RIGHT - Florida's defense entered the contest with a lone interception, but exited with triple that amount after snagging 3 more from Uwazurike, who now leads the FBS with 12 interceptions.

Gainesville, FL. - It looked like another blowout was brewing for the top-ranked Texas Longhorns after jumping out to a 14–0 lead early in the second quarter in Gainesville. The offense came out firing—minus one early interception—and the defense had already piled up three sacks by the midway point of the second frame.

But instead of a rout, fans at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium witnessed an old-school SEC slugfest. In the end, it was a fourth-quarter touchdown pass from Maurice Uwazurike that made the difference, as Texas held on for a gritty 28–21 win over Florida.

Texas put up 21 points in the first half but found scoring much tougher after the break. The Gators’ defense clamped down, forcing two second-half interceptions, recording three of their four total sacks, and even blocking a punt after forcing a quick three-and-out to open the third quarter.

Not to be outdone, Texas’ defense delivered seven sacks—four in the second half—and added two interceptions of their own to help keep the game within reach until Uwazurike could deliver the game-winning strike.

“Disappointing,” admitted head coach Nash Savage when asked about Uwazurike’s continued struggles with turnovers. The junior quarterback now leads the FBS with 12 interceptions. “That’s the nature of throwing the ball. Sometimes you feel good about a throw and it bounces the wrong way. But kudos to the guys—they rallied when it mattered. The defense kept us in it. They’re the real MVPs of this game.”

The Longhorns’ defense stood tall late, shutting down Florida on back-to-back possessions after regaining the lead. The Gators appeared poised to mount one final drive with 4:24 to play, but a sack on 3rd-and-1 left head coach Mike Bloomgreen with a decision—and he opted to punt with 3:51 remaining.

“Outside of that touchdown drive to start the fourth, we’d held them the whole second half,” said Bloomgreen. “I felt confident our guys would make a stop and give us one last shot—maybe even with good field position. But apparently I was wrong.”

Texas never gave the ball back. The Longhorns bled the final 3:51 off the clock with a cold-blooded, clock-chewing drive that included three third-down conversions, closing out the game and silencing the Gator faithful.

With seven more sacks added to their total, the Longhorns now have 37 through six games under second-year defensive coordinator Quincey Lincoln—putting them on pace to demolish Ohio State’s FBS single-season record of 63 sacks.

“We’re not counting the numbers,” said junior linebacker Miguel Giuliano, who is tied for the team lead with seven sacks. “We’re just having fun, making sure we’ve got each other’s backs. If one guy misses, we expect the next guy to get there.”

Former Savage protégé Kadin Semonza has Ball State rolling after a shaky Week 1. The Cardinals crushed Cincinnati 48–14 behind another stellar outing from Manny Livings, who now leads the FBS with 24 passing touchdowns through six games.

Texas will now turn its attention to longtime rival Oklahoma, who snapped a four-game losing streak with a dramatic 39–37 double-overtime win over previously unbeaten Georgia in Week 6. The Red River Shootout awaits.

Longhorns Land #1 In-state Recruit CB Emilio Samuel



Austin, TX. - The Texas Longhorns are on a roll—and not just on Saturdays. The momentum continues on the recruiting trail as the Horns landed three major commitments for the 2036 cycle, headlined by the top prospect in the Lone Star State: 5-star cornerback Emilio Samuel, the No. 6 overall player in the nation.

“Hook ’em, baby,” Samuel said with a grin as he picked up the burnt orange cap, spurning the Duke Blue Devils and TCU Horned Frogs, who finished a distant second and third in his recruitment.

When asked why he chose Texas, the North Shore standout didn’t hesitate.

“Look at what they’re doing this year and what Coach Savage has done over his career. He’s always had defenses that load the box and trust corners to win 1-on-1 outside,” Samuel said. “I’m the best man coverage corner in this class. That’s what I do. I can't think of a better place to put my elite skills to the test.”

Samuel won’t be heading to Austin alone—he’ll be joined by his high school teammate, 4-star edge rusher Denzel Bayer (No. 361 nationally), and D’Andre Rheem, an athletic and hard-hitting middle linebacker ranked No. 110 overall.

“This is what Coach Savage does,” said ESPN’s Tom Luginbill. “He prioritizes elite athletes at linebacker and shutdown corners. It’s a formula he’s stuck to—and it works.”

The trio’s commitment comes just two weeks after 5-star linebacker Miles Wilcox (No. 12 overall) also pledged to Texas. With the Longhorns already fielding one of the most disruptive front sevens in college football, it’s clear the defensive arms race in Austin isn’t slowing down any time soon.

And the class could get even stronger.

Texas remains in a slim but steady lead for William Montez, the No. 1 overall prospect in the country, who has yet to announce his top three. The Longhorns are currently battling with San Jose State and USC for the elite corner’s services.

Meanwhile, 5-star targets Tyree Winbush (LB) and Iosefa Kukwa (CB) have both narrowed their decisions to a final three, with Texas firmly in the lead for each.
