Season 5, Episode 8
Kam leaned back in his chair, savoring the sun’s warmth on his face. The towering skyscrapers formed a tunnel, with the sun determined to break through. The city’s vibrant hum provided a backdrop to their conversation over an overpriced plate of eggs.

“I think they’ll understand your frustration,” she was delicate with every bite, neatly wiping away the corners of her mouth, “I think anybody would.”

“I fucking spazzed,” Kam scoffed, “I don’t know, it’ll be different if we like came up together or whatever but for some of those guys, I just got here, you know?”

“Well, maybe they needed to hear it from a new voice,” Yassy took a sip of her orange juice, “It’s not like you’re not one of the best players.”

“I guess,” he shrugged, the scenes from the sideline replaying in his mind.

He had been emerging as a vocal leader at Pascack, but since transferring to Howard Blake, he felt like a nomad—a talented player without a true locker room to call his own, having only been with a team for a few months at each of his last three stops. His vocal outbursts during the Georgia game were mild compared to others he had witnessed, but they lingered in his mind, cluttering his thoughts.

“How’s, huh…” Kam wanted to change the subject, shifting the focus from his life to Yassy’s but struggled to find a connection, “How’s living with Tess, it’s just y’all two, right?”

Kam knew the answer, and she knew that he knew, but she still appreciated his efforts. “Yup, just us two girlies.”

“I know your ass can’t cook, can Tess?”

“I’ve been improving,” she contested with a smile, “Tess knows how to cook but whenever it’s her turn, she’ll just order takeout or something, which I ain’t complaining. Although you might be in a couple months because freshman fifteen don’t got nothing on this sophomore twenty I’m working on right now.”

“You look good,” Kam assured her, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Yassy blushed, partially heeding Tess’ advice and opting for a more figure-hugging bodysuit under her coat, letting it rest on her shoulders to reveal the fitted bustline.

“I feel like we talk all the time,” Yassy started after a brief pause, “But how are you doing? Like just besides football and everything.”

Kam opened his mouth, ready to regurgitate a canned answer but he stopped for a moment, collecting his thoughts, “I’m like happy and shit about where I’m at but because I feel like so close to having everything I want, it’s also a bit frustrating, you know?”

“Like with everything,” Kam sighed, “I mean, I know you said outside of football and shit, but I mean, I’m doing good there but I’m not doing good, you know? I still feel like I got a whole another level I can tap into and really start going off, but I feel like until the team gets better around me, I’m kind of stuck. And then there’s my pops and shit, we get along fine enough, he’ll Facetime me or whatever but is there much there? Whenever we do chop it up, it’s great but when something going on or I have an issue, I still don’t really think to hit him up and get his opinion on shit when I feel like I should, but I just don’t.”

Yassy remained attentive, her eyes fixated on his, exploring the world she often wondered about.

“Even with us, I feel like I’m really happy with where we’re at and I hope you are too but it’s like damn, if only I got to see you more on some everyday type shit, just hanging out and stuff.”

“Are you still happy with long distance?” she inquired, trying to hide the worry in her voice.

“I’d rather do long distance with you than anything else with anybody else,” he answered candidly, “What about you?”

“It’s definitely hard,” she replied, “I’d like to see you more, obviously, but I also think in a way it’s like strengthening the bond that we have because it’s not like convenient or anything. I’m not going to lie, when we first like started seeing each other, you were just cute and laid back and I was just like ‘Yassy, he ain’t crazy, he’s fine, he’s black, snatch him up’ but like I never really thought much more of our shit until we really started doing this shit where I might not see you for weeks and I still feel strongly about you.”

Kam had his fair share of run-ins with the opposite sex, fairing relatively well in that department given all of his advantages, both physically and in social stature as an athlete, but not since elementary had he ever heard a girl profess her strong feelings like this to him.

The only girl that even came close would soon come out of Yassy’s mouth.

“I don’t want to like ruin this moment,” Yassy awkwardly laughed, “I just can’t stop shaking it since you mentioned that she recommended this spot.”

Kam braced himself, taking a deep breath.

“What’s up with you and that girl, Lana?”

“What do you mean?”

“Come on, Kam,” she scoffed, “I’m not blind, I could tell shit was awkward when I met her. She could barely look at me and when she did, she would like stare and shit.”

“I don’t know about that,” Kam tried to downplay it.

“And then today, I asked you how you found out about this place, and you said it was from a friend,” she continued, “I had to basically pry it out of you on which friend it was when you could have just said it was from her.”

“What are you asking me, really?”

“She’s a pretty girl,” Yassy shrugged, turning head away with a coy smile, “I’m just saying, I would understand.”

“We’re friends,” Kam began, “When we were in high school, we fooled around and stuff but nothing serious, not like we were ever together.”

“Why not?”

Kam paused, the answer far more complex than he wished to delve into, “I don’t know if I could ever date her, and I don’t know if she could ever date me.”

“But you guys, have, right?”

“Have what?”

“Don’t make me say it,” Yassy held her hands to her mouth, “I feel like a schoolgirl asking these questions.”

“We’ve hooked up,” he answered honestly, “Like, all the way.”

“Was it good?”

“Come on,” Kam laughed, seeing the smile on Yassy’s face, enjoying the agony she was putting him through, “We were kids, like, almost literally kids.”

“Does she have a boyfriend?” she brought her cup to her mouth, more as a method for hiding her smile.

“I don’t know,” he shrugged, “We don’t really talk that much anymore, just the occasional check-in.”

“I’m just messing with you,” she relented, “I could tell the minute I walked into that room there was weird energy there and nine times out of ten, it’s only for one reason.”

“We’re way past that,” Kam tried to tell her.

“She fumbled,” Yassy shrugged, cheekily taking a sip from her drink, “She ain’t getting her nigga back.”

Kyrie did a final lookover of the apartment, making sure that everything was stowed away properly. He had sent Rasheem and Marlon on their way, bribing them with a few bucks as soon as he had received the text from Ashley.

The private rooms allowed for moments of intimacy, but Kyrie now had the full apartment to his disposal, free to experiment wherever he might please.

The knock on the door expedited his process, hurrying himself to the door.

“Who is she?”

He took a few steps back, squinting his eyes as the phone remained steadied towards his face, trying to decipher between the social media handle and the picture who he was being shown.

“I don’t know,” he stammered, Ashley continuing to close the distance as she backed him into the couch.

He went to grab the phone, but she pulled it away, scrolling to find another picture, “How about now?”

She looked familiar but so did a lot of girls to Kyrie.

“I don’t know that girl,” Kyrie finally replied forcibly, “What are you coming in here like that for?”

“You know, I don’t even care about all the shit you did last year but this, really, Kyrie?”

“I didn’t do shit!” he contested, “You just come in here like that, accusing me and shit and I don’t even know what you saying I did.”

Ashley tried to calm herself down, closing her eyes, “They showed me the fucking DM, Kyrie. You weren’t even fucking smart enough to unsend it, you fucking dumbass.”

“Hold on,” he was now on the offensive, “You coming to me about a fucking message?”

“If you make me pull up the screenshot, I’m going to smack the shit out of you,” she put her finger in his face, “I was cool with you fucking those high school bitches but my teammate?”

“I don’t know what the girl told you,” Kyrie was unwavering, “But I ain’t never seen that girl, touched that girl.”

“You DM’d her last year, while I was in Austin,” she explained, “She even fucking showed it to me, Kyrie, so unless you were hacked, find a new fucking lie.”

“Man, that shit don’t mean nothing,” he went to grab her hand, but she pulled away, “Babe, you really upset over a fucking message? If I did even send it, clearly it didn’t mean shit, I don’t even fucking remember it.”

“I’ve given you a lot of grace,” she warned him, “Don’t make me look fucking stupid, that’s the only thing I ever fucking asked of you. I’ll make us look like fucking Booboo the Clown; you understand?”

Kam’s endorsement money had been well spent. As he gazed out from his hotel window, the city below was a tapestry of car lights and tiny, ant-like people. He took a sip of his stiff drink, savoring the moment.

“I could definitely get used to this,” she wrapped her arm around his waist, resting her head on his back.

“You’re not worried about CTE anymore, huh?” Kam teased, also enjoying the moment.

“We can live like this doing other things,” she reasoned, “Not that there’s any money in helping at-risk kids but I’m sure your communications degree goes a long way.”

“You keep talking shit,” Kam playfully shook his head, “But that motherfucking major keeping a nigga more than eligible, three-point-six and shit.”

“I can always sell some feet pics,” she sarcastically suggested, “I’ve been told I have pretty toes.”

“You sure do,” Kam turned around to face her, leaning over to give her a passionate kiss. He continued to guide her until they reached the end of the bed, placing his hand on her back as he laid her down.

“Kam,” she moaned as he kissed her neck, working his way down her body, “Kam.”

He continued, making his way down to her nether regions.

“Kam,” she was more forceful, “Not tonight.”

“Come on,” he moved his way back up, kissing on her bosom and neck, “I want you to experience this with me.”

“I just,” she tilted her head back, staring at the ceiling, “I know I said that eventually I’ll be ready…I just don’t know anymore.”

“What?” Kam scoffed, his mood souring, “What do you mean you don’t know?”

“I…”

“I don’t want to like force you to do anything,” he backed away from her, “But like at some point, is this just…not going to happen?”

“I don’t…”

“I deserve to know,” he tried to hide his frustration to no avail.

“I don’t know, Kam.”

We need to start a dialogue on why Kamaldeen Seidu-Harris doesn’t show up until the fourth quarter of games.
