Bye Week Report: The State of the Patriots
New England heads into the bye week with a 5-8 record, bottom of the AFC East and coming off two straight losses to stop all the momentum they had gained with winning four of their previous five games since switching to Drake Maye at quarterback.

They also come out of the bye with favorable matchups against the Cardinals on the road in a dome and then at home against the Chargers sandwiched between their two divisional games against the Buffalo Bills.

They'll get to learn a lot about Maye in the coming weeks with his first career night game against the Chargers and a true road test in a hostile environment when they take on Buffalo.

Best player through weeks 1-13:
He's had a few tough games the past few weeks but Rhamondre Stevenson is still New England's offensive MVP and leads the NFL in rushing heading into the bye. He'll likely lose that title after this week once other players that have only played twelve games catch up with him in terms of games played but on a yards per game basis, he's still second in the NFL despite playing behind the worst offensive line in football.

Defensively, New England has to be excited about how Christian Gonzalez has responded from his season ending injury during his rookie year. Gonzalez, whose physicality was a concern coming out of Oregon, is fourth on the team in tackles and leads the Patriots with three interceptions and fifteen pass breakups. He's been excellent in matchups against some of the NFL's elites, including D.K. Metcalf and Tyreek Hill. He'll have another highly anticipated matchup next week when they take on the Cardinals and Marvin Harrison Jr.

Worst player through weeks 1-13:
The offensive line as a whole might be the expected answer here but they've been pretty solid, especially in the running game. A surprise answer might be Austin Hooper, the backup tight end who has seen his role diminish over the past few weeks and with good reason.

He was consistently logging at least twenty five snaps through the first nine games of the year with just two catches for ten yards to show for it. The Patriots have started to play rookie Jaheim Bell over him lately, who scored a touchdown last week.

Most Impressive game so far:
W 38-0 vs. Los Angeles Rams

The Rams were super injured, including without quarterback Matthew Stafford, but a shutout in the NFL is always impressive, no matter the context. Maye also showed the ability to put together drives even when he wasn't at his best, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another.

Least Impressive game so far:
L 26-10 vs. Houston Texans

The game that ultimately ended Jacoby Brissett's time as the starter. He averaged just 6.1 yards per attempt before being pulled for Drake Maye who threw a touchdown pass and made the score respectable for the Patriots

Contract negotiations at this point:
There's still some football left to be played but there’s some important players headed to free agency for 2025:

EDGE Josh Uche - Uche's production without Matthew Judon is very telling but even with the dip, he's a talented pass rusher who has value. He's improved in the run game and has already surpassed his sack total from last year with 4.5 on the season. If he takes a discount, like he did last year, a reunion is possible.

CB Jonathan Jones - Jones is a very solid CB2 but ideally, he would be in the nickel and slotted up against smaller, shiftier receivers instead of being asked to be a boundary corner. The problem is that Jones is what Marcus Jones projects to be in the near future. For New England to improve on defense, it might take getting a true outside corner opposite of Gonzalez and moving on from the older Jones' and allowing Marcus to develop into that role.

C David Andrews - It's hard to imagine New England with a different center but he's 32 and his best football is likely behind him. The free agent market at center is a bit unclear right now so Andrews probably returns to New England on a one-year deal

DE Deatrich Wise Jr - A common theme here with another veteran who is playing well but if the team is to improve, they can't just bring back the same guys. Wise is still a very solid player but the Patriots could afford to improve at the position and get some more 'juice' from that spot

K Joey Slye - He's been fine with three field goal misses and missing two extra points
