Cavaliers exorcise demons behind stellar defense, potent offense

"Damn, that sh*t was sweet," commented cornerback Dre Walker after Virginia managed to smother Utah State in their Week 5 matchup, 45-7. "We know that there was tons of people getting on us for our performances the last couple of games. Lord knows Coach X [head coach James Xavier] and Coach Fish [defensive coordinator Brandon Fisher] wanted us to step up and quit being a damn liability. It felt like we finally showed up."

The story of the game was four first half turnovers from the Cavaliers' secondary. Cornerbacks Walker, Kevon Gray and Tayon Holloway as well as safety Keke Adams all got to Utah State quarterback C.J. Tiller while Coach Fisher's ferocious blitz packages sent the Utah State offensive line into a whirlwind. Edge rushers Chase Morrison and Jewett Hayes combined for 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

The offense turned the corner as well, as quarterback Anthony Colandrea threw for four touchdowns through the air while star running back Donte Hawthorne churned through a hapless Aggies defense to the tune of 177 yards on the ground and a pair of touchdowns.

"We needed this," said head coach James Xavier. "This was catharsis for a team that was down on its luck and needed direction. We weren't sleeping on Utah State and we needed to wake the nation back up that a pair of bad games wasn't going to dictate who we really are."

Tight end Dom President, who is making a real run for the Mackey Award as the nation's top tight end, rattled off 10 catches for 135 yards and his second touchdown of the season. This is President's third consecutive game with double-digit receptions and fourth straight game with over 100 yards.

Virginia heads back onto the road next week for another ACC matchup against the lowly Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
