Miami's defense, running game carries them to rivalry win over Notre Dame
A redshirt freshman making his first career start on the road against a top twelve team in a rivalry game. Miami's leading rusher sidelined in the second half by an illness. An eighty-two yard touchdown to bring Notre Dame Stadium to life.

The Hurricanes weathered it all, riding an unlikely candidate Micah Kaapana to victory in their 27-10 win over No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday.

Bernie Flowers got the start with junior quarterback Keke Hagg sidelined with a groin injury and led Miami to four consecutive scoring drives in the first half, jumping out to an early 20-0 lead while Notre Dame's offense struggled with Juan Valles throwing a second quarter interception in the only drive that the Fighting Irish got into Miami territory. The Hurricanes had a chance to put the dagger in the first half but Flowers would be intercepted on an attempted deep pass.

The Irish would strike back in the second half, finding Eric Moss for a 43-yard gain to set up Bryce Potts field goal to avoid the shutout and as Miami's offense continued to sputter with Isaac Brown sidelined with an illness, Micah Gilbert would get behind the defense to make it 20-10 with his 82-yard touchdown.

Miami would turn to Kaapana, the transfer from Michigan, for the rest of the game, extending Miami's lead with a fourth quarter touchdown after Notre Dame was unable to capitalize on a strip sack of Flowers and missed the 48-yard field goal. He finished the game with a career high 182 yards rushing.

Top-20 defensive tackle JaMichael Sloman picks Miami over Alabama and Georgia
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports Miami Insider

Five-star defensive tackle JaMichael Sloman has committed to the University of Miami, picking the Hurricanes over Alabama and Georgia.

Sloman, the second ranked defensive tackle this cycle and the third ranked player from the state of Florida, is staying home to play for the hometown Hurricanes. A six-foot-two and 293 pound disruptive pass rusher, Sloman projects similar to Kevin Yeboah who has been a mainstay in Miami's defense since his arrival. He'll need to continue to retool his body and shed some baby fat but the framework is there for Sloman to be an All-American caliber player.

Miami added another defensive lineman prospect to the class in four-star defensive end Robert Coutu who has the ability to play defensive tackle as well. Miami did lose out on running back prospect Kyree Smalls, who has opted to stay out west and commit to the Oregon Ducks.

The Hurricanes are hosting the top ranked player in the country this week in cornerback Alex Tercero, who they feel confident in closing the deal with.

Bye Week Report: Miami's once daunting schedule now looks favorable, even with loss of quarterback Keke Hagg
Manny Ledo -- The Miami Herald Sports Columnist

We're a week into the month of October and the Miami Hurricanes already have two wins over ranked opponents and a potential third one the way if the Florida Gators continue to improve upon their 4-1 record. Miami's hot start and upcoming bye week is ideal as they are navigating life without starting quarterback Keke Hagg for the foreseeable future, sidelined with a groin injury that Mario Cristobal has labeled week-to-week.

The Hurricanes don't play another ranked opponent until Nov. 4 when they host Louisville and then end the season at North Carolina, who is currently undefeated. The once daunting end of the year now looks manageable with Florida State 1-5 and Clemson 2-3, giving a Miami a chance to potentially drop one game and still make the ACC Championship Game.

Team Leaders
Passing: Keke Hagg (71% completion, 1042 yards, 7 TD, 5 INT, 138.6 QB rating)
Rushing: Isaac Brown (347 yards, 5 ypc, 2 TD)
Receiving: David Tompkins (23 receptions, 270 yards, 2 TD)
Defense: CB Elias Raines (22 tkl, TFL, 8 INT, 3 PBU)

PFF Offensive Line Grade

Midseason Award - Most Valuable Player
Damari Brown's record breaking season with thirteen interceptions seemed like it might hold for a while but just a few years later, Elias Raines is in solid position to challenge it.

He has eight on the season already, needing five more to tie Brown's record. They've come in bunches for Raines with two three interceptions performance against Syracuse and Pittsburgh before intercepting two passes against Notre Dame.

Not only is Raines getting turnovers, he's also continuing to be a reliable corner, bordering on shutdown status after a tough spring where he struggled and was challenged for his starting spot.

Midseason Award - Most Improved Player
He caught just one pass last year, albeit going for a touchdown but Tompkins has emerged as Miami's top option in the slot and their most targeted receiver, regardless of who is at quarterback.

It still feels like Tompkins is on the verge of breaking one as he hasn't showcased his speed yet, averaging 11.7 yards per reception as a reliable, underneath option but it feels like on any one of those plays, he'll make a defender miss and take it eighty yards.

Midseason Award - Best Freshman
Not counting Bernie Flowers, who is a redshirt freshman, it's a toss up between Max North (8 receptions, 85 yards, TD) and Ethinosa Ha (5 receptions, 47 yards, 7 kick returns, 125 yards).

Ha has played more and been effective but it feels like North needs to start getting more snaps as whenever he's on the field, his presence is felt with his size and speed. The only tough part is unlike Ha, North primarily plays on the outside where Miami has two of their more senior and experienced receivers in Davon Momah and Miguel Escobar.

Midseason Superlative - Most Disappointing Unit
It's tough to say as this has been one of the more well rounded teams in recent years so by default, it might be the offensive line, although they haven't been that bad outside of the Florida game. The Hurricanes have played four different combinations on the offensive line through six games and similar to 2026, it seems like that'll continue to be the trend with them mixing and matching their top performing players.

Five-star cornerback Alex Tercero shocks the world, picks Georgia following official visit to Miami
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports Miami Insider

Five-star cornerback Alex Tercero, the top ranked player in the country, has made a surprise commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs just hours after his official visit to Miami.

Tercero, who is from Miami, was on campus all weekend meeting with Miami's coaching staff and players in a visit that was described by Tercero as a 'positive' step in his recruitment only to turn around Sunday evening with a surprise announcement that he'll be committing to the Georgia Bulldogs, teaming up with Ronald Abiamiri.

The Hurricanes coaching staff felt extremely confident internally that they'd be able to land Tercero and viewed this weekend as a potential finishing line in his recruitment but ultimately, Tercero said the opportunity to play in the SEC was too much to pass up.

This is arguably Miami's biggest recruiting loss under Mario Cristobal, rivaling Jeremiah Smith's commitment to Ohio State who ironically transferred to Miami following his freshman campaign.
