State of the Blue Jay: Can this team get over the hump in air-tight AL East?

If you were to ask what the Toronto Blue Jays’ main issue would be at the beginning of the season, most would point towards their inconsistent stars not showing up to the batters’ box. That has not been the issue. First baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and outfielder George Springer - despite slow starts to the season that drew sizable amounts of concern - are just behind the league leaders in home runs and RBIs and both are on pace for career years.

Shortstop Bo Bichette had one of the hottest March/Aprils in recent Blue Jays history and continues his march towards an All-Star caliber season despite missing a little time with an injury. Catcher Danny Jansen has bounced incumbent young gun Alejandro Kirk out of his starting position with his red-hot bat and outfielder and resident designated hitter Davis Schneider currently leads MLB in batting average and hits while not venturing too far back in home runs as well.

No, the problem is on the other side of the game. Their defense leaves much to be desired and superstar Kevin Gausman has fallen off hard. Despite leading the American League in strikeouts, Gausman has been shelled and kicked out of the game early in many of his recent starts, and it seems as though Alek Manoah (despite his obvious struggles last year) is the only starting pitcher that has been above-average lately.

The Blue Jays’ bullpen has been lacklustre as well with even standout Yimi Garcia getting blown up a few times as well. The team is hoping that the return of Trevor Richards after being out for a few months with an injury will strengthen their reserves but with the trade deadline just over the horizon, the expectation is that the Blue Jays are at a crossroads.

The Blue Jays sit 6.5 games back from the Boston Red Sox-led AL East crown, as well as 1.5 games back from the AL Wild Card in the tightest division in the MLB right now. With the Baltimore Orioles falling off the map in the last six weeks, it seems it will be a four-team race for the crown.

Here are the Blue Jays’ options going forth:

Add to what is already working: More Firepower
The Toronto Blue Jays are a top-five offensive team led by Guerrero Jr., Springer, Schneider, and Bichette (not to mention the outstanding season being had by the likes of Daulton Varsho and Danny Jansen). Could there be more room to add a few more bats? Anthony Santander of the Baltimore Orioles seems to be the biggest fish of the trade deadline if the Orioles want to shake things up. Luis Robert Jr. seems to be a possible piece coming from the lowly Chicago White Sox. If the Miami Marlins decide the NL Wild Card race is a fool's errand, budding star Jazz Chisholm Jr. might be on the Blue Jays’ radar. Do we even question what might happen if the San Diego Padres decide enough is enough and part with one of their key pieces?

Rely on what we already have: Call up Ricky Tiedemann and hope the rotation catches up
The Toronto Blue Jays’ number one prospect, pitcher Ricky Tiedemann has been waiting patiently in AAA ball as many MLB pundits have forecasted his arrival date to be sometime this season. With the likes of Chris Bassitt and Yusei Kikuchi struggling as of late (with the latter’s contract expiring at the end of the year and his resigning not a foregone conclusion), it could be worth shaking up the rotation without having to shell out key pieces on the roster. Plus the pitcher's market isn’t exactly glowing (Blake Snell of the San Franciso Giants just signed there and despite their clear struggles, it remains to be seen if they plan on shopping him around).

Blow it up: Too many expiring contracts and no clear road to a deep playoff road means try again

Amongst others that hold big roles with the Toronto Blue Jays at the moment. There is also no guarantee that Bo Bichette will sign a big deal with the team if they lose out on the aforementioned players. This core has only left the city of Toronto disappointed and heartbroken after key playoff losses and unfortunate end-of-season results.

Maybe it's time to call a spade a spade.

What might happen?
The Toronto Blue Jays have led the AL East on several instances this season and have won or split a series against the Yankees, Red Sox, and the Rays this season. They can win and all the players still have optimism they can turn things around and get back to their dominating ways. The bats are doing their job and Guerrero Jr. is on pace for one of his best seasons and is getting even stronger every week.

The team is keen on adding to their roster without breaking the bank and is most likely bringing Guerrero Jr. back on his big-boy deal soon. What will help the two sides mediate their expectations the most?
