A young wing from northern California, Prince Riz was a hometown hero for Redondo Union High School. While many thought his true ability was as a football player, his true love was on the hardwood. As a 6’3” sophomore, many schools on the West Coast were recruiting him to come play hoops - UC Davis, San Diego, Seattle University to name a few.

It wasn’t until his junior season when he started to see more fanfare from larger programs. Was it his improved statistical output across the board: 18 points, seven boards, four dimes to go with two blocks and two steals a night? Was it the fact he led the team to the Final Four of the state title against complete juggernauts in the state? Or was it the fact he had sprung up to 6’6” to go along with his ever-developing skills?

His senior year, it was time to put the college basketball recruiting world on notice. A full year as the lead man, sticking it out at Redondo Union while rebuffing offers to come play at prestigious private schools across the state, Prince Riz took the team all the way and secured the first state title in school history. His numbers were eye-dropping, averaging 28 a night with 14 boards, nine assists, four steals and three blocks. The high major offers were coming in from all over for the now 6’9” do-it-all forward.

Three teams stuck out most for the composite four-star top-100 recruit in the nation: Ohio State, Maryland and Oregon. The Big Ten came hard for Riz to sign on with their programs. The Buckeyes and Terrapins would have lent Riz the chance to be Big Man On Campus and lead from Day 1. The Ducks gave him the comfortability of being on the West Coast where he had always wanted to be, though a much more crowded depth chart.

When it was time to make his decision in front of the adoring fans of Redondo Union, it seemed like half the gym was shocked and the other half excited: Prince Riz was committing to the Oregon Ducks! Friends and family would be just a drive away from watching him play out his college career.

The talking heads were buzzing about Prince Riz and his rise to stardom on the recruiting trail and the talk was that he was going to be the piece to take Oregon to the next level in the NCAA tournament. Their opening game of the season was against the unanimous #1 team in all the land: the Duke Blue Devils. Led by the expected first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Cooper Flagg, Duke made the rare trek across the country to take on the Ducks pitting Flagg and Riz against each other from the opening tip to the closing seconds…sort of.

Flagg, the Maine native that has been the talk of the basketball universe now that Victor Wembanyama is in San Antonio, was everything as advertised. A ferocious competitor on both ends of the floor, Flagg put up a stat line that Riz was used to in his senior high school season. For the Ducks, Prince did not live up to the hype and was seemingly overwhelmed by Flagg, the college competition and seemingly the pressure of it all.

The disappointing game bled over into a disappointing season for Riz, seeing his name go from potentially a top-5 pick to a player that may not hear his name called in the first 30 selections. Oregon floundered in the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament, bowing out in the second round, ironically, to the Maryland Terrapin team Prince spurned on signing day. A decision needed to be made: enter the draft and hopefully realize his dream of being selected in the first round or go back to school, work on his craft and secure a decent-sized NIL bag.

After some pre-draft workouts and seemed more and more likely that he would be announced as a draft pick by Commissioner Adam Silver rather than Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum. Prince was locked in and ready to go. On draft night, he awaited his name to be called pick after pick.

Maybe Prince could land in a winning situation, learn behind a veteran and get his feet wet playing meaningful games and even some playoff minutes if he was so lucky. The lottery had come up and gone without being drafted. The Thunder passed on him at 15, the Grizzlies traded away 16 to Portland, the Wolves didn’t see Prince as a fit at 17. All solid playoff franchises leaving Prince on the board. The Nets at 19, using their third of five first round picks, didn’t even take a shot on him. Heat Culture at 20 would be a great fit! Instead, they went with a raw guard that most couldn’t pronounce his name.

On the clock at 21 was the Jazz, who had already selected Ace Bailey. Prince’s phone rang and it was his agent, he said to sit up in the chair and look excited, no matter what Commissioner Silver said. “Utah, I think I can make this work.” Riz said to himself. As Adam Silver approached the podium, the first words that came out of his mouth were “We have a trade.” Wait, is it not Utah?

“The Utah Jazz have dealt the rights to the 21st pick in the 2025 draft to the Washington Wizards.” Washington?!? This wasn’t Washington state on the West Coast! Prince finally realized he was packing up his life in that instance. “With the 21st pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, the Washington Wizards select Prince Riz, forward, from the University of Oregon!”

Forcing a smile, Prince Riz got out of his seat, hugged his family, dapped up his agent and made his way to the stage. Foolishly, he posed with the Jazz hat on knowing that he was going to be a Wizard. Not yet ready to think about his future, he contemplated the past year. How could it all have been different if he decided to go to Maryland or Ohio State? Would he have been battling Cooper Flagg for that top spot?

After the night had ended, Prince laid in bed preparing to take off for Washington in the morning and finally gave his future a thought. “Could I be the one to bring this franchise to the promise land? What if this all was for the best?” Deep down, there was still one re-do he couldn’t stop thinking of…

I was hoping Keshawn got drafted to the Wizard. A lot of young players, especially guards and wings, on that team though.
