KADYN LEON POINTS TO THE CROWD AFTER SCORING A TOUCHDOWN

AUSTIN - With a 21-17 lead with under a minute left in the first half Lake Travis head coach Hank Carter wasn't satisfied with the idea of taking it easy and going to the locker room with a four point lead. Instead he sent out his offense with a sense of urgency, hoping to get the opportunity to add points before the break.

After completing a short pass to tight end Sam Self it was quarterback Cam Fitzpatrick pulling the ball down and taking off for a gain of 34 yards and a first down at the Vandergrift 38 yard line.

On the next play he found Self again for a 36 yard catch and run that set up Nico Hamilton to plunge in for a touchdown, giving Lake Travis a 28-17 lead at halftime.

HAMILTON FINDS A CLEAR PATH INTO THE ENDZONE

"It's not too often where me running with the ball is our best option." Fitzpatrick said after the game. "The guys around me are the real playmakers and it's just my job to get them the ball."

Fitzpatrick did that too, throwing for 285 yards and three scores. Nico Hamilton, who has had a light workload the past two weeks, carried the ball early and often, finishing the game with a season high 31 carries for 191 yards and a score. Top receivers were Kadyn Leon with four receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns and Sam Self who caught four passes for 103 yards. Dylan Cullers also chipped in a touchdown reception.

Vandergrift drew first blood when Charlie Reed connected on a 45 yard field goal late in the first quarter. Lake Travis took the lead just over a minute later with a 21 yard Fitzpatrick o Leon touchdown strike.

The second quarter was action packed with the team exchanging scores. First it was Lake Travis extending their lead with a Fitzpatrick to Cullers touchdown pass from just a yard out. Vandergrift answered when Deuce Adams connected with Jase Skoglund for a ten yard score. Fitzpatrick and Leon answered with a 50 yard scoring strike. Adams then found Miles Coleman from three yards out before Hamilton scored to make it 28-17 Lake Travis just before the break.

Things weren't quite as hectic in the second half with the first points coming on a 26 yard field goal by Braydon Doane midway through the third quarter, putting Lake Travis up 31-17.

Vandergrift would not be denied, scoring late in the fourth quarter when Deuce Adams found Eli Adams for an 18 yard touchdown. Lake Travis would be forced to punt late, giving the scrappy Vipers a chance. However, it was Tyler Mitchell busting through the Vandergrift line and dragging down Adams for a sack that ended the game.

Cam's just focused on Lake Travis right now. He will restart the recruiting process once the season is over.

Lucky Enough
November 12, 2023

"Y'all only won the one game up there?"

"Yeah bro. Shit was brutal. We beat Richwood but then we gave up fifty every game after. Well all except Tygart. Almost got them bitches."

"Shit's rough D..."

Dillon sighed then exhaled before addressing the orange elephant in the room. "So what the fuck happened with you and Texas. Why you switch on 'em?"

Cam let out an audible groan. He paused for a minute, remembering the rollercoaster he'd been through earlier in the year.
"I just felt like they weren't honest with me. Like they just said some shit they thought I wanted to hear. Felt like I was a contingency plan..."

"What the hell that mean?" Dillon interrupted.

"Like I was just there in case something else went wrong."

"Oh yeah. What they tell you?"

"Dude said Ewers was leaving, like for sure for sure. And he said they weren't looking to bring in anyone else."

"But you think Ewers will stay?"

"Nobody knows but a lot of people saying he will."

"Plus they got Peyton Manning's kid too?"

"Nephew but yeah. And they signed another QB. From out here."

"That's lame man. I see why you bounced on them."

"Yeah just felt like they intentionally lied. Like if they said they weren't sure about Ewers and said they were looking at other QBs then I may have stayed. But the lying got me."

"So where you looking at now?"

"I haven't been. There's letters and DMs and all but I haven't really talked to anyone and haven't answered. Just trying to see this season through then I'll do visits and shit and decide."

"Won't be much time if y'all keep on winning."

"Yeah it will be hectic but I'm just going to go with what feels right. Try to narrow it down quick and only take a few visits."

"Makes sense."

"What about you?"

"What you mean?"

"Where are you going to play?"

"Man. I ain't got shit going on. Not lucky enough to get the stage y'all got. We sucked so no scouts at our shit. Maybe Fairmont or Wesleyan or some shit. Maybe you could put in a word?" Dillon laughed after the question, knowing his future wasn't as bright as Cam's.

"I'll see what I can do." Cam replied, cracking a smile.

Dillon turned his attention elsewhere and nodded to someone.

"I gotta go Cam. Go get y'all a ring."

"Aight. Good talking D. Let's do it again."

Cam ended the FaceTime call and leaned back in his chair, glancing at the collection of recruitment letters.

"Lucky enough." He thought about Dillon's words.

He swiped open his phone and started scrolling through the DMs.

Someday
Autumn 2018

She leaned back in her chair closing her eyes for a moment as she took in the sounds of the game unfolding in front of her.

"Grier gets the ball and he drops back! The defense is coming for him fast."

"Stills is open!"

"Grier throws the ball to Stills just before he gets hit!"

She opened her eyes to watch the ball sail through the air, a tight spiral that was on target. The receiver tracked the ball over his shoulder and looked it into his hands, scampering into the endzone and spiking it with authority before being enthusiastically embraced by his quarterback.

"West Virginia wins the national championship! West Virginia wins the national championship!" They yelled at the top of their lungs.

She smiled and clapped for the boys as she turned her attention back to the mostly red spreadsheet on her laptop screen.

---

Cam and Dillon sat at the table barely able to stay still as they ate their sandwiches and discussed their future success on the football field together.

The two had become fast friends shortly after Cam moved in a few houses up the street. They shared many interests, at first it was monster trucks and super heroes now their primary focus was sports, especially all things West Virginia football.

"Mom?" Cam shouted to the other room.

"What?" She asked, still distracted by the laptop.

"How long until the game?"

"Umm... about an hour."

West Virginia had started their season with five straight wins. Enciting hope in all their fans, perhaps none moreso than Cam and Dillon. They had spent many of their fall Saturday afternoons together watching the game at each other's houses.

With a rare night game on the slate against Iowa State the duo had schemed up a full day of playing together followed by a viewing of the game and a sleepover.

---

"I still can't believe we lost." Cam said as he pouted and picked at his bowl of now soggy imitation fruity pebbles.

"Those other guys aren't even that good!" Dillon exclaimed.

"Mom, do you still think they can win the national championship this year?"

"Anything is possible but they would probably have to win the rest of their games."

Cam groaned.

"Well if they can't do it we will." Dillon said with the utmost confidence.

"Someday."
