Miami Hurricanes running back Kaseem Dalton to have surgery on dislocated ankle

The Miami Hurricanes might be without one of their top running backs as redshirt sophomore Kaseem Dalton is expected to have surgery to repair his dislocated ankle, an injury he picked up in Miami's win over Vanderbilt last week, multiple sources told The Athletic. News of Dalton's injury was first reported by On3.

Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal spoke with the media on Monday, commenting that Dalton did pick up an injury but did not provide a timeline for his return. The sources added that a return this season is still on the table for Dalton, should the Hurricanes make a deep playoff run but that a return was "not likely".

A former five-star prospect, Dalton has been part of Miami's deep stable of running backs, second on the team with seven touchdowns after having eight last year as primarily a short-yardage option. The 235-pounder is averaging 4.6 yards per carry and in two of Miami's most important games -- Florida and Alabama -- he had over ten carries in both games. While Dalton had seen a dip in carries in recent weeks, his snap counts had remained consistent heading into the Vanderbilt game where he played just ten snaps before getting hurt.

Miami has plenty of options to replace Dalton, who was third on the team in carries behind Aidan Teague (144) and Broderick Booker (77) with sixty-four carries. Behind Dalton is Javier Torrez (34) whose actually played more snaps than Dalton and true freshman Sammy Ramey who had a breakout performance against Vanderbilt, carrying the ball four times for forty yards. The Hurricanes would continue their deep rotation by replacing Dalton with Ramey or simply tighten it up, freeing up more carries for the likes of Booker and Torrez behind Teague

Four-star quarterback Alec Baer commits to Miami despite late push from Georgia

The University of Miami has landed its 23rd commitment of the 2031 recruiting cycle as Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military School quarterback Alec Baer announced his commitment to the school on Tuesday via social media. The six-foot-five, 208-pound four-star quarterback committed to the Hurricanes during his official visit this past weekend before making the announcement public a few days later.

Baer, who recently picked up an offer from in-state Georgia, was a bold recruitment by Miami's coaching staff with plenty of schools, including Georgia at one point, pulling their offers following his expulsion last year. Miami's football operation felt confident in their own internal evaluation of Baer, both on the field and off it, to pull the trigger on offering Baer a few weeks ago, which fast tracked his recruitment.

Georgia entered the picture as early as last week when Baer announced that he was set to visit the Hurricanes this past weekend, joining West Virginia as the only D-I schools to offer the top seven quarterback. The Bulldogs made a strong push to get Baer to hold off his commitment but the Hurricanes were able to see it through.

As a prospect, the comparisons to current Miami quarterback Terrance Harris are valid as they have similar builds and athletic profile with Harris edging out Baer in terms of straight line speed but Baer being the more developer passer, particularly in the short to intermediate area, at this stage in their development. Another good comp for Baer would be a taller, more slender Bernie Flowers as they have similar playing styles in terms of being able to escape the pocket and make impressive off-platform throws without wowing you with their speed.

No. 1 Miami's 42-game winning streak ends in College Station
The No. 1-ranked Miami Hurricanes suffered its first defeat since the 2028 Cotton Bowl on Saturday afternoon, falling 21-14 to unranked Texas A&M in a wild game at Kyle Field. The loss snapped a run of 42 consecutive wins, as well as 43 straight in regular-season games, for the Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes were penalized twelve times, including a kickoff return that was called back for holding, and were shutout for the first half but still had a chance to win it in the final moments of the game. Hurricanes quarterback Bernie Flowers had three consecutive scrambles to kick start Miami's drive that began on their own 15-yard line with 1:44 remaining, trailing by a touchdown. Flowers then threw two straight incompletions and on the final play of the game, Texas A&M cornerback Anton Rattay was able to get back into the play to intercept a pass intended for Etinosa Ha that had traveled sixty yards.

"We played a sloppy game and there were a couple of tough calls that went against our way," said Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal after the game, "You're in College Stadium, a million folks in the stands so that was expected and we just didn't handle it well."

Miami had an impressive goal line stand early in the game, stopping Texas A&M quarterback Kameron Carruthers on a quarterback keeper on fourth and goal from the one-yard line. But even after they drove the ball down the field on the ensuing possession, getting to the Texas A&M 27-yard line, a penalty against the offense would lead to three straight incompletions and then a punt. Four plays later, Carruthers found Brian Chaz for a 54-yard gain and then a touchdown a few plays later to take the 14-0 lead at the half.

The Hurricanes remain in pole position to make it to the SEC Championship Game but would have clinched it with a win. They play Tennessee next week on Senior Day in Miami Gardens.
