Patriots survive late Broncos surge to win rainy season opener
New England's inability to close out drives nearly cost them the season opener, allowing the Denver Broncos to turn a near blowout into a close call, turning the ball over on downs and forcing a turnover in consecutive red zone drives by the Patriots.

In the end, New England's defense would prove to be too much for Bo Nix who failed to lead the Broncos to a game-tying drive in the final minutes of the game as the Patriots hung on to a 20-13 victory to open the 2026 NFL season.

The Patriots extended their lead to seventeen points with five minutes to go in the third quarter when Christian Watson got loose for a 26-yard touchdown pass. Watson, the free agent signing, had scored earlier in the game but it was called back due to a penalty.

After a Denver field goal to cut the lead to fourteen, the Patriots had a chance to make it a three possession game with a field goal but opted to go for it on 4th and goal from the Denver two-yard line where Drake Maye was sacked. Nix would completed a 54-yard pass to Colston Loveland on third and four and then escaped Chase Young's grasp for the five-yard touchdown with eight minutes left in the game to make it a one score game.

The Patriots once more drove down the field, aided by a 26-yard gain by Christian Watson and Rhamondre Stevenson converting a fourth and one from the Denver 30-yard line but with 3:45 remaining, Maye made his first mistake of the game with an interception to Denver cornerback Isaiah Rogers Sr.

Denver could convert a fourth and nine with a 37-yard completion to Courtland Sutton but once they got the ball to the New England 41-yard line, Nix would throw four straight incompletions to end the game.

Patriots claim offensive tackle Jonah Williams, release running back Kyle Monangai
The New England Patriots have claimed offensive tackle Jonah Williams, who was waived by the Atlanta Falcons. They have demoted running back Kyle Monangai to the practice squad in order to free up the roster space.

Williams, 28, was a first round pick by Cincinnati back in 2019 before signing with Arizona in 2024 where he spent two seasons with the Cardinals that were marred by injuries. He signed with the Falcons this past season and initially made the roster before being released last week. He was one of two claims that the Patriots submitted, the other being former Buccaneers and Texans running back Rachaad White who was claimed by New Orleans.

Monangai, who did not play a snap in the season opener, heads to the practice squad after having an impactful rookie season where he rushed for 440 yards and had five total touchdowns. The Patriots improved their overall depth at running back this offseason with the addition of Derrick Henry and the drafting of Gavin Sawchuk, who returned a kick against Denver for 27 yards.

Antonio Gibson, who missed the opener with an injury, is expected to be active this week along with tight end Oscar Delp.

Drake Maye injured in Patriots win over Jacksonville as Travis Etienne stopped at the one-yard line
Trevor Lawrence's 427-yard performance ended up being one-yard too short as Travis Etienne Jr. was tackled at the one-yard line on the final play of the game as New England secured the 38-30 win over Jacksonville on Sunday.

The impressive win came at a heavy cost as quarterback Drake Maye left the game with an apparent shoulder injury he sustained on a screen pass to Rhamondre Stevenson to set up Andres Borregales' 34-yard field goal with 1:49 remaining

"We'll see what the imaging shows," said Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo after the game.

Prior to the injury, Maye had kept New England in the game after the Jaguars jumped out to an early 24-21 lead at halftime, throwing three touchdowns in the first half to counter Lawrence's field day. Maye completed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Christian Watson in the third quarter to take the lead and following Lavonte David's interception of Lawrence, Derrick Henry would find the endzone to make it 35-24 midway through the third quarter.

Jacksonville would responded with a Christian Kirk touchdown and after the Maye injury and Borregales field goal, Lawrence got Jacksonville to the red zone with completions of seventeen, eight, seven, nine and 22 yards to place the ball on the New England three-yard line for the final play of the game where he would dump it off to Etienne who was tackled by Marte Mapu at the one-yard line.
