Tuscaloosa, AL. - In a game defined by momentum swings, it was the Texas Longhorns who landed the final haymaker, ripping off a 28–3 run between the third and fourth quarters to bury the Alabama Crimson Tide in a 56–38 victory. With the win, Texas improved to 8–0 for the second consecutive season under Head Coach Nash Savage, while Alabama fell to 3–3, likely sealing their third straight year without an SEC Championship Game appearance.

Texas came out firing behind a sharp opening from Maurice “Mo” Uwazurike, who went 3-for-3 for 80 yards on the first drive, capping it with a 45-yard touchdown strike to tight end Tyler Biggs. Alabama looked poised to answer, but quarterback Viliami Cherry’s first incompletion turned disastrous—a fluttering throw that cornerback James Montanez snatched out of the air and returned 67 yards for a pick-six and a stunning 14–0 Texas lead.

To their credit, Alabama punched back like Nick Saban was still pacing the sidelines. Cherry rebounded with a 38-yard touchdown pass, then scrambled in a score on the next drive after the Tide defense forced a quick Texas three-and-out. Then came the swing: Alabama safety Tyler Rugamba baited Uwazurike into a slant throw, broke on the route, and took the interception 97 yards to the house for a 21–14 lead—part of a 21–0 run by the Crimson Tide.

But Texas responded with a flurry of its own. Uwazurike led back-to-back touchdown drives in the final four minutes of the half—helped by a three-and-out forced by the Texas defense—to reclaim a 28–21 lead at the break.

The second half began sluggish for both offenses, with sacks forcing early punts. Alabama broke through first, with Cherry hitting Dylan Thorne twice—once for 18 yards and again for 24 and a touchdown—to knot the game at 28–28.

Uwazurike wasted no time answering, finding Miguel Jerman on a 58-yard bomb as the junior wideout torched the Alabama secondary to restore the lead. After a rare Texas sack forced a 47-yard Alabama field goal, Texas clung to a 35–31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

That’s when the Longhorns’ defense slammed the door.

Facing 3rd-and-13, Cherry took a punishing sack that led to Alabama settling for the field goal. Sensing an opportunity to finally pull away, Texas dialed up a few run plays to loosen up the Tide defense before Uwazurike uncorked a 47-yard missile to Prince Oluokon for a back-breaking touchdown and a 42–31 lead.

With just over five minutes remaining, Cherry was forced to press—and it unraveled fast. His next throw sailed high, landing in the arms of safety Jayden Singleton, who tiptoed up the sideline for another Texas defensive touchdown. Then, on the following drive, a mistimed throw behind his receiver was easily intercepted by cornerback Prince Hooey—Texas’ third pick-six of the night.

Dylan Thorne would tack on a late touchdown for Alabama, muscling through defenders to make it 56–38, but by then the game had long been decided.

Despite the win for the Longhorns, the path forward won’t get easier. Prior to kickoff, Ole Miss knocked off Georgia 35–27 in Oxford, pushing the Rebels to 3–0 in SEC play and putting pressure on Texas to keep pace in the championship race.

“The pedal is still down, and the engine’s running hot,” Savage said when informed of the Ole Miss result. “We’d much rather control our own destiny when it comes to the SEC title and playoff seeding. And to do that, we’ve got to keep doing what we do best.
