I can't believe how decimated their roster is. They were upper tier in the Big 12 so I moved them back to the SEC, but they've had a worse fallback than LeBron's hariline. If this was going longer then they'd get moved back to the Big 12, but this is either the last season or the 2nd to last with 26 coming out so they'll just have to suffer.

Good afternoon, Longhorn Nation, and welcome back to The Horn Report, your home for all things Texas athletics right here at The Daily Texan. I’m your host Mateo Rios, and joining us today is a man who needs no introduction—head coach Nash Savage. Coach, always a pleasure.

Nash Savage:
Appreciate you, Mateo. Always happy to sit down with y’all and talk ball.

MR:
First off—congrats on another statement win over Texas A&M. You’re now 11-0, 23-3 overall in your first two seasons, and Texas has clinched a second straight trip to the SEC Championship Game—the first time that’s happened since the Horns joined the SEC in 2025. That’s got to feel pretty good, right?

NS:
It’s a good milestone, no doubt—but we’re not done. I didn’t come to Texas to win regular season games. I came to win conference titles. National Championships. We came up short last year, and I’m not in the habit of falling short twice.

MR:
Standing in your way again? Your old squad—the Georgia Bulldogs. Any thoughts heading into that matchup?

NS:
It’s a testament to the work we did while I was there. I was only in Athens two years, but you look at that roster—plenty of guys I recruited, plenty I helped develop. They’re talented. They’re well-coached. But so are we.

MR:
So… no personal rivalry between you and Coach Jay Sawvel just yet?

NS:
Rivalries are built on battles. Wins and losses. Right now, Georgia’s gotten the better of us since I left. One game or not, until we even the score, it’s just competition—fierce competition—but not a rivalry. Yet.

MR:
Let’s talk about the upcoming game against LSU. With a conference title game already locked in, are you planning to rest starters?

NS:
Can’t confirm or deny anything just yet, Mateo. Starters will be out there to begin the game, that’s for sure. But we’ve got some guys banged up, others working their way back. If we get ahead early, you might see some fresh faces. But if it turns into a four-quarter dogfight? You’ll see our best out there until the clock hits zero. We’re not giving away any games.

MR:
If the game goes that way, any chance we get one more look at Emilio Delgado this season?

NS:
He’s still got one game left before we burn the redshirt, so yeah—I’d say it’s a good bet if the opportunity’s there. He’s shown real poise in both appearances this season, and let’s not forget—he faced first-string defenses both times. We like what we’ve seen and the more he gets to develop this season, the better position he will be in next year.

MR:
So next season—Mo graduates, and that QB1 spot opens up. Is it Emilio’s job to lose, or is the incumbent Darryl Ekanem the frontrunner?

NS:
Every job on this team is earned, not given. Obviously Mo’s the guy right now—he’s earned that. But he's graduating at years end, so once spring rolls around? It’s a clean slate. If you make plays, you see the field. That’s always been our standard.

MR:
Let’s shift to your staff. You’ve seen a few assistants move up to head coaching gigs over the years, but no one’s blown up quite like Kadin Semonza has at Ball State. Now both of your current coordinators, Colt McCoy and Quincey Lincoln, are being mentioned as future head coaches. Do you think they’re next in line to follow Kadin’s path?

NS:
It’s tough to predict, Mateo. Every coach walks into a different situation. Tommy Reese had to win right away at Michigan. Joe Bob Clements took time at Michigan State but got them to two straight semifinals. Kadin landed in the perfect spot—a familiar program, a built-out roster, and they wanted him. Colt and Quincey are both stars in the making. I just hope I get to keep them in burnt orange a little while longer.

MR:
Speaking of Quincey—your defense is flirting with historic sack numbers this season. And it’s not just one guy doing the damage. What makes this unit different than, say, those Syracuse defenses you had led by all-time sack king Jason Veasy?

NS:
Jason was a freak—no question. They didn’t call him “Easy Veasy” for nothing. He made the game look effortless. But I see flashes of that same spark in James Mosely. He’s been lethal in pass rush with limited reps, and once he gets a full offseason under his belt? Look out. But what separates this group is the balance—D-linemen, linebackers, safeties—everyone’s getting home. When you scheme pressure from all angles and have this much talent? You’re going to make offenses miserable. I’m just glad I don’t have to game-plan against us.

MR:
Let’s flip to the offense. You’ve had a top-tier rushing attack all season, even with Lee Vela missing time. At one point, he and Earl Petty were 1–2 nationally in rushing yards. With Vela still working back to form, how are you managing that rotation?

NS:
It’s a good problem to have. Vela’s ahead of schedule, and now it’s just about getting his legs back under him. Was he the same guy pre-injury? No—he was on a Heisman-level tear. But he’s still a reliable, three-down back, and Earl has more than proven he can carry the load. That’s the benefit of building depth—we don’t skip a beat.

MR:
Alright, before we go pay some bills and hit the commercial break—any thoughts on the incoming recruiting class? You’re sitting fifth nationally right now.

NS:
We’re fired up about this group. We’ve got real playmakers coming in—William Montez, Tyrone Maddox, Eric Stubbs. And don’t sleep on the guys the “experts” overlook. We’ve got dudes with real speed, real instincts, and a chip on their shoulder. We’re still chasing two big names—Paul Mayden and Junior Rhea. If we land them? We’re in a great spot heading into spring.

MR:

Baton Rouge, LA. - It wasn’t the fireworks show some Longhorn fans hoped for, but Texas closed out the 2036 regular season with a clinical and commanding 38-17 victory over LSU. While the Tigers managed a pair of late touchdowns to make the score more respectable, the game was never in doubt—Texas looked every bit the focused, title-chasing powerhouse they’ve been all year.

“It’s great, but not what we’re here to accomplish,” said quarterback Maurice Uwazurike postgame when asked about the undefeated regular season.
“Not to sound corny, but we’re on that Kobe mentality. Job’s not finished—and until it is, we’re not letting up.”

Texas jumped out to a 17-0 lead at halftime, fueled by two touchdown drives in the second quarter and a defense that bent but never broke. LSU quarterback Brian McCardell made some plays, but every spark was quickly snuffed out by a swarming Texas defense that racked up four interceptions before giving way to the reserves in the fourth quarter.

As promised on The Horn Report earlier this week, head coach Nash Savage turned to freshman QB Emilio Delgado and the second-team offense in the final frame. Delgado, as he has in previous outings, showed a mix of potential and growing pains—he was stripped for a fumble while rolling out but bounced back with a gorgeous post-route dime to Rico Mama for a touchdown that iced the game.

Running back Lee Vela continued to shake off rust from his broken collarbone, finishing with 88 yards on the ground and 40 more receiving. Earl Petty chipped in another 61 yards in relief.

Now 12-0, Texas enters the bye week with a chance to heal and regroup before a highly anticipated SEC Championship Game rematch with Georgia—looking to avenge last season’s narrow 28-23 loss.

Meanwhile, Ball State continued its march toward a fourth consecutive national title with a 42-17 snow-drenched win over Michigan State in East Lansing. The Cardinals flipped the script from their usual aerial assault, pounding out 337 rushing yards to bulldoze their way one step closer to another Big Ten crown.


Despite throwing for nearly 400 yards, LSU QB Brian McCardell was plagued by four interceptions, all of which came on the Longhorns side of the field.
