BOISE STATE 2032 MEDIA GUIDE

THE SCHEDULE

Boise State will look to defend it's Pre-Season #8 ranking with a pretty tough schedule as they face 3 Top-25 ranked teams in non-conference play. The Broncos open up their season in Week 1 hosting #22 Auburn. The Broncos beat Auburn on the road last season at Jordan Hare and will now look to extend their 30 game home winning streak against the Tigers on "The Blue"

Boise State was originally scheduled to host Memphis in Week 3 but after putting up 112 points last year against the Tigers, Memphis backed out of the game opening the door for #25 Wisconsin to make a trip to Boise, with BSU making a future trip to Camp Randall in return.

Boise State's biggest game of the year will be in Week 4 as the Broncos travel to Clemson Memorial Stadium to take on the defending National Champs. in a matchup of what might have been had the Broncos pulled off comeback against the Hurricanes.

Boise State will then start Pac-12 play in Week 5 as they host #19 UCLA. BSU will then travel to Cal in Week 7 and then host Arizona State in Week 7 before taking their 2nd "Bye" Week.

The Broncos close out their Pac-12 schedule with the North Division

Week 9 vs Colorado
Week 10 @ #15 Oregon
Week 11 @ Washington State
Week 12 @ Utah
Week 13 vs Oregon State
Week 14 vs Washington **Senior Night**

THE ROSTER
(Overall) RS=Already Redshirted, (R)=Redshirting (T)=True Freshman

QB RS SR Tua Draft (92)
QB RS SO Cam Hooks (91)
QB RS SO Rashard Rattay (77)

Draft returns for his 3rd season under center. Draft already has 12,799 yds with 116 TD and 24 INT in his first 2 years in the Broncos high power offense. He is well above the pace to pass Washignton State’s Luke Faulk as the Pac-12 all-time leader in passing yards (14481) and touchdowns (119). He also should pass Kellen Moore’s Boise State record of (14,667 yds) and 142 touchdowns.

Cam Hooks redshirted at San Diego State, but the former 4* is ready to step into the #2 role this season and should be the heir to the throne after Draft departs.

Rashard Rattay won the #3 job as former #3 Tyrone Waddle moves to WR.

RB SO Brian Crum (92)
RB RS SO Jason Whitted (89)
RB RS JR Jermarcus Boykins (87)
RB RS JR Randall Amerson (87)
RB RS SO Leati Faalele (82)
RB R FR Dom Waller (78)

Crum played in just 11 games last year but still managed to finish with a team high 238 carries for 1269 yds and 20 TD’s. The former 5* is ready to see what he can do with a full season under his belt.

Whitted appeared in just 5 games last season rushing 71 times for 294 yds (4.1 avg) well scoring 6 TD’s. He is back fully healthy and ready to roll in Week 1.

Boykins appeared in all 16 games last season rushing for a career high 819 yards on 169 carries well scoring 11 TD’s on the ground Boykins was also huge in the receiving game and is the returning leader with 65 receptions last year for 597 yards and 9 TD’s. Boykins also 323 kickoff return yards giving him a combined total of 1739 All-purpose yards and 20 TD’s.

Amerson appeared in 10 games and carried the ball 52 times for 212 yards well scoring 1 TD.

5* Dom Waller, unlike his best friend Brian Crum, will redshirt this season and look to carve out a role in the offense next season.

FB RS JR Tyler Fry (78)
FB RS JR Tobias Teague (76)
FB RS FR TJ Lanier (72)

Fry transitioned from RB to FB last season and earned the starting role helping lead Crum/Whitted/Boykins to over 2000 yards. But Fry showed he is more than just a blocker still recording 30 carries for 118 yds (3.9 avg) well scoring 10 touchdowns as the Broncos’ main goal line back.

Teague/Lanier are converted TE’s who provide additional depth at both FB/TE.

WR RS JR Conner Friesz (97)
WR RS SR Marquez Stockston (90)
WR RS JR Kyle Harmon (82)
WR RS SO Tyrone Waddle (82)
WR T FR Eric Zentner (80)
WR RS FR Frank Ogbonna (78)
WR R FR Caleb Bromell (76)
WR R FR Taj Carr (76)
WR R FR Angel Coker (75)

Despite losing their Top-5 WR’s from last season the Bronco WR room is still loaded with talent, it's just unproven talent. Former 4* Recruit Conner Friesz had 5 rec for 73 yds and 2 TD last year. He wil be the team’ #1.

Marquez Stocken had 31 rec for 439 yds and 5 TD for the UCLA Bruins in 2028 but was buried on the depth chart and didn’t record a reception the past 2 seasons. Now he is in Boise ready to follow in the footsteps of Tyler Crook who had a breakout year as the Broncos #2 WR last year.

True Freshman and 5* Recruit Eric Zentner beat out Harmon and Waddle for the #3 WR role and should see plenty of action in the slot a role that helped former 4* Kelian Bettis post some of the Best stats in NCAA history.. Can Zentner be the next Bettis?

Harmon and Waddle will rotate as the #4/#5.. Harmon a former 4* Recruit has yet to record a catch in his first 2 seasons at BSU well Waddle is a converted QB who passed for 95 yds and 2 TD’s last season as the team’s #3 QB. Waddle will also be the Broncos primary Gadget guy who could still see action under center or as a runner.

Ogboona provides additional depth well the Trio of 4* Recruits (Bromell/Carr/Coker) will all redshirt and look to replace Stockton and push Harmon/Waddle for PT next season,

TE RS SR Roy Carney (86)
TE SO Larry Ika (82)
TE RS FR Max Davis (78)
TE R FR Sam Fowler (74)

Carney takes over as TE1 for Josh Flagerty who produced over 1000 yds last season on his way to becoming a 1st Round pick. Carney had 17 rec or 211 yds and 1 TD last year as the team’s #2. Ika moves into the #2 role and should see an increase in his PT. Last year he had 4 rec for 59 yds and 1 TD. Davis is another former 4* who moves up the depth chart well 4* Recruit Sam Fowler redshirts.

O-LINE

LT RS SR Vince Westbrook (88)
LG RS JR Nick East (94)
C RS SO Moses Eagles (82)
RG RS Quinn Winston (86)
RT RS Johnathan Daniels (88)

LT RS SO Marvin Bulaga (87)
LG RS SR Brock Devoe (85)
C RS FR Reggie Uzomah (81)
RG RS SO Kevin Goodley (83)
RT RS FR David Battles (81)
T/G/C-RS SO Deshawn Moffett (83)

LT/RT R FR Max Brink (77)
LG/RG R FR Eric Cole (76)
LG/RG R FR Brenton Pride (77)
C R FR Juwann Fries (76)

The O-Line depth is solid as BSU will redshirt 4 incoming 4* Recruits. Westbrook and Daniels return as starters at Tackle well the Interior spots (Guard/Center) all get new starters..

Nick East started his career at Oregon and played 14 games for the Ducks before transferring to UCLA where he played in 13 games last year for the Bruins. He appears to be a future NFL pick

Quinn Winston was actually recruited at tackle but moves to RG where he will become the fulltime starter. He has appeared in 20 games over the past 2 years as a backup.

D-LINE
DE RS JR Tyler Rossi (85)
DE RS SR Ed Labron (85)
DE RS SR Jimmy Komar (81)
DE RS JR Rashawn Dimke (74)
DE R FR Malachi Trewyn (74)
DE R FR Romeo Miranda (67)

DT RS JR Callum Johnson (87)
DT RS SR Manu Angel (80)
DT RS SO George Bradford (74)
DT T FR Trevor Bouchard (77)
DT T FR Damien Kern (77)

Rossi a Colorado transfer recorded 41 Tackles with 9 TFL and 2.5 sacks last year for the Buff’s. Laborn is a former 3* recruit who appeared in all 16 games last year but recorded just 4 tackles 1 TFL. Komar is a former Utah Ute transfer who appeared in 2 games last year but didn’t record a stat.

Johnson has rotated in as a starter at DT the past 2 years. He missed part of last season appearing in only 9 games. For his career in 25 games he has 77 Tackles with 22 TFL and 5.5 sacks.

Angel has been a 3 year reserve appearing in 42 games recording 35 tackles with 10 TFL and 5 sacks.

Bouchard/Kern/Trewyn are all 4* Recruits who will redshirt and look to push for starting roles next season.

LINEBACKERS
RS JR Elias Incognito (93)
RS SR Lorenzo Tiffin (90)
RS SO Akeem Nailor (84)
RS JR Reshard Braham (80)
RS JR Paul Higdon (88)
RS JR Robert Capps (84)

R FR Joshn Dixon (67)
R FR Cortez McKinney (68)
R FR Gage Byrne (70)

Incognito almost joined the Portal after recording 111 Tackles with 12 TFL, 2 Sacks and 2 INT last year. In 2029 he lead the Broncos with 15 TFL and 11.5 Sacks.. Instead he is back and ready to take over as the Broncos SAM LB.

Tiffin will be the Broncos Mike LB.. He played in just 8 games last year after appearing in all 16 game the previous 2 seasons.

BSU plays a primary 4-2-5 Defense leaving Nailor/Braham/Higdon/Capps as backups who will see action when the team moves to a 3-3-5 or sometimes a 4-3 or 3-4

Dixon/McKinney/Byrne are all 3* Recruits who will redshirt and hopefully stick around unless they leave because of play style (pretty much a common thing with BSU LB’s when you play a 4-2-5)

SECONDARY
CB RS SR Kyrie Darnold (84)
CB T FR Roland Finley (78)
CB RS SO Tremaine Simms (79)
CB RS SO Mike Dishman (74)
CB RS FR Marquise Darnold (74)
CB R FR Barry Stack (77)

Darnold moves from the #2 to the #1 CB role. He had 90 Tackles with 4 TFL and 2 INT last year. Finley the 5* Recruit and highest rated recruit to join the Broncos will start Day 1 as the Broncos #2 and should be next year’s #1.

Simms had a huge spring (Training) and looks like a solid #3 allowing 5* Recruit Barry Stack a chance to redshirt and push him for the #2 role next season.

Dishman and M. Darnold provide nice depth

FS RS SR Tremaine Crick (83)
FS RS SR Evan Cookus (79)
FS R FR Conner Cantrell (70)

Crick played in all 16 games last year as a reserve recording 29 Tackles, Cookus also appeared in all 16 games and posted 59 Tackles with 4 TFL and 1 INT as the teams Nickle DB

SS RS SR Deontae Clayborn (84)
SS RS JR Nate Kohua (78)
SS R FR Enrique Bartee (67)

Clayborn played in all 16 games and posted 69 Tackles with 4 TFL. In 2029 he had 33 tackles with 1 INT as a reserve.

SPECIAL TEAMS
PK RS SO Cedric Eagles (80)
P RS SR Mitch Lauderdale (83)
P R FR Rickie Walters (80)

Eagles takes over for 4 year starter E. Gutierrrez.. Lauderdale returns for his final season after averaging over 40 yds per punt last year with a career high 50 Punts. Walters will redshirt and look to replace Lauderdale next season.

Yeah overall I am pretty happy with it.. I was really hoping to land a couple other WR's from the Portal. Originally it said Stockton signed with Illinois so I thought I had struck out on all 4 guy's I went after. But when I loaded my roster for next season, he was on the roster and I was very happy. Some of the guy's I wanted could've put up some monster #'s in my offense but I think Friesz and Zentner both have some big time abilities and I was pretty happy to see Harmon get a pretty decent boost in training and Waddle rated out as a solid WR after moving him from QB.

I think we have the talent to make another run.. My D-Line depth and sack pressure is probably my biggest weakness.. Also last year I only had 10 INT's as a team after recording 18 and 22 the previous 2 years, but that probably also factors in because my pass rush is so weak. But my run defense is solid.

STREAK IS OVER AS BRONCOS FALL IN WEEK 1

GAME RECAP

Boise State opened the game with a nice 8 play drive ending with a 15 yd TD pass from Tua Draft to his new #1 WR Conner Friesz to open up the game up but Auburn answers right back as the Tigers showed up ready to play. with JR QB Deontary Clinton (84 ovr) throwing the first of 3 touchdowns on the day.

Bronco fans got their first look at PK Cedric Eagles powerful leg on the closing drive of the 1st Quarter as Miller sends out his new kicker to attempt his first FG in his career.. The Redshirt Sophomore nails it from 55 yds out to give the Broncos the lead (10-7).

But 2 Draft INT's including a 28 yd "Pick 6" by MLB Jamar Layne (89 ovr) gives Auburn the (21-10) lead as Bronco fans started to wonder what just happened. BSU would try to settle things down with the run game as Crum and Whitted combined for 8 carries and 60 yds on the following series including a 8 yd touchdown run by Whitted to cut the lead to (21-17) but Auburn answers back with a rushing touchdown of Tigers backup RB SR Dre Redfield breaks free on a 56 yd run to set up a Auburn FG as time expires making it (31-20) at the half.

A quick 3 and out gave BSU a a chance to cut the lead to (31-28) early in the 3rd Quarter but Auburn responds with a pair of scores to extend the lead back to (45-28) going into the 4th Quarter..

With 4 minutes to play in the game Boise State would get a huge play for a score as Draft and True Freshman Eric Zentner hook up for a 80 yd touchdown to cut the lead to (45-35) but BSU would turn the ball over twice on downs in their comeback attempt

FINAL SCORE AUBURN-45 BOISE STATE-35

IMPACT FROM THE LOSS

Boise State drops from #8 to #20 with the loss.. The Broncos will have a "Bye" in Week 2 as they prepare to host Wisconsin..

COACH MILLER AFTER THE GAME
This was a team loss.. We lost a couple guy's on the 0-Line early (Westbrook-game,, Winston-5 weeks) and struggled to give Tua time to throw leading to 5 sacks. We turned the ball over 4 times (2 INT's, and 2 on Downs) and can't expect our secondary who has 4 new starters to be able to hold a Offense like Auburn in check all game especially when the D-Line struggled to put pressure on their QB. Clinton is a solid QB but he shouldn't complete 75% of his pass's and throw for 400 yds against this Defense.. I felt like our run game was solid but when your trailing by 2 scores sometimes you forget to trust you will have enough time to make a comeback without big passing plays. That's on my and Marcus and our play calling

Yeah.. It's been a hot minute since I have had back to back bad games.. But it was a struggle. 4/13 on 3rd downs, 2/4 on 4th downs and 2 INT's killed me plus the fact I couldn't stop their offense when I need to play catch up.. I have never lost more then 1 regular season game since I started this dynasty... Year 1 I went 12-1 winning the MWC then beat Oregon in Round 1 before losing in the Quarter Finals. Year 2 I went 11-1, won my 1st round game and lost in the Quarter finals. Year 3 I went 12-1 winning the Pac-12 but lost in the quarter finals then I went 16-0 then 15-1 in my 2 Natty years then 14-2 last year. So I am treading new territory here.

BRONCOS NEED 2ND HALF COMEBACK FOR WIN #1

GAME RECAP

After losing to Auburn in Week 1, the Broncos came out flat in the 1st Quarter against the Badgers despite having a week to prepare.. Wisconsin took a early (21-7) with a pair of touchdown runs as Wisconsin looked to play smash mouth football.

Wisconsin added to their lead with a 22 yd FG midway through the 2nd Quarter to make it (24-7) but Boise State battle back scoring on a 13 yd touchdown from Draft to Marquez Stockton to make it (24-14) and then with under a minute to play BSU would tack on a 28 yd FG to make it (24-17) going into the half.

Boise State opened up the 2nd half with the ball and Draft would lead a 8 play drive ending with a 15 yd TD pass to True Freshman Eric Zentner for his 2nd score of the game to tie the game (24-24) but Wisconsin answers back as they continue to just run through and over the Bronco Defense with a 22 yd touchdown run by by JR QB George Nnabuife (82 ovr) as Wisconsin takes the lead again (31-24) with 3:36 to play in the 3rd Quarter.

Looking up at the scoreboard and finding themselves trailing yet again something clicked with the Broncos. Draft would tie the game with another scoring strike to Stockton (5 yds) making it (31-31) then after forcing their first turnover of the season (fumble) BSU would take the lead on another Draft touchdown as the SR QB finds Conner Friesz on a 10 yd score to make it (38-31) with 14 seconds to play.

Boise State would then force a punt to open up the 4th Quarter and add to their lead as Cedric Eagles connects from 33 yd out to make it (41-31). Wisconsin would answer back as Nnabuife finds Maxwell Lopienski on a 74 yd bomb to cut the lead to (41-38) with 6:28 to play but both that's as close as they would get as Boise State seals the victory with another Draft touchdown late in the 4th as #2 Kyle Harmon scores his first career touchdown with a 2 yd catch..

Wisconsin finished the day with 165 yds and 3 touchdowns on th ground led by SR RB Harvery Rincon (85 ovr) who had 29 carries for 143 yds and 1 TD well JR QB G. Nnabuife finished 15/32 (45%) for 311 yds with 2 TD passing and 2 rushing TD's..
FINAL SCORE BOISE STATE-48 WISCONSIN-38
KEY BRONCOS
QB T. Draft-25/54 (46%) 333 yds 6 TD
RB B. Crum-33 carries 167 yds
RB J. Boykins-7 carries 41 yds, 4 rec 42 yds
WR M. Stockton-8 rec 77 yds 2 TD
WR E. Zentner-7 rec 114 yds 2 TD
WR C. Friesz-2 rec 29 yds 1 TD

TE R. Carney-3 rec 69 yds

IMPACT FROM THE GAME

Despite the win, Boise State actually drops in the rankings as they go from #20 to #22 going into the Week 4 matchup with Clemson. The Tigers after their Week 1 loss to Louisville defeated FCS West (76-13) before having a Week 3 "Bye" to help prepare for their matchup with the Broncos

INJURY UPDATE
For 2nd straight game, BSU struggled to keep the O-Line healthy as several starters missed time throughout the game but at the end the only long term injury from the game was JR WR Conner Friesz who will miss the next 3 weeks with a Torn Labrum. With Friesz out Miller will rotate Kyle Harmon and former backup QB Tyronne Waddle more into the mix with Stockton and Zentner. in the passing game.
