If You Can't Beat 'Em
Game 5
“We good in here?” Derek stuck his head in the door of the training room.
I had been in the back for a few minutes getting my ankle looked over by the training staff after I collided with Obi while getting a rebound.
“Man, they just let anybody back here these days.” I laughed.
Derek held up his right hand with his 2030 championship ring. “You know I got VIP privileges.”
“He just needs to rest it,” Whitney pointed to my ankle. “I wouldn’t recommend him going back out there though.”
“I feel fine right now.”
“But I don’t need you running and cutting and making it worse right now. And look at how Zion and Jason have been playing you all series. I’m surprised it was Obi that took you out.”
“Crazy, huh? Can I at least go back out there for moral support or whatever?”
“Yeah, but I’ve already sent a text to the coaching staff to let Coach Silas know not to let you back out there under any circumstances.”
“Damn,” I said sarcastically. “Where is the trust, Whit?”
“I trust you to be who you are. So, I had to let them know beforehand.”
I shook my head and climbed down off the table. She had my ankle wrapped up pretty tight, but she was right. If we win tonight, the series is over. If we don’t, I’ll be 95 to 100 percent for the next game.
I walked through the tunnel with a slight limp to catch the final thirty seconds of the game. I wanted to be on the floor with my team. It was high energy, the crowed was frenetic. We were still trailing by three points, but the guys were giving everything they had. With two seconds left, Ant put up a jumper that was blocked by Zion to end it. I stared at the scoreboard in Madison Square Garden for a second, as the guys headed back to the locker room. No one wanted to look at me. I sighed and looked at Coach Silas before I did a quick interview with Malika Andrews.
The locker room was really quiet when I got back there. Even Remy was quiet, which is rare for him. He always had some shit to say.
“Yo, before y’all get too in y’all feelings and shit, we still got this. I’m not tripping off this loss. We are still the team to beat in this one. ”
“Yeah, but--” Obi started, looking at my ankle.
“Yeah, but nothing. I wasn’t playing that great before you shoved your foot under mine.” I chuckled to let him know I was joking. “Y’all stepped it up. Ball didn’t bounce our way tonight. I’m sure Commissioner Silver is loving this ratings shit.”
Everyone laughed as some of the tension was released.
“We got two days off before we head to Portland. Coach, make sure the Michelob is ice cold. Because we from around the way, we leaving there with something.”
Everyone laughed at my Denzel Washington impression and went back to getting showered and dressed to head home for the night. Obi came over to my locker.
“Bro, be cool. I’ll be ready to go for Wednesday. I promise. Shit happens.”
About an hour later, I was done with my media rounds. I had a text from Kori telling me that she was still at the arena waiting for me to finish up. I found her talking with Gerald and Estelle, her two favorite security officers. I could only hear bits of her conversation, but I could tell she was pissed. She’s been going off since the Boston series.
“You ready, babe?” I said as I reached over to dap up both officers.
“Your girl was on one tonight,” Estelle said, laughing. “Thought I was gonna have to haul her out of the Garden.”
“What?” I laughed. It’s hard to believe that this sweet second grade teacher, Miss Sunshine and Rainbows herself, has been ready to throw hands for this whole series. “Say it ain’t so, Ko.”
“I’m just saying are the refs fucking blind? They’re trying to kill him out there.”
“They just wanna win.”
“But at what cost?”
I shake my head. “I’m glad Bella isn’t here to witness this behavior.”
I dap up Gerald and Estelle again before putting my arm around Kori’s shoulders. “Let me get Claressa Shields outta here. Thanks for keeping an eye on her for me. Good night, y’all.”
“Bring that trophy back to MSG, man!” Gerald called out.
“You got that, Big Dog.” I raised my hand in acknowledgement.
When we reached the parking garage, I walked to the passenger side and opened the door for Kori. She stood there and raised her eyebrow at me.
“It’s just tweaked, I can drive,” I said.
“But you’re not.”
“You gotta stop this. I’m gonna be fine in twenty-four hours.”
“Well, until then,” she held out her hand. I dug the remote out of my pocket.
“You don’t even need the key. It’s push to start.”
She ignored me as she walked around to the driver’s side and climbed in.
“Don’t be driving my car all fast either.”
She laughed.
“Get in this car and off your ankle, boy.”
“Redlining my shit,” I mumbled.
####################
“Babe!” I heard Kori say as water splashed in my face.
“Huh?”
“Are you even listening to me?”
She convinced me to take a bath in lieu of a shower. I only agreed since she said that she would join me.
“What you think?” I grinned. “You didn’t put enough bubbles in here.”
She moved across the tub and leaned back against me. She folded her arms across her chest.
“You’ve got my undivided attention for the next two minutes.” I said.
“I don’t like how they’re playing you. Jason literally tackled you tonight.”
“The refs called the flagrant.”
“His ass should have been tossed.”
“But he wasn’t. It’s all good though. I’m gonna rest tonight and then we’ll make the flight to Portland tomorrow and close shop Wednesday night.”
“You’d better. I don’t think I can watch another game like that.”
Game 6 it is then.
Present
The buzzer sounds in the Moda Center as my teammates and the Knicks fans in attendance go crazy. After congratulating Keegan, Mikal and Zion on a well-played series, I ran over to the rows of seats under the basket to hug my family. My uncle chartered a flight to Portland for everybody. We share a hug and I release a deep breath. Despite how good we were this season, the critics were still on our asses about the first championship because my uncle, “Mr. 99 OVR” was on the team.
“You really got that dawg in you, huh, Nephew?” He pulled a cigar out of his pocket.
“You know my last name.”
“Well, what they gonna say about you now, Noah?”
“That boy a two-time champion!”
“Damn right. Love you, Kid.”
“Thanks. Love you too, Big Unc.”
“What I tell you, girl?” I say to Kori as I pull her into a bone crushing hug. “Your man did that, huh?”
“Yes, my man did.”
“That boy a champion, huh? No asterisks. No second guessing. None of that. Just me and my squad! We did that shit!”
She laughed as she gave me a kiss. I pulled back when I felt small hands hitting my leg. It was Isabella. She was wearing a custom Noah Baldwin jersey that my grandma made for her out of two of my jerseys. One half was blue and the other white.
“I’m sweaty, Lil’ Miss.” I warned her.
“It’s okay this one time,” Isabella said as I pick her up from the floor. She gave me a big kiss on the cheek. “Congratulations!”
“Thank you.”
“Can I have this cap?”
“You sure can. I’ll get another one.”
I turned around to find Malika Andrews behind me waiting to do her interview. Kori reached for Isabella, but I shook my head and held her in my arms.
“To come off a one point loss in Game 5 to being crowned champions in a blowout. The Knicks are now back to back champs. What was the mindset for you all coming into this one, Noah?”
“You saw the suits in the tunnel, right? This was 'business trip' type shit.”
“Swear jar, Noah.” Isabella said, loud enough to be picked up by the mic.
“My bad. We had to come in and take care of business. Treat it like a Game Seven.”
After I finish up with Malika, it was time to go to the stage for the trophy presentation. Kori said that Isabella had to stay with her, so I made sure they were right in the front. When they called my name for Finals MVP, Isabella screamed at the top of her lungs.
“Congratulations, Noah,” said Commissioner Silver.
“Thank you. Thank you to my brothers on this stage with me. The coaching staff. Everybody works so hard and it’s great to see it all pay off. Thank you to my family. Thank you to the fans who motivate me to play at my best every night. This is for the city, man! I love you, New York! Good night, Portland.”
A chorus of boos rained down, but I continued smiling. Nothing was going to spoil this moment.
