Majestic Pines Lay the Foundation with Massive 2025 Recruiting Class

Image
Portland, Maine —
If the 2024 cycle was about establishing credibility, the 2025 recruiting class is about building a football program that can last.

Maine State University officially wrapped up its first true full recruiting cycle with a large, position-balanced class made up primarily of high school prospects, players who represent the long-term vision of head coach Rob Tierney and his staff. From the trenches to the secondary, the Majestic Pines targeted size, versatility, and developmental upside, understanding that this group would grow alongside the program itself.

“This class is about patience and belief,” Tierney said. “These guys chose Maine State knowing they were helping build something from the ground up. That says a lot about their character.”

Defensively, the class is heavy with front-seven talent and interchangeable linebackers, a clear signal of the identity Maine State wants to establish early.

Linebackers Draymond Gates, Elijah Greenwood Jr., Ethan Guevara, and Derrick Jamison form a deep, physical core at the WILL and MIKE positions. Each brings college-ready size and the versatility to contribute on special teams while developing into larger roles.

Up front, defensive linemen Brendan Keyes, Rodney Truehill, Zion McClain, Eli Stackhouse, Nick Forsyth, and Javon Stanley give Maine State immediate depth and long-term rotation potential. Keyes and Truehill anchor the interior, while McClain and Stackhouse project as edge defenders capable of growing into disruptive pass rushers.

In the secondary, the Pines added length, speed, and range. Safeties Trayvon Battle, Malik Crutchfield, and Marcellus Grant headline a group designed to be interchangeable in coverage. Corners Jalen Bowens, Zaire Peoples, and Javion Tate bring quickness and competitive edge to a young defensive back room.

On offense, Maine State focused on versatility and balance rather than immediate star power, a deliberate approach for a first-year roster.

Quarterbacks Eli McIntyre and Walker Sims give the program two very different developmental options under center, creating healthy competition in the quarterback room.

The running back group was reinforced by Colton Briggs, Malik “MJ” Jenkins, and Devon Stills, a trio with contrasting styles (power, vision, and speed) that fits well into a committee approach early on.

At wide receiver, Micah Bellamy, Kaleb Monroe, Asher Varner, and Jaden Whittaker form a young, athletic group with length and vertical ability, while tight ends Logan Byers and Trey McCallister give the offense reliable targets in the middle of the field.

Perhaps the most important takeaway from the class is the emphasis on offensive line development. Guards Owen Faulkner, Jared Lindstrom, Zachary Pitts, and tackle Blake Navarro, along with center Khalil Morgan, provide a physical foundation that will take time to mature, but could become a strength of the program by the time Maine State fully settles into FBS life.

The lone non-high school addition, Deshawn Ridley, arrives from Idaho (FCS) and adds experience and immediate competition to the interior offensive line.

This group won’t define Maine State football in one season, and it isn’t meant to. Instead, it represents the first generation of Majestic Pines players who will grow up in the program, develop in its system, and eventually lead it.

“We’re not chasing shortcuts,” Tierney said. “We’re building roots.”

For a program taking its first real steps into Division I football, the 2025 class isn’t just large, it’s intentional. And for Maine State, that may be the most important recruiting win of all.

Building the Pines: Maine State Welcomes Deep, Physical 2026 Recruiting Class

Image

Portland, Maine —
Maine State University has officially unveiled its 2026 recruiting class, and while there may not be a five-star headline grabber in the group, head coach Rob Tierney believes the Majestic Pines have assembled exactly the kind of roster needed to establish the program's foundation.

The class combines promising freshmen with experienced transfers from every corner of the country, and even beyond it, giving Maine State a blend of immediate contributors and long-term developmental pieces as the Majestic Pines prepare for their inaugural season.

"We're not chasing recruiting rankings," Tierney said. "We're building a football team. We wanted competitors, leaders, and guys who fit what Maine State football is going to be about."

Quarterback Room Adds Experience and Excitement

Perhaps no position better reflects the balance of the class than quarterback.

Freshman Kyree Daniels arrives as one of the most dynamic athletes in the Northeast. A true dual-threat quarterback with explosive speed and natural playmaking ability, Daniels has already impressed coaches during offseason workouts with his ability to extend plays and create offense outside the pocket.

"Kyree can turn a broken play into a touchdown," offensive coordinator Sean Driscoll said. "You don't coach that."

Joining him is perhaps the most intriguing newcomer on the roster.

Brady Kellerman, a redshirt senior transfer, has taken one of college football's more unusual paths to Portland. After beginning his career at Oklahoma State before transferring to New Hampshire, Kellerman elected to use his final season of eligibility with Maine State.

Standing tall in the pocket with one of the strongest arms on the roster, Kellerman arrives looking for one final opportunity to earn a starting job.

"He's seen just about everything college football can throw at you," Tierney said. "His experience will be invaluable for our younger quarterbacks."

Skill Positions Built Around Size and Versatility

Freshman running back Tyrese Claiborne projects as a dangerous third-down weapon thanks to his quickness, receiving ability, and comfort operating in space.

At fullback, Mason Thibodeau brings old-school toughness. A relentless blocker from northern Maine, Thibodeau embraces the physical side of the position and has already become a favorite among the offensive line.

The receiving corps received an influx of size.

At 6-foot-4, Brayden Knox uses his physicality to win at the catch point, while fellow freshman Rico Vaughn, listed at 6-foot-3, has developed a reputation for making contested catches in traffic.

"They're not afraid to go get the football," receivers coach Troy Jenkins said. "Sometimes your best route is simply being bigger than the guy covering you."

Tight end Jahlil Patterson may possess the highest ceiling of the offensive skill players. Standing 6-foot-6 with uncommon speed, Patterson has the athletic profile to become a matchup nightmare in both the passing game and the red zone.

Rebuilding the Offensive Line

Protecting the quarterback was a priority throughout the recruiting cycle.

Freshman offensive tackles Andrew Spanway and Hunter Wozniak arrive with prototypical size and polished pass-blocking fundamentals. Coaches believe both have the frame to anchor the edge for years to come.

The most college-ready addition comes from the transfer portal.

Former Rutgers tackle Landon Griggs is expected to compete immediately for the starting right tackle position after gaining valuable Big Ten experience.

Meanwhile, freshman Niko Vettori remains one of the staff's favorite developmental projects. A relative newcomer to organized football, Vettori combines rare strength with exceptional athleticism.

"He hasn't even scratched the surface," offensive line coach Wes Maloney said. "Once the game slows down for him, look out."

Inside, freshman guard Chris Cardenas impressed coaches with his footwork and mobility, while Jermaine Houston, a powerful product of Bridgton Academy, brings a road-grader mentality despite moving surprisingly well for his size.

At center, freshman Grant Huff enters slightly undersized but technically advanced as a pass protector.

Transfer Trevor Napoli, a sophomore arriving from the University of Maine, is expected to challenge immediately for the starting center job thanks to his experience and athleticism.

Reinforcements Arrive Up Front

Defensively, the Majestic Pines focused heavily on rebuilding the trenches.

Edge rushers Ellis Berry and Camden Rush offer contrasting styles.

Berry possesses elite first-step quickness and projects as a high-upside pass rusher capable of developing into one of the conference's most disruptive defensive ends.

Rush lacks prototypical size but compensates with relentless effort, leverage, and burst around the edge. Coaches believe he'll carve out an immediate situational role on passing downs.

Inside, defensive tackles Devin Scates and Carlos Spivey bring the power Maine State covets.

Spivey is the classic space-eating nose tackle, capable of occupying multiple blockers and freeing linebackers behind him.

Scates complements him as an interior penetrator who consistently collapses the pocket with raw strength.

Athletic Linebackers Give Defense Flexibility

The linebacker class may ultimately become the strength of the entire recruiting haul.

Brendan Cotwright arrives as an old-fashioned strong-side linebacker who thrives on delivering punishing hits.

Ben Laney offers a completely different skill set, possessing the coverage ability to function as a hybrid linebacker-safety against spread offenses.

Junior college transfer Tyrese Wynn comes to Maine State from Butte College after establishing himself as one of California's most productive defenders. Coaches rave about his ability to shed blockers and find the football.

Another JUCO addition, Jeremiah Knox, transfers from Erie Community College in Buffalo as a junior. A fundamentally sound tackler with impressive range, Knox brings maturity and leadership to the second level.

Freshman Zyrek Douglas rounds out the group as perhaps the fastest linebacker in the class, projecting as a valuable coverage defender against modern passing attacks.

Secondary Blends Experience with Athleticism

The defensive back class reflects the same philosophy seen throughout the roster: combine experienced transfers with high-upside freshmen.

Junior college transfer Tre'Sean Barber arrives from Blinn College in Texas carrying a reputation as a physical press corner who enjoys challenging receivers at the line of scrimmage.

His cousin, Amari Glenn, transfers from Bridgton Academy after showcasing elite closing speed and fluid athleticism. Coaches expect him to compete for playing time immediately.

Freshman Randall Glenn, Amari's cousin, starred as a two-way player in high school before ultimately settling at cornerback. Known for his instincts and ball skills, he intercepted 11 passes over his final two prep seasons and quickly earned praise for his football IQ.

Another experienced addition comes in DJ Rollins, a junior college transfer from Nassau Community College in New York. Rollins built his reputation as a lockdown perimeter defender capable of matching up against larger receivers while also contributing on special teams as a gunner.

Freshman Noah Willoughby may be the most versatile athlete in the class after playing cornerback, safety, running back, and wide receiver during high school. Coaches believe that flexibility will allow him to contribute in multiple packages.

New Faces at Safety

Freshman Quinton Key arrives with outstanding range and natural instincts as a center-field safety. A former quarterback during his sophomore year of high school, Key's understanding of offensive concepts has translated into excellent anticipation in coverage.

Canadian transfer Kendrick Lowe joins Maine State after beginning his collegiate career at McGill University in Montreal. A disciplined defender with polished coverage skills, Lowe provides valuable experience to a young secondary.

Freshman Michael Roderick Jr. offers a different look altogether. Most comfortable playing near the line of scrimmage, Roderick has drawn comparisons to a weak-side linebacker thanks to his physical style and willingness to attack downhill.

Specialists Add Unique Stories

The recruiting class concludes with perhaps its two most unique additions.

Kicker Luis Romero first came to the United States as an exchange student before becoming a local legend by drilling the game-winning field goal in his high school's state championship game. His consistency and composure quickly caught the attention of Maine State's coaching staff.

Meanwhile, punter Nathan Stovall takes one of the most unconventional paths on the roster.

He was born and raised in Hawaii.

Now 29 years old, Stovall spent several years training through Prokick Australia before deciding to pursue college football in the United States. His maturity, professionalism, and powerful leg immediately make him one of the oldest, and most experienced, freshmen in the country.

Building the Right Way

For Tierney, the class isn't defined by recruiting stars or flashy headlines.

It's defined by fit.

"We wanted football players," Tierney said. "Guys that love the game, love to compete, and want to represent Maine the right way. Some of these players will help us immediately. Others may need a year or two. But every one of them fits who we want to be."

As the Majestic Pines continue preparing for their inaugural 2026 campaign, this recruiting class represents another significant step toward building a sustainable winner in Portland.

One class at a time.

One foundation at a time.

One pine at a time.

Alright, we're doing this for real. This first season will be barebones. Probably just games and focusing on the incoming recruiting class before we go all in for 2025.
