Jahan Dotson burns rookie Daylen Everette for late touchdown in Eagles win over Patriots
New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo have plenty to work on, build on and praise on following the Patriots' 31-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the preseason opener.

The Patriots' had a chance to give their offense one more opportunity at tying the game on third and seven but Jahan Dotson got behind rookie cornerback Daylen Everette for the 77-yard touchdown in what was a definite 'Welcome to the NFL' moment for the second round pick.

Drake Maye played in two series, his fourth down pass at the goal line falling incomplete in his final play of the day as the first team offense went scoreless. He completed seven of his thirteen pass attempts for 59 yards. He was replaced by second year quarterback Joe Milton III who threw a pick six but rebounded well to finish with 152 passing yards and a touchdown pass.

The rookies make their opening statement
Outside of the aforementioned coverage blip by Everette, it was a pretty solid day in coverage for him and a good debut for several rookies.

Barion Brown had an early connection with Maye on a third down conversion during the first drive and ended the game with four catches for 46 yards. Xavier Restrepo caught a 40-yard touchdown before the end of the first half and Oscar Delp was open on pretty much every route he can, catching four of them for 34 yards. Oronde Gadsden, who lined up primarily at tight end, caught three passes for 23 yards. Undrafted free agent Keandre Lambert-Smith was dynamite in the return game with a 97-yard touchdown and averaged nearly thirty yards on his other returns.

It was a really strong showing from running back Kyle Monangai who rushed for 88 yards on seventeen carries with 42 of those coming after contact.

The offensive line depth is still a concern
Will Campbell's debut was uneventful, which is what you're looking for in an offensive tackle. Mike Onwenu surrendered a sack and Sidy Sowe had two holding calls which were the negatives from the first team offensive line.

Once the backups got in, however, it was evident. Monangai had to do a lot of work and when he did manage to spring open a run, five of them were called back for holding, including two on Vederien Lowe and two on rookie Marcus Tate.

Lowe also surrendered two sacks, including a strip of Milton that he was able to recover.

Interesting day for the linebackers
Ja'Whaun Bentley, a captain and starter from last year, played 42 snaps and was on the field well into the second half. By comparison, Chase Young only played nine snaps, Christian Barmore played eleven and Christian Gonzalez played thirteen.

Bentley's presence on the field was noticeable as maybe the Patriots are just trying to get him back into shape and rhythm after missing most of last year with an injury but it was certainly of note to see such a veteran player play so much in a preseason opener with a bunch of backups.

One of those backups was Curtis Jacobs who surrendered an early touchdown in coverage but bounced back well, leading the team with ten tackles and two tackles for loss. Free agent acquisition Tyrel Dodson wore the green dot when he was on the field -- another interesting note -- instead of Bentley and had five tackles in just eighteen snaps.

Injury News
Center Drew Dalman and linebacker Jahlani Tavai did not suit as they got injury designation from injuries picked up from the week's practice. Tavai was out with a shoulder injury while Dalman's knee injury was described as minor by Mayo.

Defensive tackle Eddie Goldman left the game with an apparent upper body injury and did not return. It was a clean game otherwise outside of a few minor injuries that players left with and eventually came back into the game.

Saints first round pick Ashton Jeanty runs loose against Patriots in breakout performance
Many questioned New Orleans' decision to draft Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty in the first round but two games into his preseason career, it's easy to see why the Saints were so high on the former Heisman finalist.

Jeanty rushed for 88 yards and a 43-yard rushing touchdown and a 20-yard receiving touchdown in the Saints 31-19 win over the New England Patriots on Friday.

It was a tough first half for New England's defense who surrendered twenty-one points for the Saints' first team offense. Derek Carr went 14 of 122 for 125 yards with two touchdowns, the other going to Rashid Shaheed who beat Christian Gonzalez in coverage.

Drake Maye played two series, going 5 of 7 for 35 yards. He led a touchdown drive that ended with an Antonio Gibson touchdown run.

The backup quarterbacks don't look the greatest
Marcus Mariota replaced Maye and got the luxury of playing with New England's starting offensive line and yet went 6 of 20 for 56 yards with plenty of missed throws, misfires and poor decision from the ten-year veteran.

Joe Milton III wasn't much better, throwing an interception when the Patriots had a chance to cut into the lead in the fourth quarter to make it a close finish. Milton completed only 46 percent of his throws for 47 yards with most of his completions being screen passes.

Kyle Monangai bounces back from fumble
After being one of the bright spots from the preseason opener, undrafted free agent running back Kyle Monangai fumbled on one of his first carries and was replaced by R.J. Harvey for the next two series.

Monangai would return and have another strong outing, carrying the ball eight times for 42 yards and catching seven passes for 29 yards. He's a smooth runner with a good vision and the ability to push the pile. He's began to separate himself from the pack and is working towards not only a roster spot but perhaps even a limited role in the offense as a rookie.

Injury News
Several players left the game with an injury with the most notable being starting left guard Sidy Sow. Sow was called for a few holding penalties and was having a tough day before his day got worse when he left the game with an arm injury. It's unclear of the severity.

Linebacker Sione Takitaki left the game with an elbow injury, running back R.J. Harvey suffered an apparent upper body injury as did defensive lineman Jarran Reed. Reed did return to the sidelines, in uniform but did not get into the game.

Training Camp Confidential: Six players to keep an eye on during preseason finale
The Patriots wrap up training camp this week before hosting the Los Angeles Rams in the final game of the preseason where head coach Jerod Mayo says he and the coaching staff will try their best to mimic the flow of a regular season game.

With that being said, expect to see some extensive work on Saturday for not only established starters but a lot of the young guys and veterans that are competing for a major role within the team for the upcoming season as they get ready to kick off the season against the Miami Dolphins in two weeks. Here are a few guys to keep your eyes on:

WR Kayshon Boutte
Even if you consider Oronde Gadsden II a tight end, which is where he's exclusively played in the games despite practicing with the receivers as well, New England still has eight receivers on their roster and will at the most carry six come the regular season.

Demario Douglas, Barion Brown and Ja'Lynn Polk are projected starters with third round pick Xavier Restrepo almost guaranteed a roster spot given his draft position. Tyquan Thornton has found the endzone this preseason and so has undrafted free agent Keandre Lambert-Smith who might be the Patriots' best return specialist.

Where does that leave the likes of Javon Baker and Kayshon Boutte? Boutte was a sixth round pick compared to Baker, who was drafted in the fourth round last year, and chances are, only one of them make the active roster. None of them have really done much this preseason with each player having just one catch this preseason despite the high snap count for both.

Boutte will need to show something this weekend to prove that he's deserving of a spot on the final 53.

CB Marcellas Dial
New England carried four corners on their roster last year and right now, Marcellas Dial is on the chopping block along with Christian Holmes.

Dial has been solid as a special teams guy and has shown some improvement in coverage as well. If he's going to make the roster, however, he'll need to show that not only is he New England's fifth best corner over Holmes but that he's worth carrying on the active roster now that he's been replaced by second round pick Daylen Everette on the depth chart.

Dial and the second unit will get to go against a former Patriot in Jacoby Brissett who is Matthew Stafford's backup in Los Angeles.

TE/WR Oronde Gadsden II
One of the standouts from camp, Orondo Gadsden II has been really impressive with his speed and fluidity at the tight end position. He caught three passes in the opener before playing a lesser role against the Saints where it was Jaheim Bell that played the most snaps at tight end.

As a receiver, we know Gadsden is talented but New England already has pass catchers in starter Hunter Henry and rookie Oscar Delp so Gadsden will need to showcase his physicality and run blocking ability if he's going to make the Patriots carry him over Bell or in addition to Bell because they have another tight-end type on the roster in fullback Patrick Ricard.

LT Will Campbell
A different type of name to watch as not only is first round pick Will Campbell obviously going to make the roster, he's going to be the team's starting left tackle this year.

He's been quiet, in a good way, outside of an early penalty in the opener. He'll have some exciting matchups this week against the Rams in Byron Young, Jared Verse, Braden Fiske and Kobie Turner who all are different body types and have a different array of moves and techniques in their arsenal.

This should be a good test for Campbell as he'll be seeing Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb of the Dolphins in a few weeks.

EDGE Chase Young
There will be plenty of opportunities throughout the season for Chase Young to justify his $20.7 million cap hit but just one tackle through two preseason games isn't exactly putting those doubters of Young's mega deal to rest.

Young played extended snaps against the Saints and only registered one quarterback hurry and was in coverage against Ashton Jeanty for one of the rookie's touchdown where he broke away from Young and got into the endzone.

He's an impressive looking athlete and you can tell that the talent is there but it will still be some good juju if he's able to get a sack or a bevvy of pressures in the final game of the preseason to get his season rolling.

G Layden Robinson
Sidy Sow could end up missing the season opener with an injury and with his poor play, he might have been in danger of getting replaced anyway.

Robinson started several games last year at right guard so the transition to left guard should be smooth one for him, although New England might opt to put Brandon Scherff there instead in order to pair the veteran with a rookie left tackle.

Either way, this is a big opportunity for Robinson to not only win that starting job for now but potentially even when Sow is healthy again.
