UTA (7-7) | 16 | 24 | 21 | 18 | 79
LAL (13-1) | 18 | 29 | 28 | 29 | 104
Crypto.com Arena, Los Angeles, CA
The Los Angeles Lakers played host to the Utah Jazz for the second NBA Cup game. The Lakers won their first game just four days prior in San Antonio, while Utah loss their first game to Phoenix by 21 points. Despite being one game above .500 coming into this one, the Jazz were on a two game losing streak dropping games against the Kings and the Clippers. Utah managed to keep pace with Los Angeles for their first half, as they were only down by 7 points at the break. Los Angeles came out on fire in the second half, quickly taking a 20 point lead before Utah was able to cut into the lead with clutch three point shots from Bogdan Bogdanovic to end the quarter.
Takeaways
Jazz
Utah struggled with three point shooting. Lauri Markannen went two of thirteen beyond the arc as the Jazz tried to shoot their way out of this one. They hoisted up 40 shots from deep and only knocked down 14 of them. They still haven’t managed to find a replacement for the size of Walker Kessler in the paint this season. Rebounding was terrible as they only cleared 24 defensive boards, in comparison to Los Angeles’ 39 defensive rebounds.
Lakers
As with his rookie season, David Grace shined in Anthony Davis’s absence, finishing with 42 points, 32 of them coming through the first three quarters. LeBron James had a quiet night scoring only 7 points, which is the fewest points he’s scored this season.
Key stat
Lakers had 56 points in the paint.
Key moment
James to Grace half court bomb to kick off with Lakers 12-0 scoring run

How Sweet the Sound - The Story of David "Amazing" Grace (2K23 MyCareer)

December 2023
I felt my phone buzzing in the bed with me, but I was too tired to answer. We got back from San Antonio pretty late last night and all I wanted to do was sleep until our next game. My phone immediately started ringing again. I opened one eye and saw Dom’s name on the screen so I figured it was important.
“’ello?” I mumble and stretch.
“David, are you busy?”
“David?” I slowly sat up. “Am I in trouble?”
“It depends on how you answer my next question. Do you think you can meet me on campus in like an hour?”
“Sure. Do I have time to grab a shower and a sandwich? It’s not the car, is it?”
“No, but I need you to meet somebody.”
“This not like a meet and greet type thing is it? You know you gotta go through Ray for that. No freebies because I let you smash.” I joked.
“Boy, stop! Just wash your ass and get down here.”
A little over an hour later, I’m walking through the doors of the athletic facility at the Galen Center. I can faintly hear a ball bouncing. I make my way to one of the practice courts where I see Dominque and another girl sitting in a chair. She’s wearing a boot on her foot and she’s dribbling basketball. Dom looks up as she laughs at something the girl says and sees me.
“You made it! And I only had to wait thirty extra minutes.” She waited with her hands on hips as I bent down and gave her a kiss.
“But I’m here though. I caught a ride.” I held out my hand to the other young lady. She looked familiar but I couldn’t place her.
“Charlotte. But everybody calls me--”
“Charli!” I snapped my fingers as I remembered. “Charli Cross. You took out your braids.” I looked down at the boot. “I saw that game. How much longer are you gonna be in that jawn?”
“Docs say probably another six weeks. Season is done.”
“Damn. You’ll bounce back though. Kobe did.”
“Speaking of, Dom told me that you might be willing to work out with me in the offseason once all this is done. I should be able to get back to regular basketball related activities in April or May. Maybe if you have some down time during the offseason. I know you’ll be busy during the playoff time.”
I nodded, but didn’t say anything. I looked over at my girlfriend and she just gave me a big smile.
“When she said she knew somebody, I didn’t think she meant you. I swear I didn’t even know who she was,” Charli rushed out. “We have a business class together.”
“Nah, it’s cool. Give me your number.” I pulled out my phone. “I’ll check in on you throughout the season. Now when you get the green light to get back in the gym let me know. Hopefully, we’ll be deep in the playoffs, but we can get something set up for the summer.”
“For real?”
“Yeah, for real.”
“I am trying to work on other skillsets while I’m rehabbing. Develop more of a mid-range, maybe stretch it out to the three?”
“Oh, you trying to be on your A’ja Wilson.”
“Something like that.”
“Bet. I can get with my people and see what you can work on while you got another six weeks in that boot.”
“See?” Dom finally piped up. “I told you he would want to help.”
“Yeah, you delivered, Dom. I’ll get with your boss. You said his name was Ray?”
I gave Dom a side eye.
“Yeah, he’s actually David’s agent. But he’s been trying to get more into women’s sports and with the NIL and everything, I think he would love to take you on.”
Charli’s phone buzzed and she smiled. “My boyfriend is done with football practice and he’s on his way.”
“That’s right. Trojans are in the Holiday Bowl, huh?”
“Yeah. He’s excited. I really appreciate this, Dom. And you too, David.”
“No problem. And use that number. If you wanna talk about hoops, life, whatever. Hit me up.”
Dom slipped her hand into mine. “Do you want us to wait with you?”
“Oh, no I’m good. I’ll hit you up later though, Dom.”
“Looking forward to it.”
Dom and I headed to my car in silence. I unlocked the door for her, but I kept my hand on the handle instead of opening it.
“So, you representing the agency now?”
“I mean, we kicked the idea around during my externship this summer. There isn’t a lot of noise surrounding her right now. Not like JuJu. But I think there can be. If she has the right team in place.”
“Well, I’m sure your “boss” will be excited to hear about this prospect.” I opened the door of her BMW, and she climbed in.
“Thanks for your help in there by the way.”
“You’re the only person that can pimp me out.”
Present
I’m sitting courtside in a mostly empty arena waiting for the USC Women of Troy to start their shoot around before their home game against Notre Dame. The team starts to file in, I hold out my fist to dap them up as they jog past. Finally, JuJu and Charli emerge from the locker room.
“Dave, you made it!”
“Of course I did. I can only stay for like the first quarter, but I wasn’t gonna miss this.”
“Denver tonight, right?”
“Yep.
“Man, you’re gonna steal our shine being out here.”
“Me?” I looked around. “You said that like LeBron was here. I’ll give a little wave and then it’s back to the game.”
“Stop the cap, D Geezy. MVP, two-time champ, and now we gotta add gold medalist to the list. The people are gonna go nuts.”
“Well, maybe it’ll take some of the pressure off of you then. First game back. How you feeling?”
“Feeling good.”
“Just good?”
“About eighty-eight percent. The other twelve will kick in once I’m out there on the court.”
“That’s what’s up. Let’s get some shots up real quick.”
An hour later, the game is underway. Dominique and Ray had arrived as well. Notre Dame came out on fire, going up double-digits in the first quarter, but USC started to make a run. I had to head out before the end of the second quarter, but I streamed the game on my way to the arena. They were only down by seven at halftime. Charli only had two rebounds, no points. I sent her a text once I got to the parking lot at Crypto.
D Geezy Today at 1:45 PM
You gotta relax. Trust yourself.
I didn’t expect a response, so I sent a text to Dom asking her to tell her to breathe. She said that she would.
They lost the game, but Charli had a better second half. She finished with 10 points and 8 rebounds. I was sitting in the locker room when I felt my phone buzz. I thought it was Dom, but it wasn’t.
“Not bad for the first game back.”
“Not even a hello?”
“Nah, I gotta make it quick. No time for pleasantries. We were watching.”
“We?”
“Yeah, we had the game on in the locker room.”
“LeBron watched that hot mess?” She groaned in disappointment, causing me to laugh out loud.
“It wasn’t all bad. You ladies held it down, but it’s still early. You’re back. Kiki is still adjusting. Notre Dame is tough.”
“I guess.”
“But, listen, if you ladies are up for it, come to the game. Suite tickets on the house.”
“We just lost on national television and the best we can get are suite tickets?” She laughed.
“For the whole team? Hell yes. You think I’m made of money?”
“I mean two hundred and FIFTEEN milly…”
“Tell Dom stop hustling me. I know she’s feeding you that BS. Let me see what I can work out.”
“Come on, babe. I know you can get the courtside experience for the ladies.” Dom’s voice came through the phone. “I already have a sitter lined up for tonight if you can make this happen. I’ll even do that thing that you like.”
I’m silent for a moment. Then, “This is extortion.”
“I see it as a win-win.”
“A’ight. If I have a bad game because my focus is somewhere else tonight…”
“Well, if you win then I’ll do that other thing with my--”
“Aht! Aht! Put Charli back on.”
“You the man, D Geezy! Best mentor ever!”
“Whatever. Get your squad together. Dom and Ray will take care of the rest. See y’all tonight.”
I shake my head and toss my phone in my bag after I disconnect the call. Dom is still pimping me out.

DG knows that sometimes it's okay to go along for the ride.
Magic are looking to make a lil noise in this East this year after getting bounced in the playoffs by ATL in the first round.
Dom likes to wind him up, but he knows when to keep the main thing, the main thing.
