Season 4, Episode 13 (Season Finale)
The crisp winter air of New Year’s Day enveloped Montvale High School, where the anticipation was palpable. Kam stood at the edge of the gymnasium, his heart pounding in rhythm with the murmurs of the gathered crowd. This was his moment, the National Signing Day he never had, with the local press present to capture his decision. The banners of Montvale High hung proudly, a testament to the school’s legacy and Kam’s journey, even though it led him elsewhere.
“Kam, you should really let everyone know ahead of time where you’re picking,” Lana remarked, her tone laced with a mix of curiosity and impatience. The comment hung in the air, a challenge to Kam’s carefully guarded decision.
He wasn’t being coy; he truly was undecided and didn’t want to embarrass himself by backing out on his word.
Before Kam could respond, Yassy chimed in, “Let him do his thing. This is Kam’s moment, not ours,” she retorted, her voice steady and protective.
“I just don’t want us to look stupid when he announces,” Lana countered, annoyance in her voice.
“We’re rocking with him whichever way it goes,” Jamal stepped in, feeling the tense atmosphere since Yassy’s introduction to Lana, “Just don’t mess up the speech.”
Kam had felt the tension as well, but it’d need to be addressed later, if at all. He had experienced this with Lana before throughout their teenage years, the often uncomfortable introductions to the girls that Kam was seeing at the time, outlasting them all.
Taking a deep breath, Kam approached the podium, the weight of the moment pressing down on him. The gymnasium fell silent, all eyes fixed on him. He glanced at the front row, where a framed photograph of his parents and sister sat, a poignant reminder of their absence and their enduring presence in his life.
“Thank you all for being here today,” Kam began, his voice steady despite the whirlwind of emotions inside him. “I want to take a moment to honor my mom and stepfather, who are no longer with us but whose love and guidance have brought me to this point. Ana, I love you, baby girl.”
The room was hushed, the weight of Kam’s words settling over the audience. He took another deep breath, fixating his eyes on the words that were imprinted on the index card.
“As for my decision,” Kam continued, his voice growing stronger with each word, “I have thought long and hard about this, and I believe it’s the right choice for me and my future.”
He paused, the suspense hanging in the air like a held breath. The crowd leaned in, eager to hear his next words. Kam’s eyes scanned the room, taking in the faces of those who had supported him, doubted him, and everything in between.
“And so, I have decided to…”
