"We got plenty of food," Jessica said, barely glancing at the containers that Vic had placed on the table as she bounced Yesenia on her hip. "Everyone and their family dropped some food off yesterday."
Vic leaned against the fridge in the kitchen, her comments stinging her more than she expected, "My mom wanted you to have it so…"
Jessica nodded with a sigh. "Fine. Just put it in the fridge."
The apartment looked different—new throw pillows on the couch, a decorative mirror that definitely wasn't there two weeks ago when he'd last visited. Vic moved to the kitchen, noting the shopping bags from Nordstrom and Sephora on the counter.
"How was Thanksgiving?" Jessica asked, her voice carrying that forced politeness she used when she was trying to speed along his visits.
"Good. I mean different with it being in Portland and the weather," Vic carefully arranged the containers in the refrigerator, making room between bottles of premade smoothies and takeout boxes. "Keshawn really did his thing this year, it was dope to have everyone out there."
"Must be nice," Jessica muttered.
Yesenia fussed in her arms, her tiny face scrunching up. Vic closed the refrigerator and turned toward them, arms instinctively reaching out.
"I got her," Jessica said, but this time she handed the baby over without argument.
Vic cradled his daughter against his chest, breathing in her baby-powder scent. Four months old now, and already she seemed different every time he saw her. Heavier, more alert, her eyes—his eyes—tracking his face.
"She's getting so big," he said softly.
Jessica nodded, leaning against the counter. "Yeah. Doctor says she's in the ninetieth percentile for height."
"She got them good Singleton genes that passed me over," Vic said, bouncing Yesenia gently. The words slipped out before he could think about them, but now that they hung in the air, he decided to follow through. "Been meaning to talk to you about that, actually."
Jessica's posture stiffened. "About what?"
"Her name," Vic kept his eyes on Yesenia, tracing her tiny features with his finger. "We said we’d revisit it after the hospital."
Jessica laughed, the sound sharp and dismissive. "Not much to revisit. She's an Aragon."
"She's my daughter too," Vic looked up, meeting Jessica's gaze.
"I know she’s your daughter but let’s not start," Jessica crossed her arms. "You’re not even here half the time but you want full time benefits? It don’t work like that, I’m sorry."
“We’re going to do this every time?" Vic took a breath, reminding himself that fighting wouldn't get him anywhere. "Look, I'm not trying to start something. I just think my daughter should have my name too."
"Well, I don't," Jessica said flatly.
"I'm serious about this, Jess," he tried to avoid getting into another argument, the usual flow of their conversation these days, "You’re acting like I’m some bum and giving her my last name is something I ain’t worth of."
"You think a last name makes you a father?" Jessica scoffed.
"No, but it's part of it," Vic shifted Yesenia to his shoulder, patting her back the way his mother had shown him. "We got to start somewhere and I feel like the way we’re trending, we’re creating a gap we ain’t going to be able to close down the road."
Jessica was quiet for a long moment, her eyes moving between Vic and their daughter. Finally, she sighed, shoulders dropping slightly. This wasn’t how she wanted things to go with her first child either.
"We could hyphenate, I guess," she said reluctantly. "If it's that important to you."
Vic nodded, a small victory but a significant one. "It is."
"Yesenia Aragon-Singleton," Jessica tested the name out loud. "That's a long ass name."
"It's a good name," Vic countered, forcing a smile.
…
Angela adjusted her backpack strap and took a deep breath. Better to get it over with.
"Ronnie," she called, quickening her pace to catch up with him.
He turned, surprise briefly crossing his face before settling into his usual easy smile. "My girl Ang with the plan. What’s shaking, my good sister?"
Angela rolled her eyes but couldn't stop the corner of her mouth from turning up. "Can we talk for a minute?"
"I don’t think no dude wants to ever hear that from a girl," he jokingly placed a hand on his heart.
"Stop playing," she glanced around at the students streaming past them on their way to morning classes. "I wanted to apologize for the other day. I was rude as hell."
Ronnie's eyebrows shot up. "You had a spiritual awakening or something? Who is this and where’s the Angela I know?"
"I'm serious," Angela sucked her teeth, "I was super short with you the other day and just because I’m going through some shit, don’t mean I should take it out on you. You’ve been a good friend, sort of."
Ronnie laughed, "Don’t worry about it, Ang. I didn’t take it too harshly, I know you always got something going on."
"Yeah, well, that’s my life," she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, the cold November air biting at her cheeks. "So we good?"
"We good," Ronnie nodded, then a mischievous grin spread across his face. "But you definitely owe me now."
Angela narrowed her eyes. "Owe you what exactly?"
"Lunch, at least. Maybe dinner. Possibly dessert," He counted off on his fingers. "My feelings were hurt. I might need multiple meals to recover."
"You are so damn dramatic," Angela laughed despite herself. "We can have lunch since I’m hungry anyway."
"I’ll take that," Ronnie conceded, falling into step beside her as they headed toward the student center.
…
Stacks watched as Trey shuffled in, orange jumpsuit hanging loose on his frame. The thought always ran through Stacks’ mind whenever he visited if he would have been able to do the time, how he would have held up.
"What's good, Blood?" Stacks leaned forward as Trey took the seat across from him, the metal chair scraping against the concrete floor.
Trey's eyes flicked over Stacks's face, giving nothing away. "Same shit."
Stacks glanced at the guard standing by the wall before lowering his voice. "You hear from the Southsiders yet?"
"I put the word out," Trey's expression remained flat, uninterested.
"We need that price cut, bro," Stacks reiterated, the plastic table between them sticky with years of handprints. "The Woods know they got us by the balls right now."
Trey glanced at the clock on the wall. "How's Charlene?"
The abrupt change in subject caught Stacks off guard. "She good. You know, she’s good."
"She don’t need nothing, right?" Trey’s question landed more like an accusation.
Stacks cleared his throat. "Nah, man. She’s good, like I said."
"It don’t get too crazy by them apartments anymore?"
"Nah, shit has slowed down for real," Stacks answered, "She’s good, Lil Malc good, everybody good. I stopped by your moms last week but she was out of town."
"Yeah," Trey nodded, "She went to my cousin’s for Thanksgiving."
"Listen," Stacks pushed forward, eager to return to business. "I’m going to start talking to some of our friends in Long Beach, see if there is something there. They got a direct line to the Colombians so if we can get the price down, we can really start pushing shit. Both out here and in here. Without that, after some of the niggas we lost last year, we ain’t going to b—"
"I don't give a fuck about all that," Trey cut him off. "This ain’t a fucking board meeting. Just tell me what you need done in here."
"Somebody gotta give a fuck about our future."
"The future?" Trey laughed, the sound hollow and cold. "Nigga, my future in here with all these niggas. Who I run with, who I don’t run with, none of that shit matter, nigga. You need a nigga taken care of? Let me know. Why we doing it or who the fuck we doing it to don’t really matter, nigga. I’m still in here, ain’t I?"
…
"Are we just going to ignore the elephant in the room?"
Angela set her fork down, leaning back in her chair. "You sure you want to hear all that?"
"I asked, didn't I?" Ronnie took a bite of his sandwich, waiting.
"I don’t know," Angela sighed. "Holidays are always hard, you know? Me and my home didn’t have the best relationship but shit, at least it was something, you know? We could fake it for a day or two a year, forget we hated each other."
Ronnie's expression softened. "Yeah, that’s super tough. You went back home?"
"Nah. Stayed here. Didn't really have anywhere to go," she replied.
"You could've told me. My family would've loved having you."
Angela managed a small smile. "Thanks. But I was okay. Had some work to catch up on anyway."
"Always with the work," Ronnie shook his head. "That's part of your problem, you know."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means you're always grinding. School, that internship, the center, your little activism clubs—"
"They're not 'little,'" she cut in.
"My point is," Ronnie continued, "When's the last time you just had fun? Like, actual fun, not 'I organized a successful group outing' fun."
Angela rolled her eyes. "I don’t know if throwing up in an alley at two in the morning is my version of fun."
"Don’t knock it till you try it, Ang. I mean, college is supposed to be fun, you know? You’ll have the rest of your life to be an adult and working and shit. You can only get blackout drunk with no judgement for these four years. After that? They call that a drinking problem."
She picked up her fork again, pushing the remaining lettuce around. "Easy for you to say. You're not trying to juggle a full course load, an internship, and..." She trailed off, not wanting to say Vic's name.
"And?" Ronnie pressed.
"Trying to move on from a relationship you thought was going to be forever," she finally said, the words rushing out.
"Y’all were 'the couple’ for sure," Ronnie nodded slowly, "Y’all don’t really talk anymore?"
"He texted me on Thanksgiving."
"Did you respond?"
"Hell no," Angela scoffed, though she'd stared at that message for a solid hour before deleting it. "What's the point? He's got a whole family now."
Ronnie scoffed, "Yeah, I saw. I mean, you’ve got to move on too, right?"
"Way fucking easier said than done," Angela snapped, then immediately regretted it. "Sorry. It's just... complicated."
"Life is complicated. That's why you gotta enjoy the simple stuff when you can." Ronnie wiped his hands on a napkin. "Look, I'm not saying you shouldn't be upset or that you shouldn't work hard. I'm just saying college is supposed to be about more than just studying and activism."
"What, like parties and hookups?" Angela rolled her eyes.
"Like community," Ronnie corrected. "Like finding your people and having experiences you'll remember when you're old and gray. The books will always be there, Ang. The protests will always be there. But these years? This time? It goes by quick. Shit, it felt like just the other day we were at Hamilton."
"Is that what you’re calling sleeping with half of your dorm pod? Community?"
"I’m a faithful man, these days, Ang. You know this!" Ronnie laughed.
"I don’t know shit," Angela tried to suppress her smile, "How long has it been?"
"We’re creeping up on six months," Ronnie replied, "Is that like gift worthy?"
"Any girl that lasts a week with your ass is gift worthy," Angela teased, "Thankfully she doesn’t go here."
"You really talking like I was community dick or something."
"You weren’t?"
"No," Ronnie shook his head, "You never tasted these goods, did you? So clearly I wasn’t.”
"Boy, bye," Angela rolled her eyes, although the thought had crossed her mind a time or three.
She often wondered how things would have played out if she had let go of Vic when she came to Howard. If she had pursued this thing — whatever it was — that existed between her and Ronnie, dating back to their senior year of high school? Maybe Vic would have never met Jessica that way. Maybe he would have met someone else. Maybe they’d just have casually dated. Maybe he wouldn’t have a child, a permanent road block between their reuniting.
"We should hang out sometime," Ronnie suggested, "Make it a double date?"
"With who?" Angela raised an eyebrow, "I don’t want any of your dusty ass friends."
"I got a homeboy that’s from Nigeria," Ronnie shrugged, "Six-three, dark skin brother that’s a hopeless romantic."
"Why you sound like a slave auction?"
"I’m just saying," Ronnie laughed, "He can show you a good time."
Maybe he was right. Maybe she did need to remember how to have fun. Maybe she needed to stop wondering what could have been and start figuring out what could be.
