Texas Longhorns 2036 Season Preview

Austin, TX. - “Alright, alright, alright!” hollered Matthew McConaughey as another deep shot was completed from redshirt junior Maurice Uwazurike to wideout Miguel Jerman—a connection that became routine during Texas spring practices leading up to the annual Orange and White Game, where the new QB/WR duo lit up the scoreboard for the first-team offense.

What was shaping up to be a potential quarterback controversy between Uwazurike and Darryl Ekanem quickly fizzled as Uwazurike showcased not only his arm talent but also his athleticism. He scrambled effectively and, more importantly, displayed clear chemistry with his receivers—especially Jerman, Texas’s leading receiver in 2035, and rising standout Prince Oluokun.

“I think it’s safe to say we’ve made a decision about who’s taking the field Week 1 against USC,” said second-year offensive coordinator Colt McCoy, glancing over at head coach Nash Savage, who simply nodded his approval.

“That’s not to say Darryl hasn’t put in the work this offseason,” Savage added. “But with where we want our passing game to be—a much more dangerous version than last season—Mo is the guy. His deep touch, his timing with receivers, they’re just in sync.”

Savage also made it clear that Ekanem’s story is far from over.

“I already spoke with Darryl. Just because this opportunity isn’t his right now doesn’t mean there won’t be others,” he said. “I didn’t need to remind him, but I’ll remind y’all—I won my first championship at Syracuse with our backup after Dennis Seri struggled with turnovers late in the season. It’s a long year. He just has to stay ready.”

While the much-anticipated, ultimately one-sided QB battle dominated spring headlines, it wasn’t the only storyline in Austin.

Redshirt freshman Prince Oluokun has turned heads in his second year on campus. The former 4-star recruit added 20 pounds of muscle and has thrived working the middle of the field, complementing Jerman’s deep-threat ability.

“You can’t say enough about the work PO’s put in,” said McCoy. “He bulked up, and it’s paid off. He’s taking big hits, hanging onto the ball—doing all the tough work over the middle that will ultimately open up the offense."

After last year’s run-heavy offense led by dual-threat Stephen Sharga and electric RB Marquis Pettis, it’s clear Texas is shifting back toward Savage’s pass-first roots.

“You noticed that, huh?” Savage said with a laugh when asked about the increase in passing during the spring game. “Look, the skill of a good coach is adapting to his players. Sharga was a weapon—but sitting him in the pocket and asking him to bomb it was a waste of his God given talents.

“Mo’s different. He’s got some wiggle, but his biggest asset is his arm. Based on what we’ve seen this spring, we expect a major leap in the passing game.”

As the offense takes shape and looks poised to become one of the most dangerous units in the country, pressure now shifts to second-year defensive coordinator Quincey Lincoln to shore up a defense that struggled with explosive plays.

“It was no secret what our Achilles’ heel was last year,” said Lincoln, in his fourth year overall as DC and second at Texas. “We’d get a team into 3rd and long, then give up a huge play—over the top, or a simple swing route we couldn’t tackle.”

The solution? Turnover—in both personnel and positions. Texas brought in seven new defensive backs between high school and the transfer portal, four safeties and three corners. Meanwhile, former safeties George Rubio and Jarrad Frank have moved to corner, while Jayden Singleton made the opposite switch, a move Lincoln reportedly hopes will improve coverage on the back end and reduce the deep touchdowns that plagued Texas last year.

Despite secondary struggles, the Longhorns finished top 10 nationally in sacks last season—and return leading pass rusher LB Miguel Giuliano. One new name to watch is true freshman DE James Mosely, who’s already earning snaps in spring pass-rush packages and is expected to have a major impact this fall.

After a brutal start to 2035—playing 7 of their first 8 games against Top 25 opponents—Texas’s 2036 slate looks much more manageable. The #1 team in the country, according to pre-season rankings, will open the season in the Duke's Mayo Kickoff Classic against No. 11 USC, then enjoy four straight home games. That stretch includes a long-awaited rivalry renewal with No. 10 Nebraska, a visit from Miami, and SEC openers vs. Kentucky (5–7) and No. 22 Tennessee (8–5).

The second half gets tougher, with back-to-back clashes against No. 3 Oklahoma and perennial power Alabama. They’ll also host Ole Miss—the only SEC team to beat them in 2035—for an early Senior Night, before closing with road trips to Texas A&M and LSU.

“If the quarterback play lives up to the standard of a vintage Nash Savage offense, this is a team that can absolutely win 10 games and reach the SEC title game again,” said Kirk Herbstreit during ESPN’s Season Preview. “But if they start playing musical chairs at QB, it could look a lot like Savage’s final year at Georgia—three different guys trying to take the reins.”

Ball State Cardinals 2036 Season Preview

Muncie, IN. - Five starters on offense. Three on defense. That’s all that remains from the 2035 Ball State Cardinals team that secured only the third three-peat in college football history.

Now, a new group of Cardinals will have the chance to etch their names into Muncie lore as they chase immortality — attempting to join the 2029–2032 Syracuse Orange as the only program to complete a four-peat.

At the start of spring camp, head coach Kadin Semonza — who served as the offensive coordinator for that legendary Syracuse squad — brought in a pair of former players to speak on the unique challenge ahead.

“If you thought the target on your back was big last year — or the year before — you’re in for a rude awakening,” warned Immanuel Hendrix, the iconic former Orange quarterback who went 47–1 in his college career. “They’re not just trying to beat you now. They want to embarrass you. ESPN highlight-reel type stuff. Every week.”

“Every game gets tighter, every mistake louder,” added his former teammate Dalton Wear. “If you don’t look crisp on a random Saturday in October, you’re gonna hear about it — from the fans, the media, everyone.”

Asked how they handled the pressure of chasing history — twice — the duo kept it simple.

“Do. Your. Job.”

Let everything else take care of itself.

That’s been Coach Semonza’s message all spring: this team can’t try to replicate the greatness of years past — they have to carve out their own identity.

Sure, Juan Franco may be the name every fan remembers — the two-time Heisman runner-up who led Ball State to back-to-back national titles — but he’s far from the only void left behind on an offense that finished No. 1 in the nation two years running. Just 148 career receptions return in the WR room — and 57 of those came from 2035 John Mackey Award winner Franklin Walters.

“I wouldn’t say the cupboard is bare,” Semonza clarified during spring. “There’s a ton of talent in that wide receiver room. It just needs some seasoning.”

And to spice things up, Semonza turned to one of his most intriguing new weapons — 5-star freshman quarterback Karlos Farris — and moved him to wide receiver.

“Coach was slick with it,” Farris laughed, speaking after torching the first-team defense for 150 yards and three touchdowns in the spring game. “He brought me into his office and asked how I’d feel about making an immediate impact. I thought he meant short-yardage packages, like Tebow at Florida. This? This is different.”

A track star and multi-sport athlete in high school, Farris has made the transition look seamless — and if early returns hold true, Semonza might have pulled off one of the most savvy moves of his young career.

“It’s incredible how fast he’s picking it up,” said former Ball State legend and NCAA receiving yards and receptions record-holder Philip Onwualu, whom Semonza brought in to mentor Farris. “He already knows the routes and timing from a QB’s perspective. But the footwork? The way he sets up defenders and manipulates their hips — it’s already next level. And with his athleticism? He may never go back to quarterback.”

While Farris stole headlines, the most intense battle of spring took place under center.

Quarterbacks Konrad Silverman and Manny Livings, both 5-star recruits who committed with the goal of being the guy, went toe-to-toe all spring.

“These two have been competing their whole lives,” Semonza said. “They’re both from Indiana, towns a hundred miles apart. They’ve faced off with High School championships on the line and both came here with the expectation to lead this program when their number was called. To say this battle’s been legendary would be an understatement.”

Asked to name a starter after both QBs excelled in the spring game, Semonza simply smirked.

“You’ll find out when Georgia does.”

The defending three-time national champions won’t keep the nation waiting long. Ball State opens the 2036 season with a heavyweight bout against 12th-ranked Georgia in the Vegas Kickoff Classic at Allegiant Stadium.

And in classic Nash Savage–era Ball State fashion, the rest of the non-conference slate is just as brutal.

After Georgia, the Cardinals return home to host 9th-ranked Oregon, then hit the road to face rival 16th-ranked Notre Dame.

The early conference slate softens briefly — with 13th-ranked Cincinnati as the lone ranked opponent before the bye — but things ramp up fast in the second half. A four-week gauntlet follows: Penn State, then back-to-back road trips to Ohio State and Michigan, capped off by a regular-season finale against new conference rival Syracuse — a potential budding rivalry with history on both sidelines.

“Ball State’s one of the hardest teams to peg this spring,” said Pat McAfee during ESPN’s season preview. “You’ve gotta trust Coach Semonza — the KING of Muncie — but the offensive weapons? It’s boom or bust.

“If Semonza’s the offensive wizard I think he is, they’ll be ridin’ that gravy train back to the Playoff. But if they misfire at quarterback or that wide receiver room doesn’t grow up fast? This could be the most frustrating season we’ve seen from Ball State in a long time.”

2036 Texas Longhorns Pre-Season Recruiting

Austin, TX. - Texas enters the 2036 recruiting cycle with minimal roster turnover—only 17 scholarship players set to graduate—leaving limited room to bring in impact talent from this year’s class.

“It just means we need to be more direct and selective with our offers,” said head coach Nash Savage. “There are a few positions we want to address. You always want to keep building depth on both lines, and if you’ve followed my career, you know I like to stock up at linebacker and corner. And generally, we’ll take at least one quarterback each cycle for depth.”

That mindset is clearly reflected on the Longhorns’ 2036 recruiting board, where all six of the 5-star prospects Texas is pursuing are either linebackers or corners—including the No. 1 overall recruit, William Montez.

“Texas going after Montez is a little surprising,” said one scout who requested anonymity. “Savage typically targets man-to-man corners, with maybe a couple slot guys mixed in. But Montez has mostly played zone. He sticks to one side, plays deep, and reacts to the throw. I haven’t seen much from him in terms of man coverage.”

While Montez might not be a textbook fit for Savage’s defensive scheme, two other top-15 prospects—Emilio Samuel (6th) and Iosefa Kukwa (14th)—are ideal for the aggressive, press-heavy style the Longhorns favor.

Of the 20 players currently on Texas’ big board, 13 are on the defensive side. But last year’s signing of five-star QB Emilio Delgado (3rd overall) hasn’t stopped Savage from continuing to pursue top quarterback talent. The Longhorns have also added Utah native Eric Stubbs to their board, reinforcing Savage’s commitment to constant competition under center.

The Longhorns have already secured two early commitments in the cycle: 3-star punter James Cooke, a local product out of Denton, and 4-star receiver Titus Hicks, the No. 23 WR in the class and another in-state talent.

Original overall. I meant to change it to spell it out and forgot. That way you can see their progression from freshman year on. I took the Motivator/Architect skill trees and it really pays off with some recruits, especially those with higher dev grades. Prince was a 75 as a true freshman and rocketed up to an 89 as a redshirt
