Texas Turns To Veteran Replacement For Departing McCoy

Image

Austin, TX. - In the past, when Texas head coach Nash Savage has needed a new offensive coordinator, his preference has been clear: young, innovative minds with upside. From Tommy Rees and Kadin Semonza to the most recent hire, Colt McCoy, Savage has consistently chosen rising stars to pair with his dynamic offenses—though not every experiment, such as a brief and unsuccessful stint with former Georgia wideout Hines Ward, has panned out.

But this time, in his 11th year at the helm, Savage is bucking that trend.

On Tuesday, Texas officially announced the hiring of Jim McElwain as offensive coordinator. McElwain, a longtime college football veteran, will join the Longhorns following the conclusion of their 2036 season. The 73-year-old coach was recently relieved of his duties at UMass, where he spent 12 seasons and compiled a 65–85 record.

“Coach McElwain has been around the game since I was in diapers—literally,” Savage said with a grin. “We’re not looking to reinvent the wheel. We need a guy who knows football, knows how to coach, and can keep this offense sharp and prepared. Coach McElwain fits that bill.”

Though the hire raised eyebrows in some circles, particularly due to McElwain’s age and modest recent record, the logic behind the move appears strategic.

McElwain brings stability. And perhaps more importantly, he frees up Savage to devote more time to grooming current defensive coordinator Quincey Lincoln for a future head coaching role—just as he did with Semonza at Syracuse and McCoy in Austin.

“Coach Savage sees something in Lincoln,” one source close to the program noted. “If he hired another young offensive mind, he’d have to be in the trenches with him every day. With McElwain, that’s not necessary. Jim’s a seasoned pro—he knows the job and doesn’t need handholding.”

McElwain himself was frank about the move, noting he’s not here to build a long-term legacy in Austin.

“At my age, I’m realistic,” he said. “But I’ve never won a national title, and I’d like to change that before I call it a career. That’s the goal.”

He’ll get a front-row seat immediately. McElwain is expected to be in attendance for the Longhorns’ National Championship Game as a spectator, before officially assuming his new role after the season concludes.

Hey you hired an old CSU coach to be OC :kghah:

Interesting choice - here's hoping you can get a little vengeance against Notre Dame here for knocking off Ball State (that was your job!)

Texas on a warpath this year. With the Natty being in Dallas, we had to turn up.

It was more he was the only coach with a good investment in recruiting points. I didn't invest in the recruiting tree at all with Savage to make recruiting harder, but I try and get some bonuses from my coordinators. Plus I think it makes sense story wise, he's trying to get Linc up to speed and McElwain can hold down the offensive fort.

Arlington, TX. - When the 2036 College Football Playoff began, fans across the country dreamed of one matchup: Nash Savage’s Texas Longhorns vs. Kadin Semonza’s Ball State Cardinals. Mentor vs. protégé. Legacy vs. upstart dynasty. Would Savage protect his Syracuse-era four-peat legacy, or would Semonza elevate Ball State into college football immortality?

Notre Dame had other plans.

The Fighting Irish shattered that dream in the Orange Bowl, outlasting Ball State in a 59-52 shootout. But if Texas was disappointed by missing out on the fairytale matchup, they didn’t sulk — they took it personally. And in front of a raucous home-state crowd at AT&T Stadium, they unleashed a full-throttle demolition of the Irish, 59–17, to bring a long-awaited national championship back to Austin.

It’s the Longhorns’ first national title since Vince Young’s legendary 2005 team — and the sixth of Nash Savage’s storied career.

The game opened with signs of a potential shootout. Texas marched down the field on a methodical opening drive to take a 7–0 lead, while Notre Dame answered with a promising possession — until a red zone fumble stalled their momentum and forced them to settle for a field goal early in the second quarter.

Then, the avalanche came.

With Texas up 14–3, Notre Dame quarterback PJ Sauer — the Heisman runner-up and typically unshakable leader — threw an uncharacteristic interception across his body, picked off by George Rubio near the sideline. Lee Vela capitalized immediately with a touchdown run, and the Longhorns were rolling.

Sauer made another costly mistake the very next drive, lofting a soft pass up the sideline that Prince Hooey easily read and intercepted. One play later, Maurice Uwazurike dropped in a perfectly-placed deep ball to Andre Mond, who made a contested grab and stumbled into the end zone for a 28–3 lead.

Notre Dame finally responded with an 82-yard catch-and-run by Pat Lutrus to briefly stop the bleeding, but Texas had no intention of letting up. Uwazurike hit Santiago DeCastro on a deep strike, setting up his fourth touchdown of the first half — this one a swing pass to Miguel Jerman, who weaved through defenders for a 35–10 halftime lead.

With the ball to start the second half, Texas looked poised to seal the game early. But on the opening drive, Uwazurike overthrew Lee Vela on a crossing route, and Notre Dame’s Frederick Hewitt came down with the interception. Moments later, Jeffrey Crick bulldozed through tacklers for a stunning 97-yard touchdown — and suddenly, the Irish had life.

They forced a quick three-and-out and threatened to pull within striking distance. But Sauer’s earlier demons returned. Two more interceptions — his third and fourth of the night — led to 10 more points for Texas, and with that, the outcome was all but sealed.

“You can’t say Notre Dame didn’t have a window,” said Kirk Herbstreit as the broadcast wound down. “If they punch it in and make it 35–24, it’s game on. Uwazurike was showing some cracks. But those back-to-back picks ended it.”

Despite 446 total yards by the Irish (316 passing, 130 rushing), their five turnovers and Sauer’s sub-50% completion rate made the stats feel empty. The Longhorns defense bent — but every time it counted, they broke Notre Dame’s will.

Uwazurike tied the championship game record with five touchdown passes in his final collegiate game while also finishing with 367 yards through the air. Lee Vela added 183 rushing yards in what many expect to also be his final collegiate game. Uwazurike, named the game’s MVP, was emotional in the postgame.

“Just proud. We’ve been chasing this moment for years,” he said. “To go out like this, with this team, in front of this crowd — it’s everything.”

For Savage, the title was not just redemption — it was history. With his sixth national championship, he ties Bear Bryant for second all-time and becomes the first coach ever to win national titles at three different schools.

“I said I was going to soak it in, and I will — eventually,” Savage said postgame. “But around here, we always wake up on a loss. That’s the mentality, grind every day no matter the outcome. Tomorrow, we go back to work. Because this? This has to be the standard in Austin, not the exception.”

The Longhorns are champions again — and with Savage at the helm, they might just be getting started.
