Patriots acquire Trey Lance from Commanders as Drake Maye sidelined with shoulder injury
The New England Patriots have traded for quarterback Trey Lance from the Washington Commanders in exchange for a 2027 fifth round pick, a 2028 sixth round pick and a 2029 seventh round pick. They have released offensive tackle Ryan van Demark to get under the 53-man roster limit.

The trade comes after news that quarterback Drake Maye is expected to miss at least one game with a shoulder injury he suffered against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the final offensive play of the game for the Patriots in their win over Jacksonville. Maye was tackled to the ground after completing a screen pass and immediately headed to the locker room. The initial concern was that surgery would be required to repair the star quarterback's torn labrum but that does not appear to be the case as head coach Jerod Mayo designated Maye as "week to week" and confirmed that he will not be undergoing surgery during the season.

The expectation is for Joe Milton III to make his first career start this week against San Francisco with Lance serving as the team's backup. Milton has yet to take an NFL regular season snap since being drafted in the same draft as Maye in the sixth round. Lance was a first round pick by the 49ers in 2021 and last played in 2024 for the Dallas Cowboys. He spent the 2025 season as Justin Herbert's backup with the Chargers and was Jayden Daniels' backup in Washington prior to the trade.

The Patriots are also without receiver Barion Brown, who went down with an injury early in the game against Jacksonville. Javon Baker replaced him, catching four passes for sixty yards. Brown is expected to miss several weeks.

It was pretty much Derek Carr or promote Michael Pratt from the practice squad. Been wanting to get a better backup for a while, now I can flip Milton or Lance once another QB gets hurt :kghah:
