Yeah, this was a rough one. Lots of losses to Rutgers but we’re going to try and cook in the transfer portal

Keeney-James, Phommachanh leads list of Minutemen departures

AMHERST, MA -- The UMass Minutemen will be doing much retooling ahead of an expected return to normalcy next season, facing an exodus of outgoing seniors. The team has suffered numerous losses with an extensive graduating class, headed by star receiver Jakobie Keeney-James, senior quarterback Taisun Phommachanh, and a few players heading into the transfer portal, looking for greener pastures.

Keeny-James, an NFL hopeful, led the Minutemen in receiving yards and touchdowns with an impressive 1,170 yards and 15 touchdowns, including an impressive three-touchdown performance in the Minutemen's historic First Responder Bowl victory over Florida Atlantic. He was often a safety blanket for the Minutemen offense and finished second on the team in receptions, only two behind returning wide receiver T.Y. Harding's 70 catches.

The team will be losing most of its offensive line to graduation, including left tackle Brayden Rohme and right guard Ethan Mottinger. They are hopeful to pull in some prospects from the transfer portal after not reeling in too many high-level offensive linemen who can slot in their freshman year. They didn't have the most offensive line depth to begin with.

The team also loses two of their defensive captains, including strong safety Te'Rai Powell and edge rusher Etinosa Reuben, not to mention number one corner, Arsheen Jiles. Depth takes a slight hit all around with the likes of wide receiver Keshawn Brown, safety Steven Ortiz, and middle linebacker Tyler Martin - all expected to have expanded roles in their respective positions next season - all hopped into the portal.

Let's hope some of these 1 stars can develop into solid players down the road. Next season might be a tough challenge.
