Steelers Hold On Despite Patriots Comeback Attempt In Sloppy Contest

After an Anthony Richardson fumble, Drake May and the Patriots were this close to tossing the potential tying touchdown. But JR5 knocked away the 4th down attempt and Pitt ran out the clock with a final touchdown drive to ice the MNF win.

Foxboro, MA. - For the second straight week, the Pittsburgh Steelers battled through a torrential downpour — and this time, it nearly cost them their perfect record. Between the rain and self-inflicted wounds, Pittsburgh committed 12 offensive penalties, three turnovers, and even surrendered a safety on a holding call in the end zone.

Despite the chaos, Anthony Richardson once again found a way to lead his team to victory. The Steelers rallied to build a 28–9 lead behind a pair of late-half touchdowns and a 16-yard scramble from Richardson following a Drake Maye interception.

But the slippery conditions continued to haunt the star quarterback. After throwing a pick-six on his first pass of the game, Richardson was intercepted again by Craig Woodson while trying to seal the win. The Patriots capitalized with a field goal, then trimmed the deficit to 28–20 early in the fourth quarter following a long touchdown drive.

New England appeared poised to complete the comeback after recovering a Richardson fumble deep in Pittsburgh territory, but the Steelers defense held firm. On 4th-and-6 from the red zone, veteran Jalen Ramsey broke up a pass intended for Stefon Diggs to preserve the lead. From there, big runs by Keaton Mitchell (46 yards) and Richardson (15 yards) set up a one-yard touchdown plunge to ice a 35–20 Steelers victory — their eighth straight of the 2026 season.

“We ain’t trying to win style points,” Richardson joked after the game. “But real talk. I have to do better as a leader in those situations. Can’t fool around and let them back into a game they shouldn’t be in.”

Head coach Mike Tomlin echoed the sentiment, praising his young quarterback’s growth:

“It’s a learning process, and one he’s embracing head-on. When you play on bad teams, sometimes those small details get lost on you. He’s maturing — as a man and as a leader.”

The 8–0 Steelers join the Philadelphia Eagles as the lone unbeaten teams heading into Week 9, where the Steelers prepare for a divisional matchup with the Cleveland Browns (5-3).
