State of the Blue Jay: Red-hot Vladdy powers Blue Jays to playoffs - what's next?

In our last 'State of the Blue Jay', the Toronto Blue Jays were just outside of the playoff window, looking for any opportunity to somehow power past the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and the Tampa Bay Rays who were all ahead of the floundering Blue Jays in the standings.

Since then, the Blue Jays have added bullpen depth to deal with the down-the-line pitching that had landed them in hot water to begin with while adding batting power in second basemen Brandon Drury and third basemen Oneil Cruz. They have bounced starting pitchers Bowden Francis, Yosver Zulueta, and number one prospect Ricky Tiedemann in and out of the lineup and witnessed one of the hottest hitting streaks in baseball history.

Now, here they are in a Wild Card position with an opportunity to pull off one hell of a season clincher. The questions are now: how did they get here and what can they do next?

How did they get here
Beating the bad teams and folding against the good teams seems the most accurate reporting of how Toronto's first half of the season went. They were able to make do against floundering teams with pitching troubles such as the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Angels, and the Oakland Athletics. Still, they quickly found their red-hot offense evaporating in thin air against stronger teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox. Outside of ace pitcher Kevin Gausman and Alek Manoah, the team had been dealing with pitching that left a ton to be desired.

Despite this, the team was the hottest hitting team in baseball and their on-base percentage easily led the league. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finished second in MLB in home runs with 45 dingers - just three under his career-high of 48 that he hit in 2021 - and would certainly be in line for AL MVP honors if it wasn't for the absolute titan rival he has playing in the Bronx.

Also to mention is catcher Danny Jansen, who had an absolute career year and finished just outside of the top three in the American League in home runs with an eye-popping 39 home runs (more than double his previous career high of 17 that he hit for last year). Jansen has super-powered his free agent profile, as his contract is set to expire in the off-season.

The base-running profile they received once adding Oneil Cruz to the lineup greatly improved the team's speed rating; raising them from the basement of the league and influencing other speedsters like Kevin Kiermaier and Bo Bichette to try to steal more bags and go for the extra base. Speaking of Bichette, he led MLB in batting average after fellow standout Davis Schneider led the league for the majority of the season.

What can they do now?
The Toronto Blue Jays draw the Houston Astros to start their playoff run off in the Wild Card round. The Astros finished a distant second in the AL West behind the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers and just ahead of the Julio Rodriguez-led Seattle Mariners. The Astros boast one of the frontrunners for the AL Cy Young Award in Framber Valdez, finishing third in ERA behind the Rangers' duo of Nathan Eovaldi and Jacob DeGrom after slipping through September.

The team boasts a strong offense with Jose Altuve, who finished just behind the Yankees (Aaron Judge and Juan Soto and Blue Jays' duos (Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) in batting average while Yordan Alvarez had somewhat of a down year after heavy expectations to rival Judge in power hitting this season despite a hot start. Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker provide secondary hitting with Tucker having a great season with his elite base-running.

This feels more like a toss-up rather than the Astros being the all-encompassing favorite like they would have been considered a few months ago. The Astros' elite pitching versus the Blue Jays' elite batting is going to be intriguing and the Jays feel like they can catch the slacking Astros if they can get solid starting pitching.

If they were to get past the Astros, awaiting them are the likes of the Rangers and the Yankees, which is a whole David vs. Goliath thing of its own.

The Blue Jays fought like Hell to control their destiny and get to the post-season. Your guess is as good as ours now.
