Building through the trenches: UMass adds trio of offensive lineman to recruiting cycle

AMHERST, MA -- The University of Massachusetts has maintained throughout its entire recruitment process that the offensive line is an area of great priority. Graduating five offensive linemen (3 tackles, 1 guard, and 1 center) at the end of this year has proven great motivation for the UMass coaching staff to get on the road and reload the cupboard with young talent.

Concluding their winningest season in recent history behind the addition of offensive coordinator James Xavier, the team has managed to add four offensive linemen thus far, notably getting the commitments of one-star offensive tackle Ezekiel Ozongwu out of New Jersey and guards, two-star Eric Hurns (Pennsylvania) and one-star Donte Finger (Connecticut).

Though not the most awe-inspiring class in college football, head coach Don Brown has maintained that they are looking to corner their geographic market, though they continue to battle with the likes of Rutgers and UConn, who they have seen their fair share of losses to all season long.

“These are high-character guys we’re adding, who aren’t running from a challenge of being a part of the building blocks of a new culture, and I respect that more than anything,” commented Xavier on the commitments he managed to land at the end of the season. “They are going to be proud of what we’re building here.”

The team is looking to shore up a few more recruits as the playoffs rage on, including edge rusher Tyler Tongue out of their own backyard, Sudbury, Massachusetts, and offensive lineman David Rossi, both three-star recruits. The expectation is that UMass will be knee-deep in the transfer portal to reload with more veteran talent for next season.

The team, unfortunately, lost out on three-star offensive tackle Malcolm O'Neil out of Milford, MA. The UConn Huskies managed to snipe the 6'7" giant out of their own backyard. The team has seen many of their targets snapped up by the likes of surrounding areas such as Boston College, UConn, and Rutgers. The team remains high on prospects such as HB JaMichael Mooney, WR George Stewart, athlete Tavares Holiday.

Dominant season from NC State's Grayson McCall lands him the Heisman Trophy

An unprecedented season from North Carolina State sees their prized senior quarterback, Grayson McCall, awarded with the greatest honor in the land, the Heisman Trophy. McCall wins the trophy as the nation's top prize over Washington State's John Mateer and Oregon's Dillon Gabriel after only one interception all season, going into the ACC Championship game against #8 Clemson.

The senior quarterback out of Indian Trail, North Carolina, managed to slide past Clemson, 33-30, thanks to his 352 passing yards as the Wolfpack enter the College Football Playoff, gaining a bye to see who they will play in the second round.

UMass draws Florida Atlantic in First Responder Bowl

After a standout season headed by the two-headed monster of head coach Don Brown and new offensive coordinator James Xavier, the UMass Minutemen have risen from a 3-9 record to an impressive 7-5 record, including impressive outings against top-tiered teams like Liberty, pushing them to overtime and holding the second-best team in the nation, the Georgia Bulldogs, to only 30 points. Not to mention upsetting the top-25 ranked Missouri Tigers at home.

As a reward, the UMass Minutemen have been tapped to take on the Florida Atlantic Owls in the First Responder Bowl. This will be the second bowl game in team history, their last being the Tangerine Bowl against East Carolina in 1964, in which they lost 14-13.

"It's one hell of an accomplishment for us; we need to savour moments like this," commented head coach Don Brown. "There are a lot of uncertain things coming in the distance when it comes to collegiate football. The theme around the locker room is certainly 'enjoy the little things.'"

One of the biggest question marks is how long the highly-touted offensive coordinator plans to stick around at Amherst. Though he has often shared his well-rehearsed answer that he is focused on what is happening within the Minutemen building, he is widely expected to be sought after for many head coaching openings. Namely, the head coaching position at San Diego State - a sure step-up from his current position.

Keeney-James’ hat-trick in final game helps UMass survive in bowl win

Jakobie Keeney-James retains hope that he will be suiting up at the next level in the National Football League on Sundays. However, he insists that if this is going to be his final game of football, he's going to go out with a bang.

He did just that, hauling in an impressive three touchdowns as the UMass Minutemen won the First Responder Bowl against the Florida Atlantic Owls, 35-30.

The Minutemen dominated in the first half, jumping to a 28-10 lead thanks to their stars coming alive and the offense flowing immediately. T.Y. Harding ripped off a long catch-and-run, being downed at the FAU one-yard line before power running back Jalen John pushed the ball across the goal line. Harding, having done all the work on the first touchdown, would get his own score in the form of a 13-yard backline scramble, connecting with quarterback Ahmad Haston.

"We were buzzing from the get-go for sure," commented quarterback Ahmad Haston, hoping to take what he's learned in his first season playing into next year, where he would be the presumptive starter. "We're losing a lot of guys, but the guys that remain, we're going to take this performance and build on it in the off-season."

FAU and UMass would trade two scores each in the second quarter, Keeney-James continuing to pound away at the Owls' secondary in his duel with FAU star cornerback DaeDae Hill.

Senior quarterback Taisun Phommachanh would be subbed into the game in the fourth quarter to finish off his collegiate career. However, he had to steer the Minutemen away from disaster as the Owls attempted a comeback. The Minutemen would escape when Phommachanh knelt to run the clock out, giving the Minutemen their first bowl game victory in school history.

Coach Xavier declines Memphis' HC offer, re-ups with UMass

AMHERST, MA -- A year ago, head coach Don Brown took a chance on a former offensive assistant from his previous position at the University of Michigan. He was a wash-out as a player due to injury, and after Coach Brown moved on from Michigan, he returned to his native state of Florida and became one of the most sought-after high school coaches in the country.

Coach James Xavier changed the UMass offense overnight, rebounding a 3-9 Independent university into an 8-5 success off the heels of their first Bowl victory in school history, on the verge of joining the MAC conference next season.

As expected, the offers flooded in, with Coach Xavier entertaining the notion of taking over his own program and riding off the success of his debut collegiate season. After reportedly interviewing with the University of Memphis for their empty head coach position, the offensive coordinator has confirmed a contract extension with the University of Massachusetts, returning for four more seasons.

"I'm the type of man that keeps his promises," commented Coach James Xavier in a post made online through his official Twitter account. "I promised Coach [Don Brown] and the young men that gave their all last season that I would lead them to success, and we're not finished what we started. I'll be back."

Coach Xavier had been silent about his interest in coaching his own squad, but insiders have reported that he is waiting for the right fit, particularly waiting to see if his alma mater, the Michigan Wolverines, open up a position for him to take over after a rather lacklustre season under Sherrone Moore that saw them fall out of the Top 25. Or, possibly a position in his home state of Florida.

For now, James Xavier will be returning to continue building with the Minutemen.
