UMass survives near-collapse in first ranked game, slide past Broncos thanks to Hester

The now-ranked UMass Minutemen continue their march towards an unprecedented undefeated season, sliding past the Western Michigan Broncos on the road, this time by a score of 35-28. A late fourth quarter score from star running back C.J. Hester - one of his three on the day - managed to push them to the winner’s circle despite a ferocious comeback effort from Broncos quarterback Broc Lowry.

Minutemen quarterback Ahmad Haston took a backseat to the running game despite throwing for 184 passing yards and two scores; both to Jacquon Gibson. Hester took over the game after a remarkable effort last weekend. He carried the football 30 times to the tune of 190 yards on the ground and three scores. This includes two in the second quarter - one in which he ripped off a 62-yard sprint with time expiring to finish the first half.

“He plays like a superstar,” commented head coach Don Brown in a tension-filled press conference with many question denials. “He wants the respect of a top running back in the nation and every game he plays, he plays more and more like one.”

The elephant in the room was the release of an audio file during the pre-season that has gone viral of Brown speaking negatively on star offensive coordinator James Xavier. Xavier was made unavailable for comment in the pre-game presser as well as the post-game press conference. The team remains without comment on the event, with Brown dodging as many questions from the press as possible.

Xavier was absent from the sideline, this time deciding to call plays from the booth along with defensive coordinator Jared Keyte. There have been rumors swirling that Keyte, featuring an ever-improving defense for UMass, was also in the audio clip disparaging Xavier, but there rumors have remained largely unfounded.

UMass moves to 7-0 and 6-0 in the MAC conference, which has pushed them to being ranked #25 in the country in the polls. The team returns home to play their game of the season, facing off against number five ranked NC State.

Recruitment troubles continue as Keke "Money" Gee opts for Syracuse

AMHERST, MA -- The rumored "Cold War" that is happening on the UMass coaching staff is starting to have lasting effects on the recruiting trail.

The Minutemen, despite now being a nationally-ranked team, have suffered numerous losses on the recruiting trail. Some recruits have cited unease in the coaching staff as the reason to seek greener pastures. The dissolution of a once-promising recruitment board has sailed away, starting with the number one offensive guard in the nation, Lamarcus Prall, opting to leave home for Syracuse.

Now, another four-star recruit the Minutemen were gambling on going heavy for has decided to join Prall and play for the Orange next year. Wide receiver Keke "Money" Gee out of Needham, Massachusetts as announced that he is closing his recruitment and verbally committed to Syracuse. Stability in the coaching staff was a priority as well as the ability to play in his first year. Gee, a 5-foot-8 speedster who has gotten comparisons to former college superstar, West Virginia's Tavon Austin, was disappointed in the turmoil at Amherst.

"I rocked with Coach Xavier, he talked to me like a real man and didn't promise me anything he wasn't going to be able to back up once I got on campus," Gee said in an Instagram Live he opened up shortly after his commitment went live. "But, it don't feel like he's going to be there long, and I wasn't rocking with Coach Brown like I was Coach X."

Joining Gee and Prall is moving away from the hype train that is UMass is four-star offensive guard Steven Sweat, also out of Massachusetts, also opting to join Syracuse.

It hasn't all been fire and brimstone, as the Minutemen have gotten the commitment of three-star wide receiver Taylor Bohannon out of Camden, New Jersey. At 6-foot-1 and 183 pounds, Bohannon brings speed and excellent football IQ to a squad that has made intelligence and being in the right place at the right time an integral feature for recruits.

The team remains in on quarterbacks Zach Hoffman and Keke Iwuchukwu, four-star tight end J.J. Cheek, and edge rusher Jaden Jefferson.

They aren't being updated since I'm trying to get through a few more seasons before CFB 26 drops. The story thickens.
