Season 4, Episode 10
“Wasn’t this what you wanted?”

“Yeah but,” Kam sighed, recognizing the look of frustration on Dr. Bracco’s face, which she usually hid well, “Transferring was my plan, but I don’t know, things are different now.”

“Different how?” Dr. Bracco asked, her eyes narrowing in concern, “You know I’ve been a big advocate of you enjoying your time here and not letting this just be a pit stop but a part of your journey. I just want to help you flesh out your decision making, something we’ve always discussed.”

“I mean, shit is going good here, why fuck it up? I mean, I’m probably going to be the focus of the offense next year, get even more touches. I can probably get even better offers next year if I jump into the portal after a full year of starting, a bunch of film. Yeah, I had stats and shit but the first time any coach is going to bring up right now is my game against Vanderbilt, I didn’t really snap like that and that was probably the best team I played this year. And then there’s Yassy.”

“Who’s Yassy?”

Kam groaned, realizing he had slipped up, “Just this girl I’ve been seeing.”

“It’s important that you share freely in our sessions, Kam.”

“I know, I know,” he sighed, “We’ve been talking for a bit, really the only person out here that I really talk to like that, every single day.”

“That’s important,” Dr. Bracco smiled softly, “Relationships can certainly influence our decisions.”

“We’re not together or anything,” Kam quickly corrected her.

“You don’t have to be together,” she made air quotes through the laptop screen, “We are who we are and we do what we do based on a variety of factors and a big factor is the relationships that we have, doesn’t have to romantic in nature.”

“I just don’t want to have another Boston College situation,” Kam admitted, “I’m good here, why fuck it up?”

They sat on the grassy hill overlooking the campus, the sun setting in a blaze of orange and pink. The campus was bristling with activity as students were walking to and from their exams, others were thrilled that it was in the rearview mirror, as was the case for the seated duo.

“I’m not going to lie,” Yassy started, “Orgo was kicking my ass.”

“The few guys on the team that are in Med always complain about that class,” Kam laughed, “What the hell they got y’all doing in that class?”

“Pure torture,” she shook her head, “You get your grades back for all of your classes?”

“Pretty much,” Kam answered, “When I did the Canvas thing to see what your grade would be like if you scored this or that, as long as I don’t get like a D type shit, I’m straight.”

“You really did your thing this semester,” Yassy’s expression softened as she turned to Kam, “I know you probably think it’s corny and whatever but I’m proud of you, especially with what you did for Amy.”

“Thanks,” Kam looked away, “I mean, it didn’t really do anything but felt like the right thing to do after we spoke about it."

“You still did something,” she reassured him, “You should try to get other players on the team to speak up too, maybe they saw something or even heard something after the fact. You know how guys talk, I’m sure one of them showed a video at some point to somebody.”

“I don’t know,” Kam stammered, “Even if I did ask them, not like any of them would actually do it, especially if I leave and shit.”

“Oh,” she stopped herself, “I didn’t realize you were thinking of leaving.”

“Nah, it’s just,” Kam scrambled for the right words, “With the portal and everything, maybe I could end up somewhere, play ball at a bigger school or something. Not like there’s anything wrong with this school or anything.”

“It’s not good enough for you,” she scoffed, “You can be such a bitch sometimes.”

“It’s not even like that,” Kam protested, “If you could go somewhere better, I would tell you to do it.”

“If I could go somewhere better,” she laughed, “Congratulations Kam, you were the best player on a sorry ass team, who gives a fuck? And those teammates that you’re protecting, who you clearly don’t even give a shit about, you know how many of them tried to fuck me? Even after we were talking? Tried to slide in my DMs, walk with me after class and shit? Those same teammates you were talking about that have Orgo? Yes, those fucking teammates.”

Kam had seen her passion bubble at times, mainly during debates and conversations with others but never directed at him, not like this, “Ain’t nobody protecting nobody, I just said that I was thinking about, just fucking thinking, about my options.”

“Boy, fuck you.”

As much as you push the portal in everyone else's RTGs I'd figured Kam would be dipping as soon as the 4th quarter ended.

Season 4, Episode 11
“Those must be some Bergen squats.”

Kam was content to be a spectator, joining Mr. Thompson in his criticism of Jamal’s squat depth, “Bergen Catholic got our boy soft.”

“Why don’t y’all jump in?” Jamal fired back once he caught his breath, holding his arms over his head.

“I can just now walk normal again,” Kam stretched out his legs, “We don’t get the Normatec and all that fancy stuff like y’all.”

“That’s why you need to come up to the big boys,” Jamal was unrelenting, “I’m telling you, it’s a whole different sport pretty much.”

Kam hadn’t given it much more thought with his mind preoccupied with the curly haired matter back in Indiana that was unresponsive to his texts. They had retired to their respective corners for the winter break and the fondness in his heart was only growing, even with the ways they left things.

“He’s right,” Mr. Thompson remarked, “Say what you want about Bergen but the gap between them and what they had y’all doing at Pascack was night and day, completely different regimen and just a whole lot more support. Now, imagine that tenfold at the college level.”

“I don’t know,” Kam ran his fingers through his locks, “I feel like I’m still developing and stuff, I’d rather do that and play than go somewhere and not play.”

“I know I’ve been complaining and stuff but it’s way better,” Jamal assured him, “You can only get so much better playing against people you way better than and you’re already their best player. You’re only going to continue to level up the more you play against top guys in practice, every day. Now, I ain’t going to vouch for Kentucky because you know I don’t rock with them like that but once you jump in that portal, bro, it’s going to be a bunch of Power Five schools coming after you.”

Jamal’s statement rang true as Kam sat in the office chair, attentive to every word.

“It’ll be tough,” he furrowed his brow into the monitor, “But it’s doable, just won’t be extensive visits if you want to keep that decision date.”

“Yes, sir,” Kam answered, resting his elbows on the arm rest.

“Just Mark is fine,” he waved him off, the framed jerseys and photos of past athletes behind him having their intended effect, “It’s going to be a bit of a whirlwind, so expect that. We can probably do Carolina first, I know they’re super excited about getting you on campus and they’re a situation we need to tend to with white gloves, you know, because they will have options. After that, we can knock out the Kentucky visit with a quick stop with Northwestern, if you’re still interested.”

“I’d like to go back to a city,” Kam remarked.

“You’ve got pretty good grades,” Mark examined his monitor, “But a Ball State B is different than a Northwestern B, you know? I’ll never push a kid away from a school because it’s too good of a school but being able to handle the course load is something to consider.”

“You still have Boston College,” Mark continued, “From our previous talk, you seemed a bit iffy about that one but if you want a city, play big time football, that’s probably your best option.”

The sour taste in Kam’s mouth hadn’t subdued but the idea of being in a major city enticed him, especially after coach O’Brien’s successful first year with the Eagles.

“Kam, I know this process can seem overwhelming,” his voice steady and reassuring. “But contracts are contracts. I understand the business side of things, having played college football myself and even trying out for an NFL team. I know what it takes to navigate these waters, and I was able to help Jamal land at Bergen and now at Louisville, with plenty of NIL deals and more on the way once he’s on the field. I’m not an agent, I’m not just a representative, I’m an advocate so as you go through this, don’t hesitate to reach out, keep in touch, let me know how you’re feeling, and I’ll keep fighting for you.”
