University of Miami hires former Hurricane Brandon Harris to be next defensive coordinator

Miami football has added a familiar name to its coaching staff as Brandon Harris is taking over as the Hurricanes' defensive coordinator, replacing Skylor Magee who was hired at Auburn as theri head coach.

He grew up in South Florida and attended Miami, where he played cornerback from 2008-10 before being drafted by the Houston Texans in 2011. Harris spent six seasons in the NFL, finishing his playing career with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in 2017. His father, Tim Harris Sr., is a high school coaching legend in Miami, having thrived at Booker T. Washington Senior High School.


He spent the past two seasons serving as the defensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic and previously worked at Florida International as a cornerbacks coach, defensive analyst and graduate assistant.

“I’m incredibly excited to return to 'The U' and compete at the highest level in the SEC,” Harris said in a statement. “Being from Miami, it's been a pleasure to watch Mario Cristobal build this program to where it needs to be and I'm even more excited to be a part of this great culture that Coach [Cristobal] has built here."

The Hurricanes are also on the market for a new offensive coordinator with Nebraska hiring Chris Weinke as their head coach.

Miami Hurricanes Hire Tim Beck as Offensive Coordinator After Chris Weinke Departure to Nebraska

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes have found their new play caller, hiring former Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Tim Beck to replace Chris Weinke, who hired at Nebraska as their next head coach.

Weinke leaves Coral Gables after helping lead the Hurricanes to two national championships, producing some of the most explosive offenses in college football during his tenure. The former Heisman Trophy winner was able to build on the success of predecessor Shannon Dawson, turning Miami into a high-powered yet balanced offense that featured the program's first Heisman winner in nearly four decades.

While Weinke’s departure was expected in coaching circles, the challenge for head coach Mario Cristobal was replacing one of the most successful play-callers in school history without losing momentum. Miami and Cristobal didn't go after the biggest of names but instead landed on Beck, whose recent stop in the SEC provided a surprising impression despite Vanderbilt's overall struggles.

Beck arrives in Miami after a tumultuous tenure at Vanderbilt, which ended with a 3-9 record this past season and the dismissal of the entire coaching staff. On paper, it’s not the kind of résumé that typically earns a coordinator job at a national championship contender. But Cristobal and his staff saw something deeper in Beck’s offensive philosophy—and got a first-hand look earlier this year.

In a 38-20 loss to Miami, Beck’s Vanderbilt offense racked up 343 passing yards, consistently moving the ball through the air and testing the Hurricanes’ secondary with tempo, misdirection, and layered route combinations. Though Miami ultimately pulled away in the second half, Cristobal reportedly came away highly impressed with the gameplan Beck deployed.

“He really made us work,” Cristobal said in a statement on Monday. “We had to make serious adjustments in that game. The way he attacked our coverage concepts, the use of motion, his ability to identify our tendencies—it was clear Tim has a next-level football mind. That stuck with me. He brings experience, creativity, and a competitive edge that fits what we want to do here.”

Prior to joining Vanderbilt's coaching staff, he was previously an offensive analyst for the TCU Horned Frogs football program for the 2021 season. Beck served as the head football coach at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas from 2010 to 2019, compiling a record of 82–35. He led the 2011 Pittsburg State Gorillas football team to the NCAA Division II Football Championship.
