore.

Jefferson was proving to be a tougher challenge, even with their abysmal record, as they had held Danny to less than five yards on his first four touches of the game.

Kam settled himself behind Zach, digging his feet into the turf as a way of loosening up his ankle. The ball was snapped and buried into his stomach as Kam barreled forward, fully expecting to make contact with an oncoming linebacker as he hit the A-gap.

The contact never came and no one was more surprised than Kam as he lowered his shoulder against an imaginary defender, only to realize it and turn on the burners.

“That’s a touchdown for the Yellow Jackets as Seidu-Harris goes untouched through the heart of the defense!”

Kam had finally caught his breath when the coaching staff called for the offense to get ready. He grabbed his helmet, letting it rest by his side as he waited for coach Howell to gather up Danny who was hanging out by the trainer’s table.

“You’re in,” coach Howell returned from his brief conversation with coach Sutton, “Danny’s out.”

“What’s wrong with him?” Kam asked, looking over to him as he wasn’t getting any treatment.

“Says his ankle hurts,” coach Howell shrugged, “Fuck do I know, right?”

“Seidu-Harris follows his blockers and that’s another first down as he’s pushed out of bounds.”

“Not much there but Seidu-Harris pushes the pile forward and picks up six yards on the carry.”

“Quick dump to the flats and Seidu-Harris has space, makes a defender miss, cuts inside and he’s going to get the first down.”

“Moreno pump fakes, draw play to Seidu-Harris, finds some room on the inside and he’s going to bounce it to the outside and he’s going to score his second touchdown of the day!”

“Another carry for Seidu-Harris and he’s over the century mark, completely dominating this game.”

“He gets to the corner and that’s his third touchdown of the day for the senior running back. Take a bow young man, what a performance!”

“They were whooping your ass last night?” Marcus remarked, noticing the bruises on Kam’s arm as they pulled into the driveway.

“The other way around,” Kam scoffed, “Ran for about one-seventy-five on them boys’ head.”

“You was cutting up, huh?” Marcus laughed, opening the garage door as they made their way into Johnny’s house that was really his girlfriend’s, “Now listen, don’t go for nothing just trying to prove you that you’re tough or something.”

Marcus’ warning didn’t make much sense to Kam until he reached the living room and saw the weapons that were laid out on the coffee table. He wasn’t no fool and knew that they carried, even noticing the bulge in Johnny or Marcus’ pants if they were in a particularly ominous spot late at night but never like this.

“You ready to pop your cherry?” Johnny had a shit-eating grin on his face, “You told him the situation?”

Marcus shook his head as he plopped down on the couch and took out a pre-rolled blunt from his back pocket, “It’s your shit, you explain it.”

“We’ve got a nice little situation,” Johnny began, “We just need a third head, that’s all with Andre locked up and what not and Aaron being a straight green ass fuck boy.”

“Man, we about to rob a fucking house,” Marcus interrupted him, “Shouldn’t be nobody in that bitch, no alarm or nothing but you never know so we need a third person just to be an extra sight of eyes and ears. I ain’t expecting you to tote no pistol or nothing."

Kam was no stranger to flirting with the criminal line, having been with them when they would maybe rob a drunk patron at a bar or fuck with someone for shits and giggle. But this, this felt different.

“I’m with it,” he replied with no hesitation, knowing he didn’t have much of a say in the matter once it got this far.

“About six niggas,” Snow reminisced, “Yeah, they all jumped that nigga and forced him to check out, some real bitch shit if you ask me.”

“Shit,” remarked one of the younger guys, Tio, “If you got the numbers, you might as well run that bitch and make the whole pod yours. Don’t make no sense not to use it to your advantage.”

“No doubt,” Snow cleared his throat, “But for a fade, my nigga? Let me get my squabble with a nigga, one-on-one, no bullshit, no nothing. When it comes to business? Of course, it becomes gang related and we locking shit down but ones? I gotta have my ones, my nigga.”

“I ain’t fighting no nigga in jail one-on-one,” Bernard, who everyone called B-Wood, chimed in, “I learned that shit the hard way. It’s one-on-one till it ain’t and I ain’t gonna be the one to find out it ain’t one-on-one in the middle of the fight. I’m coming with all my patnas and we getting it down and if you ain’t got no patnas, that’s on you.”

“But you also a bitch ass nigga,” Snow said nonchalantly, taking a sip of his drink.

The party paused, as if they were waiting for Snow to clarify his statement or perhaps break out into laughter. B-Wood and Snow had known each other for years so ball breaking came with the territory but there wasn’t a single smile on none of their faces.

“The fuck you said, nigga?” B-Wood held himself back from jumping off his chair as he griped the arm rest tightly.

“He ain’t heard me,” Snow looked towards Curtis who kept his eyes fixated on everyone that came to the party with B-Wood.

“We just having a good time man,” Tio tried to ease the tension, “This your welcome home party, Snow. We just happy you back home, bruh.”

“They still ain’t heard me,” Snow cackled before jumping to his feet and whacking the sitting B-Wood with the bottle that was in his hand.

“Stay the fuck back!” Snow quickly exclaimed to the group as he got on top of B-Wood that was now holding his head and keeled over on the ground.

He kicked him to the midsection a few times, causing him to lay flat on the ground. He drove his fist into the back of his head, each punch more violent than its predecessor.

“Ayo man!” yelled one of the onlookers but no one dared step in.

With his hand swelling up, Snow turned B-Wood over so that he was facing him and started ramming his forearm into his face, busting him up with every shot until he laid unconscious on the floor.

“You disrespect my cousin you disrespect me nigga!” Snow caught his breath as he got to his feet, grabbing a nearby towel to wipe the blood from his arm, “And the price of disrespect must be paid at all fucking times, my nigga.”

It didn’t make sense to Kam that a few hours ago, they were in someone’s house robbing them of all their precious belongings; snatching a couple jewelry pieces, some cash and two video game systems.

“Did I break your boy?”

“What you talking about?” Marcus took a reprieve from Brit’s neck as he looked up towards Jasmine who was toying around with her glass of wine.

“He ain’t talking to me no more,” she motioned toward Kam, who was sunken into the couch and aimless watching the television screen in front of him.

They were in the common living area of Jasmine and Brit’s dorm, heading straight there after the robbery as an alibi in case it was ever tied to them, which Marcus assured Kam that it never would.

“I’m just chilling,” Kam snapped out of it long enough to answer.

“Are you mad we haven’t hooked up or something? Playing hard to get?”

Kam had learned to understand his role whenever Marcus would bring him along to Brit’s and it was to keep Jasmine occupied, no matter her lack of interest. He was failing on this particular night as she was now involving Marcus and Brit in their conversations.

“My boy ain’t press for pussy,” Marcus defended his protégé with a scoff, “Tell her, bruh. You are looking at a varsity all-star now, baby. You better hop on the motherfucking train before it takes off.”

“Fucking a high school nigga is like,” Jasmine imitated a retching sound, “I’m too grown for all of that.”

“You just graduated high school yourself,” Kam shrugged, “You got a little gas station wine that Marcus got for you and you feeling grown now?”

Marcus and Brit exited the conversation and resumed their own activities.

“My pussy grown,” she fired back with a bit of a slur, “You got a grown dick?”

“I’ve been trying to let you find out, but you want to play hard to get,” Kam answered, “Shit, Michael Jordan don’t beg nobody to play for the Bulls.”

“He got lines and shit,” Jasmine genuinely laughed, “Excuse me, who you been fucking to get your confidence up like this?”

“The real convo is who you ain’t been fucking,” Kam looked at her, “And it’s the right motherfucking one.”

The effectiveness of the lines were being aided by the Barefoot that Jasmine had been sipping on for an hour or so, “If you want some pussy, just say that.”

“I don’t want no pussy,” Kam looked away as he shook his head, “I want you.”

“I just might end up fucking you tonight if we keep playing around like this,” Jasmine laughed to herself as she finished off her glass of wine.
