Coach James Xavier makes the move, tapped as new head of Virginia football

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- The University of Virginia has announced that UMass offensive coordinator James Xavier will be their next head football coach, spelling the end of what has been tabbed as “the James Xavier Sweepstakes”.

He has reportedly signed a three-year contract that makes him the fifth-highest paid coach in the conference, behind Clemson's Dabo Swinney, Boston College's Bill O'Brien, Miami's Mario Cristobal, and North Carolina's Bill Belichick.

Xavier, 36-years-old out of Hollywood, Florida, reportedly interviewed with Kentucky and Syracuse virtually while preparing for UMass' MAC championship game against Miami University. He also was rumored to have had a conversation with Boston College head coach Bill O'Brien about potentially taking over their vacant offensive coordinator position. Though the lateral move would seem unsavory compared to taking on a head coaching position, Xavier has been on the record as always having wanted to work with the former NFL boss.

Virginia, having lost incumbent head coach Tony Elliott to becoming the offensive coordinator at the University of Michigan, came into the picture shortly after UMass' loss to Georgia in the first round of College Football playoff and reportedly swept Xavier off his feet.

Virginia finished with a record of 6-6, finishing 15th in the ACC, only ahead of SMU, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Louisville, and Syracuse. They finished 3-5 in conference play and ended the season on a three-game losing streak that saw the collapse of their season.

They are hoping that Xavier and the staff he manages to piece together will be the answer.

"It feels like home," commented Xavier from a phone interview. "It feels like the right move for my family. The community that they introduced me to, it made me feel like I was right where I belong. I always wanted to go somewhere I can see myself retiring, and Virginia feels like that school for me."

"The control their preparing on giving him rivals that of some of the biggest bosses in college football," an insider around the deal reported. "They want him to have the creative freedom and direction he never got at UMass. It's a type of control you don't typically see for a first-time head coach."

"I'm ready to institute a new wave of how football can be coached. We want to raise the culture here and no longer exist in the background. Bringing Virginia into being a powerhouse in college sports is what I'm here to do. It will get done."

Xavier just finished his second season as the offensive coordinator at the University of Massachusetts, prompting a seismic shift at Amherst. His first season featured the team finishing as a nationally ranked offense and winning their first ever Bowl game, defeating Florida Atlantic University.

Xavier was heavily rumored to be leaving at the end of the season due to the controversial audio leak that featured head coach Don Brown disparaging Xavier with other members of the staff. Xavier, always found on the sideline, made his way upstairs and coached from the booth for the remainder of the season, and refused to speak to the media for the better part of a month until just before the MAC championship game.

“These past two years has been a blessing for me, and I’ll always be eternally grateful to everyone here on campus that grew with me here. We accomplished some amazing things here and a part of me will always be here with UMass.” he said in letter posted to his social media accounts. “It didn’t end the way we wanted to, and I’ll always be sorry for that, but sometimes, you have to know when to hold them, and know when to fold them. It’s time to move on."

would like to say the Georgia loss was surprising....but we all knew it wasn't. Too much NFL talent to overcome. I had the same experience with Ball State against Alabama in my 2nd year there

Virginia is a solid move. Good recruiting base, winnable conference. Either a place that is a nice stepping stone, or a program you can turn into a perennial ACC contender in more than just basketball
