yeah next season might be tough... someone will have to step up with prillman leaving

Prillman has like a 94 3pt rating and bails me out on busted plays when im usering a lot. the problem with this team is he's the best/most experienced option we have at point guard but he actually has the worst handling on the team, along with the worst passing among guards lol.

choops tends to favor bigs im excited about iversen -- samuels is pretty fun to play with already too. if we do well enough this season it will give me some pretty interesting offers in the offseason, but it may be more fun to just stay at sac state and build around iversen.

Prillman and Hornets hope to snap 2 game losing skid against Lumberjacks in Big Sky Conference Tournament opener

After finishing with 8 wins and 8 losses in Big Sky tournament play, Brian Katz has managed to sneak the Sacramento State Hornets into the Big Sky Tournament for a second year in a row. The Hornets finished the regular season ranked fifth in the Big Sky and 16-11 overall.

The Hornets will undoubtedly depend on the Big Sky scoring leader G Anand Prillman to help shake up the Big Sky tournament. A senior, Prillman will enter each game as if it's his last, which could likely lead to memorable performances.

The Hornets will face off against the North Arizona University Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks are currently 9-7 in Big Sky play, but currently have a losing record of 11-16 overall. The Hornets and Lumberjacks two meetings have been two of the more memorable Big Sky faceoffs this season. The Lumberjacks were able to escape the Hornets by one basket in each meeting, so the Hornets will have a chip on their shoulder headed into this match-up.

The match up between Freshmen Centers Cam Aguilar and Josh Iversen will be a match up to watch for the next several seasons, and this game will be yet another important chapter in their inter-conference rivalry.

The winner of this match up will go on to face off with the Weber State Wildcats, who are now the reigning Big Sky Regular Season Champions. On the opposite side of the Big Sky bracket, sixth ranked Montana State Bobcats face off with the third ranked Idaho State Bengals. The winner of that match up will face off in the Big Sky Semifinals against the second ranked Montana Grizzlies.

Sacramento State Hornets 2008-2009 Season Recap

In head coach Brian Katz's second season, the Sacramento State Hornets experienced what was overall a disappointing year, barely scraping into and quickly being bounced out of the Big Sky tournament. However, the season was highlighted by standout individual performances that offered excitement and glimpses of a brighter future for the program.

Senior G Anand Prillman was the star of the team and conference, earning Big Sky Conference Player of the Year honors thanks to his elite outside shooting. Prillman led the conference in scoring and was known for his consistency behind the arc, even if he had occasional off nights. His impact as the best 3-point shooter Katz, Sacramento State, and the Big Sky have seen in years will be sorely missed as he continues his playing career overseas.

Another key takeaway was the impressive debut of freshman center Josh Iversen, who made a significant impact on and off the court for the Hornets. Spawning strong arguments of being overlooked for postseason honors, Iversen's performance was crucial to the Hornets' efforts, and he is expected to take on an even larger role to help fill the void left by Prillman's departure next season. Iversen could quickly be the leader this team needs to see improved results next season

Additionally, junior F Dazzmon Winkfield earned a spot on the All-Big Sky first team alongside Prillman, solidifying his position as a key player for the Hornets. With Winkfield returning next season, Katz will rely on both him and Iversen to step up and help the team navigate a critical year ahead. Much like the recruiting class that brought in players like Iversen and others like Josiah Samuels and Rodolfo Alloway, Katz anticipates bringing in what will be one of the more notably talented recruiting intakes in recent years.

National Signing Day: Katz secures five LOIs, loses one for 2009 CSUS recruiting class

The Hornets 2008 class featured key contributors from the 2008-2009 team like C Josh Iversen, G Rodolfo Alloway, and F Josiah Samuels, so the goal this year was finding players that could compliment them and fill the void left by Prillman's departure.

The Sacramento State Hornets have secured a solid 2009 recruiting class, highlighted by a mix of high school prospects and junior college transfers who will bring depth and much-needed talent to Coach Brian Katz's roster. With the departure of star guard Anand Prillman, the incoming guards will be crucial in filling the offensive void, while JUCO forward Lavell Hartman will provide added much needed versatility and size.

All five signees are likely to get a chance on the 2009-2010 Hornets squad. While Homer Blanchard, more of a traditional primary ball-handler, will provide a fresh style of guard play to the Hornets. Katz hopes that incoming Guards O.J. Hopes and J.D. Homan will be able to cement a trend of scoring-addicted guards leading the Big Sky which was started by fresh alumni Anand Prillman.

F Lavell Hartman, a JUCO transfer who will be joining the 2009-2010 squad as a junior, is the type of athlete that spawned Sportscenter and highlight tapes. Hartman could probably jump out of the gym if he wanted to and is a serious threat coming through the lane on any fast break. Although listed at a little over 200lbs, he's severely undersized and outmatched in the strength department as he'd be lucky to hit 200lbs soaking wet. In a conference like the Big Sky, Hartman will shine based on athleticism alone but could be a liability against tougher non-conference and potential post season match ups.

The Hornets also received a verbal commitment from 3-star Los Angeles Center Preston Cameron early in the season, who would've added much needed depth to the team at the center position. However, after failing to sign a LOI, Katz noted that upon receiving his test scores, Cameron informed the coaching staff of potential eligibility concerns and hoped to join the team in the future, after spending sometime at the JUCO level.
