would like to say the Georgia loss was surprising....but we all knew it wasn't. Too much NFL talent to overcome. I had the same experience with Ball State against Alabama in my 2nd year there

Virginia is a solid move. Good recruiting base, winnable conference. Either a place that is a nice stepping stone, or a program you can turn into a perennial ACC contender in more than just basketball

Always feel like a gangster until a real gangster pulls up. I'm happy landing at Virginia, hopefully things go well here.

Coach James Xavier begins filling out staff, hires Slade Nagle, Brandon Fisher as coordinators

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- Professor X has begun to assemble his X-men.

It was announced in social media posts that newly acquired head football coach James Xavier has hired former Houston offensive coordinator Slade Nagle to hop on board to become his offensive coordinator at the University of Virginia. Similarly, the team has added Bowling Green defensive coordinator Brandon Fisher to handle the defense.

Nagle, a 20-year plus year coaching veteran who helped guide Tulane's resurgent offenses across eight seasons and also has experience as the special teams coach at LSU, spent a year with the Cougars overseeing their offense. Beforehand, he coached Tulane's tight ends from 2016 until 2022, in which he took over as the offensive coordinator. As OC, the Green Wave scored 20+ points in 11 of 12 regular season games and 30+ in six of them, going 8-0 in the AAC.

Known mostly for his aptitude for running the ball, Nagle is expected to bring this focus to Virginia while Coach Xavier and an incoming pass game coordinator/QB coach will work on the passing game. Having been coaching in the college ranks since 2002, having such a veteran coordinator in Xavier's first season as a head coach was integral.

"We wanted someone who has walked the walk, and can still talk the talk. Meeting him and his wife, just the vibe he gave off was someone who was open-minded and just wanted to win" commented Xavier upon news of the hiring coming to light. "He fits the mold perfectly, we could talk x's and o's for hours."

Fisher was also a one-and-done hire, only spending a season with head coach and former NFL great Eddie George at Bowling Green. He had previously spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator with George at Tennessee State before following him to Bowling Green. His defensive units at TSU had been the cornerstone of the Tigers' performance, ranking among the top in their conference consistently.

TSU's unit in 2024 allowed an average of 22.8 points per game and ranked second in the Big South with 334.9 yards allowed per game. Fisher's impact has been notable since his arrival from Auburn, where he was a defensive analyst in 2020.

Notably, Fisher is the son of former Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher, in which Brandon served as an offensive assistant in 2010 with the Titans. He would later join his father with the Rams as an assistant secondary coach for three seasons.

Fisher coached Bowling Green to the fourth-best defense in the MAC, just two slots below Xavier's Minutemen, while causing the most turnovers and accumulating the most sacks in the conference. That sort of intelligence and productivity is exactly what Virginia is looking for.

"He gave me fits trying to gameplan for him, Bowling Green was one of the team's we were looking out for all season long," he said. "Had they been a little bit more healthy when we played them, it may have been a very different story."

Coach Xavier also made one more hiring, reportedly bringing back former UMass wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James to become an offensive assistant. Keeney-James graduated from UMass at the end of last season after leading the team in most receiving categories. He retired after a cup of coffee in the NFL, attending the Detroit Lions' OTAs. He coached at his high school as the wide receivers coach but has jumped up immediately to rejoin Coach Xavier at Virginia.

"He gave me a shout and we had a long conversation about what role I could eek out with the team. He knows my mind and he knows how passionate I am about the position. I'm excited to be back in that film room at the college ranks and help make history in Charlottesville."

Star MIKE linebacker Kam Robinson hops in transfer portal, highlights departures

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- From the get-go, new head coach James Xavier and company will have their work cut out for them in the transfer portal and completing their recruiting class, because the losses are significant.

Star linebacker Kam Robinson has announced that he will hopping in the transfer portal looking for a new home. He cited that he wanted to go somewhere with the head coach "that held an emphasis on defense", and how he didn't trust the incoming regime. "I want to go somewhere led by someone with a more proven resume, not just a flash in the pan. We had a good conversation - I like the dude, trust me - but, this is my career we're talking about." Robinson was second on the team in tackles with 71 to go along with two interceptions.

Edge rusher Terrell Jones, who had 4 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks last season, also opted to head into the transfer portal as well for his final season.

The team will be losing their top four receiving targets to graduation in wide receivers Andre Greene Jr. (70 catches, 1,006 yards, 11 touchdowns), Dakota Twitty (41 catches, 604 yards, 4 touchdowns), and Elijah Metcalf (38 catches, 499 yards, 6 touchdowns) as well as tight end Karson Gay. Their number one running back, Xavier Brown, is walking across the stage as well. Several starters on the offensive line in tackles Blake Steen and McKale Boley, as well as center Dawson Alters will also be leaving.
