Rebels Roll Nevada 48-14, Keep Fremont Cannon in Las Vegas
RENO, NV -- Rivalry week delivered everything UNLV fans could hope for — dominance, swagger, and the Fremont Cannon staying painted scarlet. The Rebels stormed into Mackay Stadium on Saturday and crushed Nevada 48-14, sealing another emphatic chapter in this bitter in-state feud.
UNLV wasted no time setting the tone. Quarterback Alex Orji led the charge with a 16-yard touchdown strike to Troy Omeire and later added rushing scores of 11 and 18 yards. By the end of the first quarter, the Rebels had built a commanding 21-0 lead thanks to Orji’s legs and Keyvone Lee’s 8-yard touchdown run.
Nevada tried to punch back in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 21-14 with a pair of touchdown passes from Brandon Vance — an 11-yard toss to Jordan Brown and a 40-yard strike to Herschel Turner. But just when the Wolf Pack thought they had momentum, Orji silenced the home crowd with his second rushing touchdown, this one from 18 yards out with just one second left before halftime.
From there, the Rebels slammed the door. Running back Jaylon Glover took over in the second half, pounding in three rushing touchdowns — from 4, 1, and 9 yards out — as UNLV leaned on its ground game to wear down Nevada’s defense.
The Rebel defense did its part too, forcing multiple turnovers and holding the Wolf Pack scoreless over the final 30 minutes.
When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard told the story: UNLV 48, Nevada 14. The cannon stays red.
“This rivalry means everything to our program, to our city, and to our alumni,” head coach Dan Mullen said after the game. “Our guys played with pride, and you saw that in every snap today.”
For the seniors, it was the perfect way to cap their final regular-season road trip: hoisting the Fremont Cannon in Reno, silencing the Wolf Pack faithful, and making sure the state of Nevada remains Rebel territory.
