‣ CFB 2024 Regular Season, Week 2 - Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida
(FCS) Florida A&M Rattlers at #23 Miami Hurricanes (1-0, 0-0 ACC)
FAMU | 3 | 0 | 7 | 0 | 10
MIA | 14 | 28 | 0 | 24 | 66

Touchdown galore in Miami's 66-10 win over Florida A&M
Miami quarterback Cam Ward's first two passes of the night were incomplete, creating a nervous energy within rainy Hard Rock Stadium as Canes fans hadn't seen the offense they anticipated even in the win over the Florida Gators' last week.
Ward would put those worries to rest soon after, completing twelve of his next thirteen passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns, only playing four drives in Miami's 66-10 win over Florida A&M on Saturday in their home opener.
As expected, it was complete domination for Miami with all four quarterbacks getting in the game as Reese Poffenbarger completed all six of his passes in his Miami debut with two being touchdowns. Emory Williams was the lone quarterback to not throw a touchdown as Judd Anderson completed 12 of 15 for 99 yards and three touchdowns in his college debut.
Anderson was among thirteen true freshman that got in the game with Jordan Lyle rushing for 38 yards, Josiah Trader scoring his first career touchdown while Justin Scott, Artavious Jones and Marrquise Lightfoot all recorded their first sack. Booker Pickett Jr, who will likely redshirt as he tries to transform his body from a 200-pound edge rusher, also was disruptive on the edge.
There were some takeaways as the competition from the spring and fall camp at left guard appears to have bled into the season with Matthew McCoy alternating series with former five-star Samson Okunlola. McCoy got the start against Florida last week and played the entire game, posting a team low 49.6 grade according to PFF. Once the rest of the starters were removed, McCoy remained at left guard while Okunlola moved to right tackle for the rest of the game.

Miami OL coach Alex Mirabal confirms that former five-star Samson Okunlola will start against Ball State
Gabriel Lake -- 247 Sports Miami Insider
Miami Hurricanes offensive line coach Alex Mirabal, also notably Mario Cristobal's right hand man, met with the media on Wednesday and confirmed earlier reports that Samson Okunlola will be starting at left guard in place of Matthew McCoy in the Hurricanes' third game of the season against Ball State.
"We're really happy with how Samson [Okunlola] is progressing, really all of our guys," said Mirabal on Wednesday when asked about Okunlola rotating with the first team on last Saturday's game against Florida A&M, "He'll get a chance to start on Saturday and we'll mix in [Matthew McCoy] and go from there but we're really comfortable with our top guys and their ability to get in there and produce at a high level."
The announcement came as a bit of a surprise as the Hurricanes have been notoriously secretive under Cristobal, not allowing much access to practices and not revealing much to the media when it comes to injury updates, positional battles and the overall state of the team.
McCoy started for Miami against Florida and struggled in the game against the Gators, posting the lowest grade along the offensive line. Both players graded well against Florida A&M, as expected, with a step up in competition this week against Ball State before their final non-conference game of the year when they travel to Tampa to play the Bulls in what will be their first real test since their 17-14 win over Florida in the opener.
Some other news from the coaches availability on Wednesday:
Sophomore running back Mark Fletcher is a full go
Fletcher was still fully recovering from a foot injury when he carried the ball eight times for twelve yards against the Florida Gators with running back coach Matt Merritt describing Fletcher as being healthy physical wise in that game but not so mentally.
"I think whenever you're coming back from surgery, there's a bit of hesitancy," Merritt explained, "Mark [Fletcher] looks like Mark again on a consistent basis and I think he's running like we want him to run and I think he's building that confidence and unfortunately, you never know until it's live so two games in, he's a full go."
Fletcher had five carries for 35 yards, catching two passes before being shut down in the first half against Florida A&M. Miami's staff must have seen enough to feel confident that Fletcher, who was second on the team in rushing yards last year, is back to his old self.
Ajay Allen and Jordan Lyle had some nice runs against the Rattlers but there's a clear drop off after Damien Martinez and Fletcher in terms of ability to be a feature running back in the ACC. A name to watch, should Fletcher continue to struggle to come back from his injury, is Chris Johnson Jr.
Johnson is a nice change up to Fletcher and Martinez, who are bigger bodies. Johnson rushed for 24 yards on four carries and caught three passes, all off touch passes, and scored on all of them. He's reputed to be the fastest player on the team and against Florida, there was a real lack of explosive plays which Johnson should help with.
True freshman Justin Scott making it harder to keep him off the field
Yes, it was against Florida A&M but the talent jumps off the film with five-star defensive tackle Justin Scott. Scott had two tackles for loss and two sacks against the Rattlers on 33 snaps after not playing in the opener against Florida.
Expect a deeper rotation as the Canes get ready for ACC play as Scott is just the latest to join a long list of defensive linemen that could have an impact this season.
Reuben Bain and Simeon Barrow Jr. are the headliners but it's a deep rotation for the Canes that also include Elijah Alston, Marley Cook, Akheem Mesidor, Tyler Baron and C.J. Clark. That's before you even get into the Ahmad Moten's, Cole McConathy's and Armando Blount's who the staff are extremely high on and are looking to get on the field at some point this year.
