Hurricanes not expected to be a player in Brent Sampson's recruitment

Former Kansas quarterback Brent Sampson entered the transfer portal last Monday and was immediately linked to the Miami Hurricanes, with numerous recruiting services putting the Hurricanes in Sampson's top three preferred locations along with Alabama and Notre Dame. The interest, however, appears to be one sided.

The Hurricanes aren't expected to pursue a transfer portal quarterback and instead feel "really confident" about the quarterback situation heading into spring football according to one source close to the program. Miami is losing starter Bernie Flowers to the NFL Draft but have plenty of young quarterbacks in tow in Terrance Harris, Jeff Beavers and true freshman Alec Baer who are expected to compete for the starting job in the spring. Harris is viewed as the favorite, having played in three games last season and being the highest ranked recruit of the bunch.

Miami does appear to be involved in the recruitment of receiver Brian Trapasso, who has two years of eligibility following his transfer from Florida. He is one of three Florida receivers, the others being Eric Lucien, the top ranked receiver in the transfer portal, and Alfonso Qualls that entered the transfer portal. Lucien appears to be headed back home to Alabama with the Crimson Tide emerging as a favorite while a homecoming could be the case for Trapasso as well as he is from Miami. The two sides have met and an official visit is expected to materialize in the coming days.

Another interesting name to watch is East Carolina's Tyler Griffen, the six-foot-seven left tackle out of Dunnellon, Florida. Griffen wouldn't be a plug-and-play transfer for the Hurricanes as the jump from G5 to SEC at such a critical position is a big ask but he's a big body that the Hurricanes could look to add to their deck at offensive line as they do need to replace left tackle Darrius Keyes.

Handicapping Miami Hurricanes' quarterback battle heading into spring football

The Miami Hurricanes will not be in the market for a transfer portal quarterback, as first reported by 247 Sports' Eddie Fernandez. The Hurricanes are instead going to roll with their four returning players on scholarship and their early enrollee four-star quarterback Alec Baer.

It's a long way to go between now and when the Hurricanes open the season in August but for now, we know that Miami's next starting quarterback is on its roster currently. Here are the candidates:

Jeff Beavers #9, RS Junior

Of the likely top contenders, Beavers is the more seasoned in terms of years spent at Miami as he is entering his fourth-year with the program, the same stage that Bernie Flowers was at when he was elevated to full-time starter. A heralded recruit in his own right, Miami beat out Florida State and UCF to land Beavers who at the time was drawing comparisons to Flowers due to his scrambling ability and athleticism.

Ultimately what turned Flowers from a fun player into a productive one was his ability to throw the football and play from the pocket. That'll be the area of focus for Beavers this offseason as he might be Miami's best athlete in the quarterback room but if he doesn't improve as a passer, it might not matter. It doesn't help Beavers' case that the Hurricanes have a new offensive coordinator, which helps negate his extra years in Miami's program but he remains a likely candidate to be Miami's starter once it's all said and done.

Beavers' former backup and another South Florida native that drew comparisons to Flowers, Boozer is a dynamic gunslinger who does his best work out of the pocket. Unlike Beavers, however, he doesn't have the elite physical traits that Beavers possesses in terms of speed and arm strength. This hindered Boozer in Miami's spring game last year where he really struggle as the speed of the game just seemed to be going too fast for him.

Truth be told, it's hard to imagine Boozer starting at Miami unless he drastically improves in other areas to help mitigate his physical shortcomings.

Despite being the youngest of the players mentioned thus far, Harris is the most experienced having played in three games last season and thrown the most passes at the college level amongst them. Even though Jeff Beavers was the official backup on Miami's depth chart, it was Harris that the Hurricanes ensured got some valuable reps, whenever possible in a blowout, and not Beavers.

If you couple that with the fact that he's the highest ranked recruit out of them and that the Hurricanes beat out Georgia and Alabama in what was likely a resource extensive recruitment process, it's hard to not see Harris winning the job. He already got the start over both Beavers and Boozer in last year's spring game as the starter opposite of Flowers.

For Harris, it's all about cleaning up the little things and becoming more consistent with his fundamentals and footwork. If he's able to do that this spring and show that he can be relied upon to make the right decisions at the right time, he's the clear favorite to be QB1.

Former East Carolina offensive tackle Tyler Griffen commits to the Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes have bolstered their offensive line with the addition of Tyler Griffen, a standout offensive tackle transferring from East Carolina. Griffen announced his commitment via social media on Monday morning.

An impressive six-foot-seven and 317 pounds, Griffen has ideal size and strength to make the jump to the SEC trenches after starting at East Carolina this past season. Griffen is originally from Dunnellon, about five hours north of Miami and is returning to state of Florida after weighing offers from Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Penn State. Griffen visited Miami early in the process where the Hurricanes emerged as the team to beat and were able to land his commitment pretty soon after.

Griffen figures to be highly involved in the battle this spring to replace left tackle Darrius Keyes as well as bringing some developmental upside as he does have three years of eligibility remaining. The Hurricanes do have a history of bringing in guys via the transfer portal, sitting them for a year while they learn under offensive line coach Alex Mirabal and then elevating them into starters. This was the case with players such as Will Larkins and Jalen Browning that were not instant starters but eventually grew into that role.

going to make a separate save and advance to the season with a bunch of games scheduled against teams I'll never play in the regular season and likely won't see in the playoffs (FCS, bad teams, etc.) and then treat those games as spring games, scrimmage, fall camp, etc. to give a more accurate representation instead of just running random plays at practice and judging players based on sole their ratings so you can see players that are lower rated having a good stretch of games and playing over guys ahead of them.

Miami Hurricanes tight end Orlando Lord eyes bigger role in Tim Beck's offense

University of Miami senior tight end Orlando Lord is the lone returning starter at a skill position for the Hurricanes as Miami is set to undergo the most drastic roster turnover in the Mario Cristobal era, needing to replace virtually every key player that touched the ball for the Hurricanes last season.

For all of Chris Weinke's success as Miami's offensive coordinator, however, a valid criticism would be his usage of the tight end position. At its peak, Juan Woodside caught 38 passes in Weinke's offense, a drop off from Elijah Arroyo's 68 receptions in Shannon Dawson's final year as offensive coordinator, leading the team in catches.

Last year for Vanderbilt, under new Miami offensive coordinator Tim Beck, Gideon Orakpo caught 34 passes for 474 yards, averaging 39.5 yards per game and 13.9 yards per reception. Lord, a former five-star recruit that's entering his fifth-year of college football, views that as his floor after averaging just eleven yards per reception and 23 yards per game in Weinke's offense.

"[Orakpo] had a really good game against us," says Lord of the sophomore's 126-yard performance against the Hurricanes last season, "He's a really good player but I feel like I can be even better in [Beck's offense] and I'm really excited about getting a chance to be more involved in the passing game."

The lack of a clear top option in the slot, which the Hurricanes had the past three seasons in David Tompkins, Davon Momah and Etinosa Ha, makes Lord even more valuable for whoever ends up being the Hurricanes' starting quarterback, who will be a first-time starter. Lord feels he can be a safety blanket for Miami's young quarterback as well as stretch the field.

"I think I'm going to surprise a lot of people with how versatile my game is," Lord says, "I'm putting a lot of pressure on myself and that's how I want it because I need to start making plays, showing people just how talented I am and how I can help our team win another championship."

Lord leads all active Miami players in games played with 49 and is the only offensive player with more than 30 games played.

Hurricanes add two of the portal's top players in Tulsa's Stephon Bynum, Florida's Brian Trapasso

The University of Miami's transfer portal haul is turning into an impressive one after signing the portal's second-ranked player at both safety and receiver in Stephon Bynum and Brian Trapasso respectively.

Bynum played two seasons at Tulsa after redshirting as a freshman, recording 106 tackles with an interception and ten pass breakups. Bynum primarily played free safety at Tulsa but projects to be a more box safety in Miami's defense with the Hurricanes already having a deep-lying safety in Bobby Haslam. Bynum's profile projects him to fare relatively well in that role at 215-pounds and being a willing tackler. A former high school cornerback, Bynum has also shown the ability to match up against slot receivers and tight end in man coverage. The Hurricanes had a similar player last year in Thomas Manning that they acquired in the transfer portal and used as a safety/nickel hybrid given his cornerback background. It remains to be seen how new defensive coordinator Brandon Harris' defense will differ from Skylor Magee's.

Miami needed help at receiver and they might have just landed their WR1 in Trapasso who averaged sixteen yards per reception last season for 455 yards and five touchdowns. A prototypical X-receiver, Trapasso has all of the traits and skills you want in an outside receiver with his ability to beat press coverage, create separation and high-point the football when he is covered. He might not be the athletic freak that Max North was as few are but he's a bit of a hybrid between North and Duke Cundiff, Miami's two outside receivers last year with his ability to be effective after the catch.

The Hurricanes beat out Nebraska and Georgia for Trapasso while Notre Dame and Oklahoma were the other schools that Bynum visited.

The Hurricanes are also pursuing high school running back Randy Evensen, a three-star prospect out of West Palm. Evensen has been committed to Nebraska since November but did not sign with the Cornhuskers during the Early Signing Period which is when the Hurricanes turned up their recruitment on him. Nebraska continues to be the favorite to land Evensen but the Hurricanes continue to make up ground.
