Longhorns Make Texas' Sized Statement In Duke's Mayo Classic

Image
The talk of the offseason may have been the revamped passing game, but Lee Vela reminded the country he's pretty good too. The redshirt junior erupted for 163 yards in the 1st half, ultimately finishing the explosive opening win with 301 yards and two touchdowns.

LEFT - Freshman James Mosely made an immediate impact for DC Quincey Lincoln; tallying two sacks in the Longhorns impressive opening week victory.
CENTER - Zac Ansah found his rhythm in the 2nd half with a pair of big plays, but it was too little too late for the Trojans.
RIGHT - Mo was feeling himself early, tossing four of his five touchdown passes in the 1st half to spark a 35-7 halftime lead.

Charlotte, NC. - The offseason chatter in Austin focused heavily on Texas’ revamped passing attack under Nash Savage in his second year at the helm. But in the season-opening Duke’s Mayo Classic, it was the ground game that stole the show, as the Longhorns bulldozed the 11th-ranked USC Trojans in a 59–28 rout.

Preseason Heisman contender Lee Vela, last year’s backup to Marquis Pettis, ran wild in the first half—racking up 163 yards en route to a jaw-dropping 301-yard performance for the redshirt junior.

Vela set the tone early with a 35-yard run that left two defenders on the turf. From there, Texas was off and running.

By the time USC fans settled into their seats at Bank of America Stadium, the Trojans were already down 14–0. Texas opened with a crisp five-play, 82-yard scoring drive, while USC followed it up with a disastrous three-and-out that netted negative ten yards. The Longhorns quickly extended the lead with a 47-yard bomb to tight end Tyler Biggs, who was inexplicably left wide open by the USC secondary.

The avalanche continued. Texas scored again on its third possession of the first quarter, burying USC in a 21–0 hole. By the end of the first frame, the Longhorns had racked up 205 total yards. USC? Zero. The Trojans managed just three passing yards and minus-three on the ground.

USC finally showed signs of life in the second quarter. They picked off QB Maurice Uwazurike and forced a quick punt on the next Texas drive. But a missed field goal nullified the momentum, and even after getting on the board with a solid eight-play touchdown drive, they immediately gave it back. Lee Vela broke loose again, this time for a 73-yard touchdown that silenced the brief roar from the USC faithful.

A stalled USC drive near midfield ended with back-to-back sacks by Texas freshman James Mosely gave the Texas offense one last opportunity. Prior to the offense taking the field, cameras caught Uwazurike in an animated exchange with offensive coordinator Colt McCoy on the sideline.

“He’s begging for one more shot with just under a minute left,” speculated Kirk Herbstreit from the booth. “And from the looks of his reaction, he didn’t get it.”

Wrong, Kirk.

Uwazurike returned to the field and promptly uncorked the best throw of the game—a perfect fade to WR Miguel Jerman, who hauled it in over the shoulder and strolled into the end zone, waving goodbye to the stunned USC fans who made the trip from California.

To their credit, USC QB Zac Ansah put up eye-popping numbers—finishing with 493 yards and four touchdowns—but every time the Trojans threatened to make it interesting, Texas slammed the door with another explosive play.

Things got heated late. Tensions boiled over following an ill-timed USC onside kick while trailing 52–28 with under two minutes to play.

“You want to throw the ball and take deep shots in the fourth quarter? Fine. That’s our job to stop you,” said Savage postgame. “But an onside kick, down four touchdowns, with two minutes left? C’mon, man.”

When asked about the animated postgame exchange with USC head coach Ryan Walters, Savage shrugged it off as a difference in philosophy.

“He didn’t like the deep shot to PO at the end. I told him not to give me the ball at midfield on an onside kick,” Savage quipped.

Regardless of the late drama, the game was a statement win for Savage and the Longhorns as they aim to build on a strong debut season in Austin—one that still fell short of the lofty expectations set by Savage’s legendary résumé.

Meanwhile, Savage’s former protégé Kadin Semonza and the Ball State Cardinals opened their season with a narrow loss—falling 35–28 to 12th-ranked Georgia in the Vegas Kickoff Classic. It marks Ball State’s second season-opening loss in three years.

Junior redshirt QB Manny Livings got the start over Konrad Silverman and delivered a mixed bag in his debut. He threw for 401 yards and three touchdowns but also tossed two costly red zone interceptions in the first half, allowing Georgia to hang around. Two more picks in the fourth quarter helped the Bulldogs mount a 25-point surge and complete the comeback over the defending three-time national champions.

Texas will return home to DKR Stadium next week for a marquee matchup against No. 9 Nebraska, marking the highly anticipated renewal of a classic rivalry.

LEFT - Miguel Jerman hauling in the 60 yard bomb that kicked off the scoring for Texas.

Austin, TX. - For the second straight game, the Texas Longhorns steamrolled their opponent on the ground behind another 300+ yard rushing performance from star running back Lee Vela.

This week’s unfortunate opponent? Former rival Nebraska — facing Texas for the first time in over a decade and likely thinking twice about renewing the series any time soon after a demoralizing 38-6 beatdown in Austin.

Just like in last week’s rout of USC, Vela opened the game with a tone-setting 26-yard run. Two plays later, Mo Uwazurike connected with Miguel Jerman on a 60-yard touchdown pass, and just like that, Texas was in control.

Jerman would go on to tally three total touchdowns — two receiving and one rushing — before Nebraska even looked like they realized the game had started. As with the USC game, Uwazurike threw a midfield interception on Texas’ fourth drive, which led to Nebraska’s only points of the first half: a pair of field goals. A 60-yard pass play set up the first, while the interception gave them just enough momentum to tack on the second.

But any hopes of a Nebraska comeback were crushed in an instant. With the Cornhuskers finally showing signs of life, Vela silenced them with an electrifying 83-yard touchdown run that sent DKR Memorial Stadium into a frenzy and gave Texas a 28-6 halftime lead. Vela finished the first half with 203 yards rushing, while Uwazurike was a precise 6-of-8 for 141 yards and two touchdowns.

The second half was more of the same: Texas controlled the clock and the trenches, rushing for another 107 yards while attempting just six more passes en route to the convincing 38-6 victory.

“It’s tough to get going when you give up eight sacks and can’t establish the run,” said a frustrated Nebraska head coach Jim Mora when asked what the offense could have done different in his post-game press conference. “So I guess… block better,” he added bluntly.

By the final whistle, Vela had compiled 30 carries for 308 yards and two scores, while Uwazurike finished an efficient 11-of-14 for 185 yards and two touchdowns.

After surrendering 493 passing yards to USC in the opener, the Longhorns’ defense looked much improved, holding Nebraska to just 180 total passing yards between two quarterbacks — with 60 of those coming on their only major breakdown of the afternoon.

“It was no secret the secondary was a huge focus all offseason — and it’s early, but the work is showing up on the field,” said defensive coordinator Quincey Lincoln postgame.

Meanwhile, freshman defensive end James Mosely continues his breakout campaign, racking up two more sacks in just his second collegiate game — one against Nebraska’s starters late in the first half and another during garbage time - bringing his season total to 4 and a half.

Texas will stay home next week as they prepare to host the 22nd ranked Miami Hurricanes in the 2nd game of their four game home stand.

In the Big Ten, Ball State bounced back from a turnover filled loss in the Vegas Kickoff Classic with a gritty 24-16 win over the previously 9th ranked Oregon Ducks. Manny Livings recovered from his up and down 1st collegiate start with a 362 yards, 3 touchdown performance while a late Oregon rally ran out of time.

LEFT - Santiago Mili running through Jayden Singleton's arm tackle on the way to his 2nd touchdown of the game to spark the 21 point Hurricanes rally.
CENTER - "PO" appeared to put the game away with a pair of touchdowns in the 3rd quarter that included this beautiful grab in the end zone.

Austin, TX. - Despite five interceptions, a blown 21-point lead, and All-American HB Lee Vela leaving the game midway through the 4th quarter, the Texas Longhorns outlasted the Miami Hurricanes 31–28 at DKR Stadium, thanks to freshman kicker Edward Jaimes drilling the game-winning 26-yard field goal with just 16 seconds remaining.

“These are the games where you learn what you’re made of,” praised head coach Nash Savage. “When things aren’t going to script, you’re beat up and soaking wet from the rain—and yet, we still came up clutch and put together a drive to win it.”

“Proud of these guys. This just galvanizes all of the hard work we put in during those long, hot summer days. It showed this team that when push comes to shove, they can push harder.”

The winning kick was especially satisfying for Texas fans, who still remember last year’s heartbreaking end to the season—when former kicker George Marciano shanked an extra point with 10 seconds left in the Orange Bowl loss to Ball State. Jaimes replaced Marciano in the spring and is already making his mark.

Both teams struggled to generate offense in the torrential downpour at DKR, with both QBs throwing two interceptions in the first half. Miami’s lone first-half touchdown came off one of those turnovers, while Texas failed to capitalize on either of theirs. Despite outgaining Miami 275–83 in the first half, the Longhorns held just a 14–7 lead—largely due to both turnovers occurring deep in Hurricane territory.

A third interception by Texas QB Maurice Uwazurike—this one in the end zone after TE Tyler Biggs fumbled a would-be touchdown—drew boos from the home crowd as Uwazurike trudged off the field. But following a quick defensive stop, “Mo” bounced back, going 3-for-3 for 41 yards on the next drive, capped off by a beautiful 13-yard back-shoulder fade to WR Prince Oluokun.

On the ensuing kickoff, a fumble recovered by Texas gave the Longhorns another opportunity—and Uwazurike again found Oluokun, this time for a 19-yard touchdown in the back corner of the end zone. Two throws, two scores, and Texas suddenly led 28–7.

But Miami QB Cortez Azumah, making just his second career start, wasn’t done. After early struggles and his own pair of picks, Azumah led a quick strike: completions of 4, 26, and 58 yards—the last going to Santiago Mili, who ran through two tackles on his way to the end zone.

After a pair of three-and-outs, Uwazurike was intercepted again—CB George Dunham jumped a route for his second pick of the day and took it 34 yards to the house, cutting the lead to 28–21.

With the 21-point lead nearly gone, Texas leaned on Lee Vela to grind out the clock. But the plan derailed when Vela came up clutching his shoulder midway through the drive and did not return. Earl Petty, who had opened the game with a touchdown run, helped extend the possession, but the drive stalled at Miami’s 17. Facing 3rd and 12, Savage trusted Uwazurike to make a smart play—either take a safe throw or set up a field goal.

Instead, a mistimed pass was tipped by the defensive line and intercepted by CB Gabriel Chamberlin, giving the Hurricanes new life with 2:44 remaining.

Azumah responded with a near-flawless drive, going 7-for-8 for 93 yards before dumping a swing pass to WR Alex Raines, who did the rest—breaking a tackle and diving into the end zone to tie the game at 28.

Miami HC Andy Avalos briefly considered going for two and the win but ultimately opted for the extra point.

“That’s a tough decision,” said Kirk Herbstreit from the booth. “Your defense is playing lights out with five interceptions, and Texas’s best player is out. But they’ve hit big plays all season. I think Avalos made the right call.”

After throwing his fifth interception earlier and watching his defense surrender the tying score, Uwazurike showed resolve. He opened the final drive with completions of 9 and 15 yards to Santiago DeCastro, then hit Miguel Jerman in stride on a post route for a 43-yard gain—setting up shop at the Miami 17.

From there, Savage played it safe. Two runs and a short flare pass drained the clock and positioned Jaimes to earn the confidence of the Longhorns faithful. The freshman calmly drilled the 26-yard kick from the left hash despite the rain.

Miami got the ball back with 13 seconds and no timeouts. After two incompletions, QB Cortez Azumah hit WR Junior Carruthers on a short crosser. Carruthers weaved through defenders for 41 yards, but was finally dragged down as time expired.

After the game, Savage was vague on Vela’s status: “He was in a lot of pain when he left the field. I haven’t spoken to the medical staff, but I’d assume he’s out for at least next week.”

Asked about his confidence in Uwazurike after the five-pick game, Savage didn’t flinch. “He’s not the first QB to have a bad game, and he won’t be the last. He put all of that aside and came through when his team needed him. If that doesn’t give you confidence, I don’t know what will.”

Texas will stay at home next week to open conference play against the Kentucky Wildcats (1-0).

Elsewhere Ball State narrowly avoided a 1–2 start—the worst under HC Kadin Semonza—by storming back from a 24–7 third-quarter deficit to stun #12 Notre Dame 35–24 in South Bend. QB Manny Livings continued his high-risk, high-reward campaign, tossing three first-half interceptions before bouncing back with five touchdown passes.

Converted quarterback Karlos Farris had a breakout performance at wide receiver, hauling in nine catches for 188 yards and four touchdowns—including a pair of highlight-reel grabs that showed the 5-star prospect is adapting quickly to his new position.
