Chapter VII: U Don't Have To Call

Dale got back to his dorm late, sweat still clinging to his hoodie from his night run. That grind was his religion—extra laps, solo drills, whatever it took to stay sharp. The aches in his legs were old friends at this point, reminders that he was stripping off yesterday’s armor and building new skin. Summer classes had eased the load, so he had more time to put in work. And he did, because that’s who Dale was—work, grind, repeat.

But that night, close to midnight, the grind couldn’t shield him. His phone lit up with a name he knew too well: Addy.

He picked up. Before he could even say “hello,” her voice sliced through the speaker like broken glass. “Are you fucking kidding me, Dale? You really going to out me like that???”

Dale froze, confused, trying to catch up. “Whoa, whoa, hold up! Bring it back—what are you even talking about?”

Her voice shot higher, ragged with fury. “Don’t play dumb with me, you stupid fuck! I found out you gave my panties to Trey over some childish ass argument! In public! You trying to ruin my life out here??”

Dale’s stomach dipped. That word—panties—hit him hard. So Trey really went and ran his mouth. He could already see the gossip spreading like wildfire across campus. He rubbed his forehead, exhaling slow.

“Let me guess… Trey ratted me out? Listen, Addy, I’m sorry it had to come to that, but I had to check his ass.”

Addy laughed, sharp and empty, no humor behind it. “Oh, so humiliating me was worth it? Worth putting me on blast just to prove you’re the alpha in some dumbass locker-room beef? I don’t give a fuck about your macho bullshit, Dale!” Her voice cracked, pain bleeding through the rage. “I trusted you. You were my friend here. And this is what you do? Betray me like that? For clout?”

Her voice broke again, slipping into sobs. “I can’t even walk around campus now without feeling like everybody knows, like they’re whispering behind my back. You have no idea how embarrassing this is. Everyone’s going to think I’m just some slut!”

Dale’s chest tightened. For a split second, guilt crept in, but he shook it off, jaw clenching. “Hey, listen… I’m sorry. I was wrong, I should’ve handled it different. That’s on me.” He paused. His pride wouldn’t let him sit in that apology too long. “But hold up—nah. Let’s keep it a buck. You fucked me and Trey. Why am I even apologizing?” His tone hardened, cutting like a blade. “I thought we was cool, low-key, vibin’. But you flipped when I had to dip that night to help a friend. I called, texted, blew your line up over the summer—you ghosted me. But now, your drawers get dragged into it and suddenly you got all the time in the world? Nah, fuck outta here with that.”

Addy was stunned silent for a moment, then her voice came back trembling, fury mixed with heartbreak. “What the hell are you talking about? I never fucked Trey! And how dare you throw that in my face? You knew I needed you that night and you bailed with no explanation. Of course I was hurt! But I never touched him. That’s sick, Dale.” Her sobs rose, words barely holding together. “You really think I’m that girl? That I’d creep with your teammate? After everything we shared?”

She broke down harder, her words dragging with sobs. “I can’t believe this is happening. You were supposed to be different. You were supposed to understand me. I thought you cared…” Her voice dropped to a whisper, soft, broken. “I guess I was wrong.”

Dale paced his dorm floor, arm propped as the phone pressed his ear. He remembered Trey bragging, cocky smirk and all. Trey had been relentless with the talk, too consistent. “Naaaah,” Dale muttered, almost to himself. “I’m not buying your tears. We was building something and you fucked around. That’s facts.”

His voice cut deeper, venom seeping out. “Let’s call it what it is. Trey always wanted you. Then I step in, start building something with you, and boom—he’s in your ear. Ain’t no way he holding onto that kind of lie with dedication. You folded. You fucked him. End of story.” He let out a cold laugh. “Matter fact—fuck it. You wanna run through the squad? Say less, I can set that up for you, hoe.”

The line went dead quiet. Addy’s breath hitched, her heart snapping clean in half. “You… you really think I’m just some whore?” she whispered, disbelief dripping from every syllable. “After everything we had? After everything I gave you?” Her voice cracked, hollow. “I thought you knew me better.”

Her sobs filled the line, shaking, painful. “I swear on everything I never touched him. I was mad, yes, but never that. You don’t get it—I care about you, Dale. More than anybody. Losing you? It terrifies me.” She took a ragged breath, voice desperate now. “Please. Please tell me you don’t believe that. That you trust me. At least a little.”

But Dale had already shut down. His pride wouldn’t let him bend. “Nah… you folding too hard. I called, texted, begged for your time, and you ghosted me. Then Trey pops up, all brand new, all smug? Nah. This shit adds up too clean. You ain’t innocent.” His voice dipped low, cruel. “Besides, this wasn’t even a relationship. Just a fling. You was a lousy bet anyway.”

That’s when he knew he killed it. The silence on the other end wasn’t silence—it was heartbreak cracking open.

Addy let out a bitter, empty laugh. “A fling? That’s all I was to you? Wow. Guess I was just a piece of ass when it was convenient, huh?” Tears streamed down her face as she shook her head. “I thought what we had was special. I thought that night at the Space Needle meant something. But I guess I was just fooling myself.”

Her voice went small, frail but final. “I can’t do this anymore. I can’t let you trample my heart like this. It’s too much. It’s best we just go our separate ways. Forget this ever happened.”

A pause, her last words breaking like glass underfoot. “Goodbye, Dale. Take care of yourself…”

The silence in Dale’s dorm was deafening. He stood there, phone heavy in his hand, the echoes of her pain replaying in his head. For all his bravado, something cracked inside him. That hollowness—he knew it too well. Same way it felt when Keisha played him dirty back home.

He dropped into his chair, elbows on his knees, staring at the floor. Addy’s words, her tears, her heartbreak—they lingered like smoke. He tried to shake it, but the truth pressed on him: maybe he just blew up something real. Maybe Trey had lied, maybe not. Either way, Dale had scorched the bridge beyond repair.

Now he was stuck between two enemies. Addy—Washington’s volleyball golden girl—and Trey, his teammate. Both could turn the wrong kind of spotlight on him if this mess spun ugly. And deep down, Dale knew… it was already spiraling.

That Heisman campaign just about over with. Dale may lowkey be in the wrong with Addy. Can't tell who's telling the truth but it sounds like Trey was just talking and Dale took the bait.
