Drake Maye puts on the 'Superman' cape in homecoming win over Panthers
Drake Maye's return to Charlotte had all of the makings of a disaster. By halftime, the New England Patriots were without top receiver Cooper Kupp, their top two running backs in Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson and were down one of their more proven lineman in Brandon Scherff.

In a gritty performance against his childhood team, Maye threw two fourth quarter touchdowns in the final six minutes of the game to beat the Carolina Panthers 26-13 on Sunday.

New England took the 12-9 lead in the third quarter thanks to Andre Borregales' third and fourth field goal of the day, all coming in the third quarter. Carolina had a chance to retake the lead following a seven-yard scramble by Bryce Young on third and goal to get the ball to the one-yard line but the Panthers opted to kick a field goal instead of going for it.

It would prove to be a costly decision as Maye picked up a first down with an eleven-yard scramble and then later in that drive, found Xavier Restrepo for the twelve yard pickup to get the ball in the red zone. Faced with third and one, the Panthers would send pressure only for Maye to find the wide open Kyle Monangai for the touchdown.

Maye finished the game with 180 yards passing and 112 yards rushing, leading the team in both.

Carolina's offense would go four-and-out on the next series, turning the ball over on downs on an incompletion to former Patriots tight end Austin Hooper. Maye scrambled for eighteen yards on the ensuing play and then found Hunter Henry for fourteen yards and then Javon Baker for the 28-yard touchdown to put the game away.

New England places running back Antonio Gibson on IR as Jerod Mayo discusses lengthy injury report
The New England Patriots have placed running back Antonio Gibson on injured reserve, effectively ending his season and have activated running back R.J. Harvey to the active roster.

Gibson, 27, dislocated his ankle in the win last week over the Carolina Panthers. Prior to his injury, Gibson was averaging 52 yards per game on a career high 5.6 yards per carry and was on pace to have his best season as a pass catcher out of the backfield with 34 receptions for 303 yards and two touchdowns.

Gibson is one of three new players on the Patriots' injury report as they'll be without receiver Cooper Kupp (abdomen), guard Brandon Scherff (shoulder) and rotational interior defensive linemen Jarran Reed (elbow).

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said on Wednesday that the injuries are all week to week and that he was optimistic to have them back at some point during the regular season. Kupp's injury is a significant one as no other Patriot receiver has more than 21 receptions while Kupp leads the team with 49.

Second round pick Barion Brown, who has missed four games this season due to injuries, figures to have an expanded role with Kupp's absence. Brown is averaging 26 yards per game on the year with a team high 16.9 yards per reception.

Defense optional as Patriots rally falls short against Bengals
The most improbable victory of Drake Maye's young career was on the precipice of happening but Quinshon Judkins had other ideas, breaking through Jabril Peppers' tackle to retake the lead with less than two minutes left.

Maye's magic would run out, turning the ball over on downs as the Cincinnati Bengals hung on to a 48-38 win to keep the AFC's top seed in play for the Bengals.

New England trailed by seventeen points heading into halftime but would tie the game early in the fourth quarter after two touchdowns from Maye to Demario Douglas to tie it up at 31 apiece. On the very next drive, however, a coverage bust would result in Jermaine Burton being left wide open for an 83-yard score.

Patriots coach Jerod Mayo was hyper critical of his defense who surrendered 450 passing yards to Joe Burrow and Co.

"Just bad football out there," Mayo said, "No excuse for it. Got out schemed as a coaching staff, got outplayed as a unit. We just didn't show up, really."

Following an exchange of punts, one of the few in the game, Rhamondre Stevenson and Maye would lead the Patriots down the field before Maye found Bario Brown for the game tying touchdown with four minutes left.

Even after surrendering a 27-yard completion to Ja'Marr Chase, New England had a chance to force Cincinnati to settle for a field goal but Peppers, one of the Patriots' most reliable players, would miss a tackle in the backfield that led to a nine-yard touchdown by Judkins.

Maye would throw three straight incompletions on the next drive to turn the ball over on New England's own 35-yard line.
