We struggled to get going and when we did get to the red zone, we had a missed kick, a blocked kick and then a fumble on a botched speed option play which I'm pretty much going to stop running. when it breaks, it's a long run but for some reason, my QB always pitches the ball 20 yards from where the RB is

Kennesaw State head coach Bubba Mack embracing youth movement
in final home game of the season

By Lamar O'Neal
November 18, 2025

In the 33-0 shutout loss to Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State freshman receiver Ali Joyner caught more than two passes for the first time in a game this season since his breakout performance against Louisiana Tech where the freshman receiver's career high six receptions were lost in the madness of that walk off win. Since then, Joyner had struggled to get on the field as veteran receiver Gabriel Benyard returned from injury, joining a receiver room that features three seniors in Benyard, Christian Moss and Tykeem Wallace.

There weren't a lot of bright spots in last week's loss but head coach Bubba Mack pointed out Joyner's performance and effort as a positive takeaway.

"The young guys are hungry," Mack said when asked how tough it is to navigate the ups and downs of this season, "We have a lot of young guys on our team that are still trying to establish themselves as legitimate college players and not just high school kids that graduated. For a guy like [Ali] Joyner, he's made the most of his opportunities and was one of our better players on Saturday. He's certainly more opportunity and that's something I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with it."

The Owls still have a shot at bowl eligible but would need to not only stop a two-game losing streak but beat out Missouri State in the final home game of the season and beat undefeated Liberty in the regular season finale. Mack says he's open to playing younger players in these final two weeks but still expects a lot out of them.

"It's not just recess and we don't care what the final scores is," Mack added, "We want to play young guys, get them on the field and see what they can do but you'd have to earn that. I think there are a lot of guys that we're definitely excited about maybe playing more than we've had throughout the season and for the older guys, you know, you left that door open so it is what it is at that point."

Redshirt sophomore quarterback Amari Odom has not played in a game this year and Mack says he would like to feature the six-foot-five Inglewood native, if the opportunity allows it. He also highlighted running back Kyshon Franklin Jr. (sophomore), receiver Navelle Dean (redshirt sophomore), defensive end Byron Jackson (freshman) and linebacker Jaiden Kimble (sophomore) as scout team standouts throughout the season that could see some action in the final two weeks.
