"Rivalry week is an event that inspires a lot of emotion. We want to use that to our benefit, not our detriment. We want this win badly. Getting back on our feet and finishing what we started on a positive note is of the utmost importance for our regime. This is much bigger than just this season. This shows former, current, and future Minutemen that we mean business now in Amherst. We've severely improved this season, and we want to continue to move forward in an upward trajectory. We need to win the line of scrimmage, establish the run, and take care of the football. Everything else will manage itself.."

UMass capitalizes in season finisher, slides past rival UConn

Thanks to a three-touchdown effort from running back Jalen John, the UMass Minutemen were able to end their regular season on a high note, defeating rival UConn Huskies at home, 28-24. UMass breaks a two-game win streak in the rivalry from UConn, who had won the last two seasons.

John opened the scoring for the game with his classic goal-line push before doubling up with a seven-yard scamper in the red zone for his second touchdown of the game. "It felt good to get in that end zone, especially after such a tough week last game [against Georgia]," commented Jalen John after the game. "It was frustrating last week to find any lanes. It felt like we responded well in the run game and did our part."

Freshman quarterback Ahmad Haston, seemingly the quarterback for the foreseeable future after snapping up the job from senior Taisun Phommachanh, struggled mightily and almost saw himself taken out for the senior. He threw three costly interceptions - his sole touchdown being thrown to his favorite target, Jakobie Keeney-James, late in the second quarter.

The Huskies carried a ton of momentum from late in the second quarter into the second half, scoring 21 points unanswered, including T.J. Sheffield returning a punt 80 yards to end the first half.

John would crush the momentum with his third touchdown of the game in the third quarter before both defenses stepped up and created a punt party from both offenses.

"We sort of wished we executed a tad better. There were a lot of good plays that we left on the field. We're a much more talented team than we showed today. However, we finished with a win and that's what we came home to do," commented offensive coordinator James Xavier, finishing his first season in collegiate football as a coordinator with a final record of 7-5.

We'll certainly take that. It had its highs and it had its lows. Going to try and zoom through another year or two before we CFB 26 drops. Who knows, might even keep it going afterwards.

Definitely a big year for us. Hopefully taking major steps next year. As for a bowl game, we shall see
