Rebuilt, Reborn, Relentless: Ingolstadt’s All-German Core Stuns Bundesliga After Fire Sale

Image
A mass exodus took place at Ingolstadt to pay for the club's financial crimes, Lucas Bohm led that with world record €354M transfer to PSG
When FC Ingolstadt were forced to sell nearly a billion euros' worth of world-class talent in January due to financial sanctions, the prevailing belief was simple: the dynasty was dead.

And yet, just a month later, the new-look Schanzer are still top of the Bundesliga—eight points clear of second-place Bayern Munich, defying every prediction and proving that manager Sabrina Wittmann’s vision transcends individual talent.

From Fire Sale to Firestorm

Ingolstadt’s January squad overhaul was seismic. Eleven elite starters were sold, including Ballon d’Or winner Lucas Böhm and midfield maestro Vincent Weber. In their place? A squad made entirely of young, hungry, homegrown German players, many of whom had once called Ingolstadt’s academy home before being shipped out during the club’s meteoric rise.

“We didn’t have time to panic,” Wittmann told reporters after their 3–1 win over Stuttgart. “We had a culture already. All we had to do was trust it.”

Meet the New XI: German, Gritty, and Gelling Fast

Captain Lennart König (29) is the heartbeat of the team, anchoring the backline with calm authority and rallying a youthful squad around him. He’s flanked in defense by Adam Bauer (24) and rising star Nils Stief (19), while Ben Schneider (20) and Felix Heinrich (22) provide balance and energy as fullbacks.

In midfield, Emil Vogel (20) has become the team's central compass—combining composure beyond his years with relentless work rate. Alongside him, Theodor Bauer (20) and Adrian Koch (19) offer tactical discipline and dynamic passing, while Oskar Mayer (20) has taken on the creative burden as the team’s new No. 10.

Out wide, Jonas Möller (20) and Lian Zimmermann (22) are direct and fearless, constantly driving at defenders, while up front, Julius Schubert (24) has stepped into the scoring void left by Böhm—already with 11 league goals since the winter break. Lias Fischer (26) offers muscle and movement beside him, with Frank Jung (20) and Philipp Hase (25) rotating in as energetic backups.

Between the sticks, Oskar Fischer (21) has been a revelation, keeping clean sheets against the likes of Dortmund and Leipzig and playing with a maturity that belies his age.

Mixed Fortunes in the Cups

Despite their league dominance, the cup competitions have provided reality checks. Ingolstadt were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal in the Round of 16 after a tense penalty shootout defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, where the lack of experienced heads showed under pressure.

In Europe, however, the story remains promising: the club managed to finish 7th in the Champions League League Phase, qualifying for the Round of 16, a remarkable achievement considering the squad’s January transformation. The draw has placed them against Atletico Madrid, a matchup that will test the resolve of Wittmann’s new charges.

What Comes Next?

With 14 league games remaining, Ingolstadt stand on the precipice of one of the most improbable title defenses in football history. Their lead over Bayern may be slim in historical terms, but the belief within the camp is growing by the week.

“We play with freedom,” said striker Julius Schubert. “No one expects us to be here, so we just go out and prove them wrong.”

The next few months will define the future of Sabrina Wittmann’s second era at Ingolstadt—not built on global megastars, but on belief, development, and identity.

From ashes to ascendance, FC Ingolstadt are rewriting the script. Again.
