Austin, TX. - Texas avenged its only regular-season loss from the 2035 campaign with a dramatic 31–28 win over previously 2nd ranked Ole Miss, moving one step closer to another SEC Championship Game berth under head coach Nash Savage.
The Longhorns defense came out firing, racking up three sacks in the first quarter—including a strip sack by LB Miguel Giuliano that freshman standout James Mosely returned for a touchdown. Despite the defensive dominance, the Texas offense sputtered early, allowing Ole Miss to gradually wear down the Horns’ front.
The Rebels actually outgained Texas 111–40 in the opening quarter, yet trailed 7–0 thanks to the scoop-and-score. Momentum flipped quickly after Maurice Uwazurike’s second interception of the quarter set up Nick Swift’s 7-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game. Texas answered with a grinding 14-play, 68-yard drive, but had to settle for a 28-yard field goal and a 10–7 lead.
Then Ole Miss struck. WR Theodore Blatchford torched the Texas secondary for a 50-yard touchdown, and Uwazurike’s third pick of the half was returned 44 yards to the house by CB Terry Ferguson, giving Ole Miss a 21–10 lead with just 44 seconds left in the half.
“We just need two, guys,” Uwazurike told his offense in the huddle. “One drive at a time and we’re right back in it.”
True to his calm, steady nature, Uwazurike led a surgical final-minute drive. A 14-yard scramble set the tone before a 13-yard strike to Miguel Jerman moved the chains. With three seconds left, Uwazurike lofted a perfect 45-yard deep ball to Andre Mond, who hauled it in over Ferguson and toe-tapped in the end zone to bring Texas within 21–17 at the break.
Coming out of halftime, the senior QB stayed hot, going 4-for-4 for 84 yards on the opening drive and capping it with a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line to give Texas a 24–21 lead.
But Ole Miss didn’t flinch. QB Telvin McCracken led a patient 12-play, 85-yard drive that chewed up six minutes of clock before RB Enrique Rosas sliced through the defense to reclaim the lead, 28–24.
Once again trailing, Texas leaned on the surprise return of star RB Lee Vela, who was expected to miss the remainder of the regular season with a broken collarbone. After setting up the drive with a series of punishing runs, Uwazurike connected with Jerman for a 48-yard bomb. On the next play, Jerman took a swing pass, evaded two defenders, then leapt over a third at the goal line, cartwheeling in for a highlight-reel 10-yard touchdown to make it 31–28.
McCracken again showed poise on what looked like another promising 12-play drive, but facing 3rd and 10, Ole Miss opted for a conservative call.
“We were well within field goal range,” said the Rebels head coach Mike Gundy postgame. “TMC [McCracken] was sharp, but you never know how a third-and-long goes. Hindsight is 20/20, obviously.”
The call was a draw play to Rosas, but LB Sateki Cumming stood him up just long enough for MLB Marvin Pitts to punch out the ball. CB Juan Ventura pounced on the fumble, ending the Rebels’ last real threat. With 3:34 remaining, Texas ran out the clock, even declining a chance to score again after reaching the Ole Miss 1-yard line in the closing seconds.
Vela, still shaking off the rust, finished with 108 yards on 18 carries in his emotional return.
Though the Longhorns handed Ole Miss its first conference loss, the SEC Southwest is still undecided. One more Texas win—or another Ole Miss loss—will secure a second straight SEC title game appearance for Savage and company.
In the Big Ten, Ball State pulled off a miracle comeback of their own, rallying from a 28–7 deficit to stun No. 4 Ohio State 31–28. Manny Livings, who had a dismal first half (4/11, 63 yards, INT, lost fumble), caught fire in the second. He went 19/24 with three touchdown passes after the break, including the game-winner to—you guessed it—Karlos Farris. The freshman phenom continues to strengthen his Heisman case as the Cardinals remain perfect in conference play.
