Paul Rhinehart, Alec Lawrence get the start at linebacker in Miami's spring game despite late position switch

The Miami Hurricanes started two former safeties at linebacker in last Saturday's spring game as Paul Rhinehart and Alec Lawrence got the start with Miami's first team defense, helping guide the Orange team to a 26-23 win over the White team.

Rhinehart, a former five-star that has played nearly 900 snaps for the Hurricanes at safety, impressed with his physicality which is one of the reasons why Miami's coaching staff was excited about the move to linebacker. He finished the day with seven tackles, including an impressive looking play before the end of the first half where he hawked down running back Deron Tryon who tried to bounce a run to the outside on third and short.

Lawrence didn't look out of place either in terms of physicality but it was evident that he was slower on the trigger than Rhinehart and Alonzo DuBois, who started at linebacker with redshirt sophomore Eric Dixon for the White team. Rhinehart didn't make the switch to linebacker full-time until the third week of spring while Lawrence continues to take practice reps at both positions.

"I was really proud of the competitive nature that guys played with," defensive coordinator Skylor Magee, "I think [Rhinehart and Lawrence] are still getting comfortable and trusting themselves pre-snap but once the ball is live, they're playing at a high level."

It was another strong showing from Miami's crop of quarterbacks who had a really good spring as a group by all accounts. Bernie Flowers was the top quarterback for the Orange team. Redshirt sophomore Stephen Isaacs was behind Keke Hagg for the White team and then played in the second half on the Orange team.

Hagg's stat line was uneven. He said his showing was just "okay," going 15 of 35 for 273 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, but the senior who helped Miami to its first national title since 2001 is the clear-cut starter.

Cristobal said so himself.

"Our team knows that [Hagg] is the quarterback," Smart said. "He does a good job of leading our team team and really pushing that room. But you know what? Those other two guys have also done a tremendous job. I think if you ask them, they are really comfortable back there in the bullpen throwing the ball. I saw it today with both of them. They both had really good arm talent, and did a really good job."

Flowers went 14 of 26 for 274 yards playing mostly for the Orange and Isaacs went a combined 12 of 26 for 115 yards. Neither of them threw an TD or INT in what might be an early insight into next year's quarterback competition which might also include redshirt freshman Jeff Beavers.

Miami Hurricanes open fall camp with another national championship on their mind

The Miami Hurricanes begin fall camp this Thursday as they look to win back-to-back national championships for the first time in program history.

Back at quarterback is senior Keke Hagg, who enters the year as a dark horse for the Heisman and is on the cusp of breaking several Miami records, needing 2,034 yards to surpass Brad Kaaya and thirteen touchdowns to break the mark set by Ken Dorsey.

Among the returning starters on defense is cornerback Elias Raines, who is making the switch from No. 3 to No. 1 after recording thirteen interceptions last year. The Miami native has nineteen career interceptions, tied with Bennie Blades for the second most in school history. He is two interceptions shy of Ed Reed's record.

Perhaps no other coach has been more scrutinized and criticized than Mario Cristobal whose reputations as a relentless and successful recruiter has also served as a damning indictment in a perceived lack of success with said talent. Cristobal was able to get the monkey off his back this past January, winning sixteen games and rolling through the playoffs to bring a national championship to his alma mater for the first time since 2001.

Since it was Cristobal and Miami, it of course came with nitpicking of their perfect season with many pointing to the teams they played on their way to the national championship, beating Georgia Tech and a rematch against Notre Dame before facing off against an overmatched Rutgers team in the championship game.

They'll need to do it all over again with a clear target on them as they head into a 2029 season with a ton of talent returning.

Previewing Miami's Offense for 2029
Perhaps the only person more criticized than Cristobal in recent years has been quarterback Keke Hagg, who is quietly rising up the list of all time Miami quarterbacks. Hagg already has a national championship in stow, single-season records and is now within distance of becoming Miami's all-time leader in both yards and touchdowns.

Hagg has all of his receivers back but will have new faces with him in the backfield as Miami is replacing their top four rushers from last year. It's still a talented group in Michigan transfer Aidan Teague and former five-stars Deron Tryon (senior), Kaseem Dalton (redshirt freshman) and Javier Torrez (freshman).

Up front, Miami returns three starters from last year in guards Dominick Longo and Richard Cookus as well as tackle George Robledo. There are plenty of battles and talent to sort out throughout training camp on what the final five will look like but under Cristobal and Alex Mirabal, this has generally been a solid unit, at worst.

Previewing Miami's Defense for 2029
The Hurricanes need to replace their top three linebackers in Hugh Benson, Jacques Turk and Isaiah Rugamba as well as cornerbacks Robby Washington and O.J. Frederique, their two all-world defensive tackles in Kevin Yeboah and Artavius Jones as well as top pass rushers Elias Rudolph, Elias Williams, Walt Coffey and Booker Pickett.

It'll be a tall task for defensive coordinator Skylor Magee but the talent is there in defensive end Doug Bean, who seems poised to take that next step as a fifth-year senior who hasn't played much since his arrival as a four-star prospect. The Hurricanes return Shaun Turner, the former five-star who has first round potential after totaling ten tackles for loss last year in his first year as a starter.

At linebacker, it's a couple of converted safeties in Paul Rhinehart, who is up to 226 pounds now, and Alec Lawrence. They were both five-star players coming out of high school so the talent is there for them to replace Turks and Benson but a drop off in production should be expected. The Hurricanes will be leaning on their secondary to pick up the slack with returning starters Elias Raines, Tommy Stacy and LaMarcus Cook in the backend.

Miami's toughest game is against Notre Dame in their third game in less than twelve months but they get to face the Irish at home and coming off what should be an easy game against Temple. The rest of Miami's schedule is more than doable with their road games being against Syracuse, Ohio State coming off a down year, Virginia Tech and a three-game road trip against Cal, Clemson and Pittsburgh who were thoroughly mediocre last year.

Even if the Hurricanes stumble once or twice, it's hard to envision a scenario where they aren't in Charlotte at the end of the season and in a one-game sample, the Hurricanes are heads and shoulders above the rest of the ACC as it currently stands.
