Coach James Xavier's Gameplan

"Another obstacle in the way of our true goals. We know what we want, and we know what we have to do to get it. SMU is a veteran-laden squad with an excellent head coach and a superstar of a quarterback manning their offense. They've got veterans all throughout their battle-tested defense. This doesn't have to be harder than our games against Notre Dame or North Carolina, but they want this badly. They are currently forecasted to be in the College Playoff bracket and don't want to slip up now. Personally, I don't care what their expectations are. We're going to walk in there with no fear in our hearts and give them four quarters of Hell. That's the standard."

So nice, they did it thrice - Cavaliers knock off SMU in shootout

It may have looked a little dodgy at times, as if it was built on shaky foundation. But, the Virginia Cavaliers pulled out an impressive 43-35 victory over the #9 SMU Mustangs to pull off their third ranked upset of the season, certainly building a case for a berth in the College Football Playoff and perhaps if they play their cards right, the ACC championship game.

Though the Cavaliers do have their rivalry game yet to play, so it may be a tad premature to start buying tickets, they have a lot to be confident about. Their aerial attack was relentless, leaving an SMU secondary speechless after allowing one of the most dominant games from wide receiver Jaden Gibson. He tied a school-record 16 receptions and slid past the historic 200-yard mark in receiving. He added two touchdowns to boot.

"He wants his respect," said offensive coordinator Slade Nagle. "Everyone is talking about our running game or how impressive Dom [President] always is, and be that as it may, Jaden is one of the best receivers in the nation. He deserves the respect. He makes our offense more than one dimensional."

The defense bottled up former Heisman hopeful SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings for most of the game, albeit allowing a few splash plays in the secondary that Virginia hopeful have come to expect from a sometimes-hapless Cavaliers' secondary. Though Tayon Holloway did record his second touchdown of the year off his fourth interception to start the game.

Quarterback Anthony Colandrea is officially the all-time school leader in both passing yards and touchdowns, now having 9,003 passing yards and 73 career touchdowns for the University of Virginia. Running back Donte Hawthorne has his school record-breaking 19th touchdown on the season. Wide receiver Jaden Gibson has tied the school record for receptions in a game with 16 - joining Alvin Pearman's 2003 record. He was 31 yards shy of Olamide Zaccheaus' 2018 record of 247 receiving yards in a game.

"We spoke this into existence," said coach James Xavier, seeing his first season as a head coach coming out as a resounding success. "We have a lot more to do, but we need to live in the present and enjoy the victories we have now."
